Okay, very much in love with this episode.

Of course, spoilers abound.

I like Mal's introduction better than Book's. Of course, the closed captioning is still for the old one. That was also how far I got before realizing I'd run out of tape. Therefore I missed most of the first scene trying to rip open a new tape and put it in the VCR.

"She may not win any beauty contests..." I so wanted him to say "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts." Just to annoy the people who hate that Mal's so Han Solo-esque. (IMO, how is that a bad thing?) Though when he said he had a good name picked out for the ship, I'm going "Lola? Becky? Leia?" I amuse myself.

I know I bring up Farscape a lot, but here's another one for you. The beginning, with everyone around the table laughing and having a good time? It was "Through the Looking Glass." I will have to watch that episode later just because now. It also became my favorite scene this ep until everything went to hell.

< sings Happy Birthday to Simon >

I like that the fire goes out when it goes out into space. No Star Wars space firefight physics here.

I actually have a note written down, just "Poor bleeding Mal."

Kaylee. I feel so bad for the girl, she just seems so twelve and pouty, but in the feel-bad-for-her way, not the annoying way.

And Wash. Poor guy.

Jayne's wearing a shirt with the number 28 on it. I kind of want to add it to the numbers on all the shirts the Buffy people wore last season.

Oh, Wash from way back when. Complete with a moustache, Hawaiian shirt, and something about him that bothered the hell out of his future wife.

Since Pulp Fiction, it seems everyone tries to pump pure adrenaline into someone's heart. In fact, Alias did it a couple weeks ago. While I was thinking it was kind of maybe unnecessary in Zoe's case (CPR, anyone?), seeing Mal do it to himself had me all sorts of squeamish.

"Cap? Zoe gonna be okay?" Again with the poor Kaylie thing.

While I love Inara's dress, I'm still rooting for leather pants or jeans. Just once.

"It was my birthday." Boy didn't even get to blow out the candles.

"We'll freeze to death first. < walks away >" Okay, big snerk to River for that one. She didn't bother me this ep, either. I like this River, when she's coherent.

I love Jayne's reaction to Mal and Wash fighting, and I'm glad he said my thought so I didn't have to: "You're going to use up all the air."

So this is how Kaylee gets a job. Big hee here. And the guy was kind of skeezy anyway, so she was much better off for it.

Sometimes I love Inara. Her meeting with Mal was definitely one of those times. I definitely want to see more of this character, because I'm really on the verge of liking her, but I feel like something's missing. Which probably has more to do with the lack of linear storytelling and characterization Fox is giving us rather than the writing or acting. Plus she has nice abs. I'll trade her.

So glad he's sending them on the other shuttles. I was really wondering about that for a while. Okay, I was screaming at the TV for him to send them on the other shuttles. But still.

And Mal needs a hug. He's just had a really bad ep.

I love how Jayne joined up. This is why I love the guy so much. Offer him room and board with bigger pay and he'll shoot the guy next to him.

I saw the thing with the other crew coming. When they started telling him not to bring a weapon I had it pegged. Though I was a little peeved that the other crew, armed, backed away from a shot guy with a gun. But hey, they were running out of time in the ep, I won't nitpick much.

Aw, they came back. And Mal = TransfusionBoy while Wash = DonationBoy. Nice touch.

Anyone catch who the guy at the end was who sold Mal Serenity? My first thought was that it kind of looked like David Fury, so now I have to wonder.

SPOILERS! YES!

I mean... *Monotone voice* Oh no. I shouldn't have read this.

Oh well, I love spoilers! Damn, wish I could have watched it right when it was on, but I have it taped any way. Now I just have to go home and watch.

[They need to move it to another day! Fridays are killers even for great shows! ... Damned Fox network (joking) destroyed Dark Angel by putting it there!]

Okay, so from what I can tell, this episode is kind of a... Back story? Prequel-ish episode?

*Screams* Must watch!

Hmm... Mal's intro? Interesting.

"Han Solo-esque. (IMO, how is that a bad thing?)" - NOT BAD! NOT BAD! ... Star Wars. Cool.

I think I'll go home now, watch the episode and be happy... Since I'll get to see it... Finally.

Bye

There's backstory happening during the episode's action. Anyone know if this was some of the stuff taken out of Serenity?

I was amazed by this ep. Had a definite cinematic quality to it. Mal is an awesome captain.

BTW, there were no scenes from "Serenity" in this episode.

Man was this a great episode! Mal's new intro caught me off guard but I guess they're just trying a new approach. I think it's a little better than Book's. Helps to get the point across better and Mal's even in character.

This has to be the best episode yet in my opinion. Going back and showing how the crew got together was a wonderful idea. Zoe's origin's weren't fully revealed but I liked how they met Jayne the best. Wash had a mustache! He looked so funny with it. Would have been nice if we had found out what made Zoe fall for Wash but I guess we can wait for that.

Poor Simon. It was his birthday and boom! There goes the ship. He didn't even get to blow out the candles.

Of course Mal picked the loner ship. Wouldn't expect any less.

I wonder if the crew knows Cantonese as well, the ship was saying life support system failure in Cantonese. I'd be amused to see the crew try on Cantonese, the lack of tones will be even harder to understand

A couple of answers to other threads came out of this episode, if one paid attention.

First, in the new intro, Mal says that humans found a new galaxy, as opposed to the new solar system of the old intro, which should appease some of the nitpickers.

The second thing was that they had the other crew's weapons make that whining "charging" sound again, which leads me to believe that they may look like regufirearms, but these are not standard 21st century models.

And talk about "For want of a nail, a kingdom was lost," right?

Just my dos pesos,

Rex!

About that whole shot to the heart thing. I have it on good authority that an adrenaline shot is occasionally done right into the heart - but that's in dire cases. An adrenaline shot can be given just about anywhere and it will work just fine. My one experience with just such an application - it was done in the forearm and within three seconds I broke out into a sweat and thought I was going to die my heart was pounding so badly. So the directly into the heart thing - done for effect

Did the intro really say "galaxy?" I'll have to go back and listen more carefully. If they found a new galaxy, that means that they have to have some powerful FTL drive or space-folding technology. Or some more implausible explanation.

Yes. However, I wouldn't obsess over it, for two reasons. (1) Malcolm Reynolds may have exaggerated for effect; (2) Joss Whedon could have invented an entire universe of people, put them on the head of a pin, given them rubber-band guns, and still gone on with telling the story.

Wasn't planning on it.

Still, I was never comfortable with the one-solar-system theory.

So we've had Book do the intro and now Mal.

I'd love it if every few episodes a different member of the ensemble were to do the intro voiceover. It would be fun to hear each character's unique take on the history leading up to the 'Firefly' present.

Also, 'Serenity' (the Firefly pilot) is an entity unto itself. Neither 'The Train Job' nor any other episode are 'Serenity' reworked somehow (as I've seen written elsewhere). The only place you see scenes from 'Serenity' are during the opening theme song.

Everyone will get to see 'Serenity' for themselves on Dec 20 when Fox airs it.
