Lemme just say, with the Western theme, I always expect Bruce Campbell to pop up, all Briscoe County.

Aw, how cute, Mal and Jayne are the old married couple. But damn Jayne looks GOOD. Wow.

First Mal's wearing soft cotton dresses, then he's wearing flowers on his head. Huh.

"Zoe, why do I have a wife?" Hee. The whole scene was awesome, from that to Zoe calling everyone to "How drunk was I last night?" "I don't know, I passed out."

I need to learn Chinese, dammit. There was like an exchange and I didn't understand a word of it.

Saffron? Her name's Saffron. Great. Nothing wrong with that, except that I totally spent the episode thinking Patsy and Edina were going to stumble down the stairs.

"Preacher, you got a smutty mind."

Jayne named his gun Vera. Well, I named my car and computer. I guess it's not weird. He's just so happy about it.

"I don't wish to be wed to the large one." I'll take him, if she doesn't want him.

I'm forever going to be haunted by images of people juggling geese. Thanks, Wash.

I've realized something. I could be Zoe. No, really, I totally could. I'll probably be just like her when I grow up.

Wow. Saffron knows her Bible, and it's... soft core porn? I don't remember them ever reading that part in church on Sundays...

I just got Mellow Yellow stuck in my head.

I love Wash. He's got the best facial expressions, for one. And then there's the whole "I wish I was somebody else right now. I wish I wasn't married, and madly in love with a woman who could kill me with her pinky." Hee.

Saffron (I will not call her Saffy, I refuse) just needs to get laid. I mean, wow. She's going to run out of guys on the ship, and have to go to the girls. She's breaking stuff, too. I'm surprised Wash and Kaylee didn't break *her*.

"I guess we've lied enough."
"You're good."
That was a pretty good Go, Inara moment.

As she's climbing down the ladder, all I can think is "Inara, get some jeans!" And then there was kissage, and then she rocked the whole rest of the episode. I like Groggy!Inara. She's fun. "My head got hurt like Wash."

"That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth."

"I knew you let her kiss you." I knew he was going to think that, and poor Inara gets to stand there while Mal goes away with *that* image in his head...

Next week: I thought Shindig was next week? Guess not.

Natalie

Well, that's not from the Bible that I'm familiar with, but it sounded very much like parts of the Song of Solomon which is pretty explicit in a few places.

roj

P.S. No. No jeans for Inara. When I noticed her on the ladder I thought oh cool she's wearing a dress on a spaceship.

My boyfriend IS chinese and he could barely understand what they said. Something about "it's none of your business." I bet the actors don't even know what they're saying...

Anyone else slightly confused? The Academy? It's suddenly all purpose? I thought that's where River was and went all crazy. Now it's a place where they train sexy ship jackers? I really wish FOX would show the pilot sooner.

All in all, the episode was very amusing if nothing else. Mal in a flowery dress. I couldn't stop laughing for that one. And of course Janye named his gun. I wouldn't expect any less from him. Drunk Janye's funny. Him and his rain stick.

Book and Mal have smutty minds. Come one Mal! Inara doesn't hate you that much.

Questions:

1) Does anyone know the name of the actress who played Saffron? I know I've seen her before... somewhere....

2) What's the deal with these characters speaking Chinese? I missed the first two episodes so please forgive me for asking the obvious.

The actress who played Saffron is named Christina Hendricks. She was on the first season of MTV Undressed and played a recurring guest role on ER in 1994. Her latest TV series was the short-lived "The Court."

From what I understand from interviews, Earth eventually was ruled as one government by a coalition of the Americans and the Chinese. thus everyone who comes from Earth no doubt speaks both English and Chinese, with the other languages linked to Earth having faded out of use. This may be addressed in "Serenity," which I haven't seen yet.

There can be multiple academies; there are today. River could have been probed at an academy for military or medical research, while Inara and Saffron could have studied at an academy for Companions. Or, if you figure there's only one academy, it's an Alliance training ground for Alliance agents; they probed River to see how she might be useful to them, and trained Saffron but then lost control over her.

Of course, this notion of needing to go to an academy to learn how to seduce people is a bit silly, but then so are the hours required at cosmetology schools...

I think Companions are supposed to be like prostitutes in Japan under the Shoganate, another culture where sex workers were a respected profession. Those ladies also had to train for years, not just in sexual techniques, but also in non-sexual entertainments, such as music and dancing. That part of the profession got so sophisticated it finally split off from the prositution part and became a profession in its own right. It's still around -- you've heard of Geishas?

You miss the point. Inara is a highly trained and skilled seductress from a very tough school. Think of her as a Neurosurgeon with a glance as a scapel.

AArgh! It appears KTTV in Los Angeles pre-empted this episode due to a baseball game.

Got home, checked the VCR, and had a hour of not Firefly, but baseball. Went to bed sobbin' into the ol' pillow.

Have heard rumors the episode actually aired that night at 2 AM, but if so, I missed it.

Anybody have a VHS tape of the ep and willing to discuss terms?

Seems to be happening a lot. I screamed out loud when I tuned into the premiere, only to see the tail end of a pathetic stomping of the Brewers by the As. (Show finally started about 45 minutes late.) I guess a lot of Fox stations are former independents with long-standing Friday Night Baseball contracts. You have to think that Fox takes this into account when judging ratings. Maybe we should take ratings stats with a grain of salt until the baseball season ends.

I don't think it's the same Academy. A lot of schools use the word and my guess is there is a Companion Academy as well as the one where River was.

I can't agree, Delvo. Unless you're born with that er, certain way of walking and talking, instruction in the fine art of seduction would be helpful. And if you learn the art well, it can mean a huge difference over a Companion who is merely physically beautiful but not necessarily as skilled. I mean, I know guys are supposed to be visually oriented, but beauty isn't always the only consideration when it comes to attraction.

Also, seducing someone isn't the entire job. Neither is the performance in the bed, I would expect. I suspect a Companion's greatest skill would really be in Conversation/Listening -- another skill that not everyone is born with, but can learn.

I was also thinking about this today -- what about self-defense? To the best of our knowledge, Inara doesn't have any sort of bodyguard accompanying her. And when she plies her trade, her shuttle is generally detached from Serenity, so she isn't looking to Mal, Jayne or Zoe for protection -- she's on her own. Now, granted, she chooses her clients, and presumably they would be refined as well as rich, but -- sometimes the nicest exterior hides a vicious heart. And Serenity is flying out where things are a bit rougher, anyway. So wouldn't it make sense that whatever Academy the Companions attend also have compulsory courses in Self-Defense?

That'd probably be right after the courses in Advanced Accounting and Business Management...

It is official. I couldn't decide who the most interesting character was until "Mrs. Reynolds".

Ron Glass as the Preacher definitely has my attention except when Inara is on screen of course .

When Jayne made the comment about one day finding out how a preacher would know about operations such as the one those salvagers was using, I immediately began fixated on the character and wondered what Whedon has in mind.

I would really, really love to see the bloopers for this episode. I would probably pay money to see the bloopers. I want to see Mal and Inara having a helpless fit of the giggles. I want to see Wash screwing up the geese-juggling line repeatedly and Zoe losing it. I want to see Kaylee mispronouncing her Chinese lines. Oh, the possibilities...

^I completely agree. I've watched my tape a number of times (we were laughing so hard when we first watched it that we didn't hear some of the lines).

I cannot even IMAGINE what the bloopers must be like.

Did anybody see the Firefly blurb on one of the Entertainment magazines this past weekend?

They had Nathan, Gina and Adam sitting on a couch. Adam reached over and grabbed his gun. Gina gave him The Look and said "don't touch me." Adam said "I'm just getting my gun. It's my binky."

And all three of them cracked up.

Here Here Avalon. The chemistry of the cast is a definite plus and continues to carry the torch that Farscape has dropped due to Sci-Fi channel's ineptness.

Many people wonder when, not if, Firefly is going to cancelled. And its at that point that I become truly frustrated with the bean counters at networks because I wonder how series such as Andromeda can continue despite the lack of cast chemistry and strength of scripts while shows like Farscape and Firefly and put to the wall.

As I understand it, Farscape was done in because its special effects were so expensive; Sci-Fi decided to put its budget behind the popular but more limited Stargate SG-1. Never mind that, given a choice, the Farscape fans would probably have happily voted for fewer special effects rather than losing the show altogether.

What's worse is that the ending is a cliffhanger. Like S:AAB, the final ep was filmed before the cancellation word came down. Yet another unfinished story.

I just read through the script for the pilot, and Inara mentions studying languages, music and literature, in addition to the afformentioned seduction, though a smart woman is often a sexy woman!

In my mind, Companions are more like Giesha, than street walkers. The reason they command such high respect (and probably prices) is that it is not something that you can do without proper schooling, which would require an Academy of some sort. Companions, despite Mal's objections to the contrary, are not common whores.

Just my dos pesos,

Just to toss in my two cents. I really enjoyed the "Our Mrs Reynolds" episode. It's what brought me to this forum actually.

I hope Fox will let FireFly continue. It's one of the few around that's better the second time you watch it. The key to the original Star Trek was humor, and that's the best part of FireFly.

The actress that played Safron was very good. I've seen her on ER and a few other shows. yum. Please bring her back to the show... I'm begging you.

The things that struck me while recreating this viewing sequence of the original broadcasts are these:

The opening scene is horses. Other than the title credit sequence, these are the first sight we have of horses.

Along with TTJ, Inara's treatment if Mal seems a bit rude. Far more adversarial than otherwise shown. BWs sentiments balance a bit, but TTJ and OMR put a different spin with 3 episodes missing so far. And doing Martial Arts in only the 3rd aired episode, instead of the intended 6th - seems it would have had more surprise impact in the intended arc.

Kaylee in TTJ, BW, OMR seems more shiny than, say, Safe. Pointing out that Mal makes everyone cry and not having her Pilot, Shindig, and Safe background gives a different viewpoint.

And in all 3, they gotta kill somebody. I don't recall them killing anybody in Shindig.

And a scene that's been haunting me for the past week. Jayne's Never Kiss Em on the Mouth. I always recall the line, easy to quote, but for some reason this time I am struck by the quick-cut reaction shots. First Mal and Simon bodily turn full torso backwards to look at the creature called Jayne, then shot of stone faced Zoe, then shot of blank Kaylee. All silent. Then back to Mal, speechless for a few beats, until he can fashion some words. I don't really recall how poetic that scene and shot sequence was before.
