PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

In order:
Zoe, because I'm loyal, loving, feminine, and fond of weapons and funny men. River, because I'm a little whimsical in the brainpan, feel too much, and have an actually good relationship with my brother. Kaylee, because I get sensitive, mask hurt with anger, and have a great smile and open friendliness. Inara, as certain people view Inara, because I hold dear the idea of sacred sexuality. However, I consider myself more Nandi, because I'm honest about what I want and how I feel, and I'm rebellious enough to go after it and smash a few dulcimers. Simon, because I'm devoted to those important to me. Mal, because I don't want to be under nobody's thumb.
Don't really relate to Book or Jayne. Tired to come up with something, but to no avail.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

I'm Zoe without a doubt with a little bit of Mal mixed in

I'm feminine yet strong. When people want something taken care of they come to me. I also am very caring although i don't like to show it openly.

Also I'm tore up plenty but I'll always fly true

First off, great thread! I've read about a third of the responses so far, and will be processing the rest in due time.

Secondly, I know I've only been here a few days, but are you guys all used to my long, rambling posts? Yes? Good!

Every character possesses some element that I can relate to, whether it is Zoe's unwavering loyalty or Inara's need for private retreat. That is the great thing about having so many characters; you can have each one basically represent an archetype, but at the same time play with all these idiosyncracies (like Jayne turning out to be a bit of a mama's boy) that make them so rich and human, we can't help but see ourselves in them. Indeed, this board could benefit from an in-depth analysis of each character (if there isn't one somewhere already), and as soon as I have time I will be all over that project like a Reaver on a... O.K., it doesn't matter how I try to finish that, it's going to be wildly inappropriate, but you get my point. Nevertheless, I relate to some characters more than others, so away we go...

(Obviously none of these parallels are going to be as extreme and exciting in my case, but that is what makes the crew dramatic TV characters and me a resident of tired mundania.)

First, I do relate to Simon. I am an educated individual, and right now could be rapidly climbing the ladder to success in an engineering design or analytical group. Unfortunately, some things didn't go exactly as planned my senior year at college. I got my degree, but suffice it to say that I wasn't in a good bargaining position when I went to get a job. I had to take what I could get, which was a manufacturing support engineer. I have infinite respect for people who make their living with their hands. It is a family tradition, and I often envy their strength and stamina. Nevertheless, as the college boy, I don't really fit in there, and there are numerous guys in the factory who don't miss an opportunity to remind me that I don't. Also, there are a few who will flat-out lie to your face if it can in some way make their job easier, and I've had people steal things from my desk, so I sometimes feel like I've fallen in with cutthroats.

Next, I get River, as I have been called 'gifted.' Had I chosen to develop any one thing I was good at, I think I could have been River-like in that one, single thing. Instead I've become more of a generalist. In that, though, I often feel fragmented, like the "real" me is lost somewhere. I also had to go through a lot of governemnt tests when I was young to determine if I should skip a grade of school, and during that period had to get used to a bunch of people who weren't me standing around debating my future. Perhaps most importantly, I've gone through periods where I felt like I was losing my grip, like my life was spiraling out of my control, and during which I struggled with whether my continued existence was really of any benefit to anyone. And during those times all I really wanted was to be a regular kid.

I see a lot of myself in Mal, also. Though he has lost his faith, in other ways we are very similar. I am aggresively independent, and I respond with strong opposition to anybody trying to tell me how to live my life. I am often called on to lead, whether I like it or not, and when I am given those responsibilities, I expect my plans to be followed. If my friends and I were ever drawn into some kind of Firefly-esque danger, I know they'd all look to me to get them out of it somehow. I don't always think I'm the best leader, but if everybody else is just standing around with their 'plows' in their hands not knowing what to do, then I'll set a course and expect others to help me or get out of my way. Sometimes I deal harshly with the people I love if I feel it's needed (right or wrong), but I know they are the ones who keep me in the air and I try to show them that gratitude. I am not easy to get to know or to live with, but I am fiercely protective of the ones I love, and I respond to disloyalty with unashamed contempt and aggression. I've also been lost in the woods, feeling all hollowed out and without hope, like everything I've fought for has been lost and there's nothing left for me. During those times, the thing that has kept me going is mostly the determination to keep flying. No matter what.

There's one other character I do identify with, one I'm surprised I haven't seen more folk mention: Serenity. Like her, I've been beat up a bit, knocked down, broken down and put back together. Sometimes I feel like I'm held up by chewing gum and bailing wire. I've had people in my life who didn't treat me right (as I'm sure she did), and I've bucked those folk off and left 'em in the dust as best I could, waiting for a crew that would keep me in the air. People who really get to know me and learn my secrets can find protection and a home, so to speak. I try to be a 'safe place' for my crew, not only when they are hurt and in trouble, but when they have joyous moments to share, too. As long as their love keeps me flying, I'll never leave them stranded. Oh, yeah, and I've also been known from time to time to get stuck with a load of bullshit.

Digging holes, for posts.

Very enjoyable thread

I relate a lot to River. I'm the-Fay-hwa-speaking-wacko-in-his -late-teens-with-a-certain-oddness-to-him type. I am intuitive, yet thoroughly analytical in the way I perceive things, I'm volatile, and I don't connect with people awfully well. Yep, I'm all River... Well, I guess I'm saner, thanks to my brain being still whole, but I'm straying away from my point. River is probably the reason I got so deeply touched by the show. Not so much because I can relate to her somewhat, but because she's a such a beautiful character. Wonderfuly acted to, all the kudos in the verse to Summer Glau.

I have to be unoriginal and relate to Simon (and a little bit to River). Even before watching Firefly I was told that I and my little sister had a very special relationship, and though I love all my brothers and sisters dearly, still, she and I are the closest, nigh inseparable. We're both gifted, and she says very odd things sometimes, and though I'm fourteen years older we still play together like the flashback at the beginning of "Safe". So when I watched Firefly, I completely felt for Simon, even if he was a jerk sometimes...because I truly believe that I'd do what he did for my family. I also have to admit that it took years and years to "fit in" at all, as I was the bookish shy girl who had no clue about popular culture at all, and was likely to stick her foot in her mouth if she opened it , so I have to defend Simon there a bit. If you aren't shy, you can't understand what it's like, and how easily your struggles with communication get taken for arrogance or aloofness. But I also have a weird way of viewing the world, mostly kept hidden, and I often have a difficult time being understood because of that fact, so I can sympathize with River.

I'd say Book.
Not by the whole Preacher schpiel, as I have no concurent faith other then believing in God in general... But the seriousnes (mostly, mind), and the loyalty and downright Belief in something (When I believe in someat, I believe HARD)... yeah, that works. Oh, and Simon.
Cuz Simon is just that awesome.

Zoe... Because she speaks her mind (e.g. about Mal's questionable decisions) and has no time for Saffron's icky women-exist-to-serve-men act. She also has a nice dry sense of humour.

Inara... Because she's another strong female character, but also because she has inner conflict which she tries to work out on her own without burdening anyone else. Plus she doesn't take any crap from Mal.

And Mal... For the side of him that has done the whole patriotism, religion, fighting for a just cause etc bit and is now deeply cynical about life - but he's nevertheless held onto his strong sense of loyalty to a select group of people. He seems to need something in his universe to believe in, despite his outer show of "I'm all business." Interesting to speculate what would happen if something ever happened to shatter that faith in/loyalty to those he trusts... I suspect he'd become a pretty dangerous individual if he ever lost that final connection to humanity.

YETANOTHERBROWNCOAT

I just read through the entire thread during my lunch, and i love how this one show can bring so many different people into one community.

Anyway, I relate mostly to Jayne, because to so many people I come across as not having been overburdened with an abundance of schooling, or as insensitive towards others, but if you are around me enough my intelligence might just suprise you, and i can in fact be very emotional. Not to mention i like a good rousing fight and all kinds of weapons, which is probably part of the reason I joined the Marine Corps. Also like Jayne, I am saving as muuch as I can to help my mom.

Mixed in with that is some of the Captain, Zoe, and the Doc. Like Mal I don't like complications, but they do seem to crop up, and I am rather independent minded. Like Zoe, I am extremely loyal to my friends and family. Unfortunately, I seem to have Simon's lack of skill with the ladies, oh well, you can't win em all.

RIVERFLAN

I'm River. I'm really smart, I don't relate well to people, and I'm sorta crazy, and I even got a cut to the brain! (it was a car accident when I was a toddler, I was crossing the sidewalk in front of a driveway, and the car backed out.) Also, I've been known to spout weird bits of info, like River does in Safe, with "The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds, given adequate vaccuuming systems". I havn't had any trouble with the government, but then I wouldn't have gone to that school.

River: "The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds, given adequate vaccuuming systems."

Pretty much Mal...I tend to take charge ( and usually I'd prefer to be in charge since everyone else will likely screw it up if I leave them to it) and though I might be tired and frustrated, I do the job ( I teach emotionally disturbed and behavior disordered students in junior high if this helps explain) also, I'm fine with killing someone as longs as it's done right:)

Though I'm fondest of Jayne ..who is, I must say exactly like most of my students.

folks around me would probably say i was a mix of Mal and Inara - a take charge type with nurturing qualities. always making sure that everyone around me is being taken care of...

but i relate to all the characters very strongly in different ways. i guess that's one of the reasons this show is so unbelieveably amazing. these are real human beings with quirks and flaws and beauty.

Well this is easy enough

Mal

Simple really have a dislike of all the bueacracy. Always do the opposite of what i should when backed into a corner or given ultimatums. Fiercly protective of family and friends (AKA my crew). Don't mind operating within my own code. Also have a love hate relationship in the past (Inara type romanance). Would consider myself a realist. Love speaking in an informal manner.

Although not so much on the gun fighting and ship running front.

Also a little bit of Jayne in there because i have been known to say some horrific things and i can be a little mercenary at times.

Definately Jayne, mainly because of my love for guns and my "shoot first ask questions later" attitude. Also I can be a bit mercenary If the price is right of course! But I do have more schoolin than he does, so I'm a smart merc Oh and did I mention my love of guns, I've named all of mine as well!!

I'd like to say Mal, because he has his own sense of honor and decency... but everyone else seems to think I'm Wash, and that's okay, too.

Side note: I wannabe Spike, also, but I'm afraid I come a LOT closer to being Xander, or possibly Giles...

Hm....that is the question, isn't it?

Well, Zoe's a military girl, similarity there ;); but I can definitely relate to the relationship Simon has with River, cuz me and my brother are close like that, and I can definitely identify with Mal's sense of honor and odd sense of nobility.
But, if there was really someone on the show I could relate to, it would definitely be Kaylee. I'm really good at what I do and I know my stuff, but to people who don't know me, hell, even people who know me, I might seem a little goofy or 'flaky' on the surface. And I'm interested in people :) "They've all got stories!"

I'd have to go with... Mal or Book, personality wise... meaning I deal with crazy messed up stuff no kid (and yes, for this kinda thing I'll still gladly call myself a kid at 19 years old) has a right too, also, I have Mals odd nobility in me, and problems ALWAYS seem to crop up in even the most simple of plans... and I sometimes find my path... cloudy... and am not very proud of some of the things I've done... Simon intellegence wise (I'm no River, but I'm no slouch when it comes to book smarts) and Jayne for overall ability to cause pain if it is needed... Also, should probably throw a bit of River in there for the "very best in violence," that we see in the BDM (not saying I could stand against Reavers or anything, but if it comes to a brawl... well... Y'all ready to meet the real me now?)

I definitely identify with Wash most. He's up for a good time and goofs off but when the chips are down he's all over it. He can get serious and be very selfless when he needs to be. Mostly though, he cares for the rest of the crew and is willing to defend them.

used to think I identified with Wash, but one day when I mentioned I would happily smack Mal Reynolds if I met him,My co workers started to giggle coz they thought I was alot like him. the reasons they gave were:1) despite being a brash and compulsive leader, loyalty compelled them to follow me into good and bad situations 2)they felt strongly that I would kill someone without blinking if they threatened the people in my care.3)I'm irritating in the same way as Mal. Then they made me take an online quizz, and I had a 93% likeness to Mal, which made me feel kinda weird coz I'm a girl and not very tall and don't have any guns, but I did frighten a self defense instructor once.
