we know they would be pretty burnt out (and getting over injuries) post BDM (in fact they seem a bit that way from the start!!), so that would be a low point... but if Firefly had carried on as a series (as we hope it will)... how often would the crew need enforced RnR??

Mal and Zoe at least (and maybe Jayne) would be well trained enough to know you can only be combat active for so long - and Simon would have strong opinions i'm sure.

just wondering - since theirs is more a lifestlye than an organised time-scaled tour of duty (something zoe may have grown up with and got used to and potentially miss) it's hard for me to say...

but some shows have demonstrated the delitorious effects of constant action/tension on a crew/team/gang (etc) - personalities and motivations can get real fried... and a quick trip to 'Paradise in Space' of somekind might not be enough...

hope this makes some kind've sense... ???

I think there is a couple or more weeks between the episodes (definately two between Shindig and Safe), so it's not like an onslaught of one thing after another. Plenty of time to chill.

i would agree - except the assumption within the show seems to be that they are working between episodes - the wobbly headed dolls - the opening of our mrs reynolds etc... - and if Better Days is set between episdoes then the rnr amount shrinks again...

Out of Gas starts with the assumption of a long, quiet round about trip to the next destination.

It's probably a mix of slow times and busy between episodes.

Hmm, I think they got plenty of rest. Yes, every time we saw them in series/movie something was going bad...cause it'd be boring to watch them in anything going too perfectly. But they talk about "weak tea" jobs, and boring legitimate ones such as the wobbly headed geisha dolls.

But even if the majority of jobs had something exciting—not anywhere near an impossibility given Mal's track record with clients and plans—without faster than light travel, it takes days to get places. Assuming about 50-75% of their jobs are action related, with an average of three days in between, I'd say they're probably fine from a psychological and medical standpoint.

MerryK, I couldn't have said it better

They might get eaten by nerves, though, waiting to finish a job (the pilot, anyone?)

And I don't think they have faster-than-light travel. That would probably be to sci-fi-ish for Joss.

At least they get to play hoopball on those long boring stretches.

There would be regular duties too, cooking, cleaning, maintaining Serenity herself etc. Lots to keep yourself occupied and your mind off everything else.

Except, that in an army, there's a command structure and other units that can be rotated in. If Jayne needs a vacation, Mal can't call HQ for another merc. (Although it might make an intriguing fic if he were to, say, ask Badger to lend him a goon, and wackiness ensues.)

Cool; I'd like to try that one out

Do you know if Badger is confined to one planet, or does he move around a lot? And could you give me a name of a planet he's been on? I'd appreciate it

I just pulled out my Official Companion. It doesn't really say where Badger's HQ is in Serenity-the-Pilot, but I assume that when Kaylee is recruiting passengers at Eavesdown Docks, Mal and Jayne are confronting Badger at about the same time so presumably wherever Eavesdown Docks are. And although Badger's HQ is kind of ratty, it also looks fairly permanent, apple-peeler and all.

all fine points --
but without task rotation... maybe they take people on to do crew work for very short periods... also if journeys take a long time - then fatigue is an issue again - ala submarine crews and shuttle astronauts...
but perhaps not so immediate an issue!:) ho ho.

For a while, a quiet night on board Serenity, but then...

From Kaylees bunk:
(A buzzing sound eminates from a heavily modified "device")
Kaylee: Ahhhhh!!!! Oooohhhh!!! Yes!! Yes!! YES!!!

Mal (Shouting from his bunk):
Kaylee! You mind keeping that down?!

Kaylee (embarrassed):
Ummm... uhhh... sorry cap'n!

Jayne yells from his bunk:
Hell, Mal!!!

This is stated in the Pilot: Wash thinks they need a few days leave- sort of implied in many episodes-just being aboard a ship would get boring after a while, action or not- everybody would need a walk on real dirt once in a while.

Thanks, SS2 & MS!! again.

Also, being on the ship has got to be boring, at least for long stretches of time. The only book I've ever seen is Book's bible, and they don't even have computers or anything. So I think, unless they spend all their time playing hoopball, they'd need more entertainment devices then they have; or that we've seen. But, I am one of those people who practically needs a library in order to have almost enough books to read (you can never have enough books), so my opinion is probably skewed.

Well in the pilot, in the deleted scenes, we see Simon looking up info on an electronic dictionary type thing. I assume that they have eletronic books in the future, so really they could have their own personal library on one of those handheld thingys. I see Book's bible as being something more rare, something that he keeps in book form for symbolism as well, since he could easily have it electronically.

Also, someone mentioned them getting leave. I think that they get time off when they're planetside, between jobs and when looking for jobs. I would guess Mal would give them a day or so at least of rest. Remember how everyone wanted to get off the ship in Ariel? I guess they only get to rest in the smellier, dirtier outer planets.

Fatigue would show at different times.

For Zoe, now would be about right. Then again she may be just itching for a fight...

Jayne - as long as it is him dishing the violence and not the other way around, he will be fine.

Mal - IMO it will be less combat related and more with getting tired of forcing everyone else to survive against their will.

Inara, Kaylee: They are not normal combatants, so they will probably stay similar to what they are.

Simon has to fight, River is crazy.

All IMO.

EDIT - About a vacation or a leave - in the Pilot they thought they needed one and were grumpy. In The Train Job they were less so, and a period of time had passed that was large enough for Kaylee to heel. I would suspect there was a break taken. at some point. And OoG - it was supposed to be a week long journey of doing almost nothing. After the excitement, I suspect it would have returned to that same doing nothing (and recovery for Mal). But being cooked up in a ship for long periods would haves own downsides.

A plug, but Virtual Firefly have a similar episode to this. 2x08: Haven - "While Zoe and Wash settle into life on Haven, Mal seeks outside assistance in pulling off a heist for Mingo and Fanty." stillflying.net if you're interested.

Simon does seem to have the most stress. It is with Simon that Mal discusses River's manic behavior. And we see this in almost every episode. So, besides the everyday capers, Simon has to deal with River issues.

River probably has added a little more stress on everybody. If Jayne would keep his mouth shut and not betray them he would have fewer stitches in his chest. Having to go out a rumage through GoodWill Stores looking for replacement shirts after getting the last sliced up must put a damper on Jayne's day.

Good points. I did notice while watching the series again that Simon is helping River or preventing her from doing something almost nonstop...he gets a few breaks with Kaylee but you can tell that he's always on edge otherwise. I'd think River would be stressed a lot of the time because she feels what other people feels, and besides that being freaky, she would feel other people's troubles and stress. Add that to a disorganized and fractured mind, and it's no wonder she has episodes.

It's like "Ojects in Space". River hears the stray thoughts of the crew, but what context does she have to understand them. We know more about what's going on with the crew and yet we are guessing at some of the meanings of these telepathic messages River is getting. And now imagine this occuring over and over again. It is wonder she doesn't step out an airlock.

At least Inara has an outlet. I notice she often takes young men under her arm and guides through their first time. Knowing she is helping others must give her a lot of satisfaction. And a good romp in the sack sure helps relieve stress.

I notice both Jayne and Book work out a lot. You see them lift weights in a couple of episodes. Book is about the only one Jayne talks seriously with. I guess it must be Book's religious background that makes Jayne feel safe talking openly with him.
