Now here's where I differ from 99.9% of everyone else here.

I think that the most sensual scene EVER put on film or video is the scene between Mal and Nandi when they finally kiss.

It was slow, full of yearning and pain on both sides. Sexuality was simmering, boiling even. I can watch it over and over.

The cut to the bed scene ... nah... Watching people fake coitus is never all that interesting.

Watching those two characters GET to the bed scene, now that children, is hot hot hot.

It is one of my very favorite scenes in Firefly.

My favorite:

Serenity: When River is lying down and she looks up at Simon and just touches his face to make sure he's real, I love it.

Ariel: When Simon says to River, "It's time to go to sleep mei-mei.", and then at the end she says "Time to go to sleep again." and then he says "No, mei-mei, it's time to wake up." Those scenes just touch the heart.

Objects in Space: Well, Simon with his shirt off, but more than that, I love listening to the commentary with Joss telling the story and philosophy behind it. It just opened my mind.

Trash: The tattoo

Heart of Gold: Not for the story, but for when River says "Who do you thinks in there?" That's awesome. And the whole Kaylee\Wash exchange.

Out of Gas: The three different time lines and how they melded into each other, and then listening to the commentary and catching even more.

Safe: Because of the whole River\Book\Book's hair exchange. I crack up every time I watch it.

Of course the others have their merits with strong points mentioned in other posts. They are all good!

To Jayne! The box dropping man ape gone wrong thing!

I have to say that I think you're all wrong.

The best episode of Firefly is the first one that airs when it comes back to TV.

"You didn't have to wound that man."
"Yeah, I know. It was just funny."

Well, my top three keeps switching, so I really don't know. All I know is that it comes between Serenity, Out of Gas, and Objects in Space.

Amanda4U, I couldn't agree more with your selections, and for the reasons you stated. Simon is my favorite, not that the entire cast isn't just perfect, and scenes with him and River just touch the heart. And well, Mal's tatoo, that just touches the funnybone.

This is a tough one. I really love them all. Lets see...my favorites... in no particular order --

Serenity -- How could they not show this one first??????

War Stories -- I really liked how Mal and Wash really try to keep each other focused in the torture scene.

Objects in Space -- loved the existential bent. Early is one twisted fella. Also really enjoyed how very similar and how very different River and Early are.

Out of Gas -- The photography for the flashbacks really made it for me. Also, the way that Mal looks at Serenity when he first sees her -- it's obviously love.

The Message -- The music at the end is so heart wrenching, it makes me cry every time.

The reason I haven't responded is because just when I think I know what my FAVOURITE episode is, I watch at different ep and think to myself "Oh, I LOVE that one!"

But at the end of the day, I'd have to say Out of Gas. Everyone are so connected in that show. It illustrates the depth of their connection. I love it at the end when Mal says "are you going to be here when I wake up?" Brings tears to my eyes.

Hmm. Tricky. In no particular order, probably:
Serenity~~it just sucked me in whole into Firefly. That and the infamous 'This Land' scene.
War Stories~~"No power in the 'verse can stop me." :gulp:
All of them~~With characters and plots of this calibre, it's damn near impossible to choose!

-------------------------------------------
"BADGER: You think you're better than other people.
MAL: Just the ones I'm better than."
-------------------------------------
"MAL: Gotta say, doctor, your talent for alienatin' folk is near miraculous.
SIMON: Yes, I'm very proud."

eeek, too many possibilities! And quite often it depends on what I've just watched. That said, my top three:

3) Heart of Gold

I seem to be in a minority here, but I really like this one. First, it's an effective protrait of how the distribution of technology affects how people live their lives on the border worlds. Second, it has a great guest character in Nandi (she's a female Mal!). Third, the Mal/Inara subplot here is IMHO the best exploration of their relationship in the show's run - I much prefer the painful, contradictory, utterly human moments here to the stilted banter of 'Shindig'. Oh, and Kaylee's conversation with Wash ("Were I unwed, I would take you in a manly fashion.") cracks me up every single time.

2) Serenity

What's not to love? I've converted everyone I've shown this to. Cast chemistry, dialogue, setting - everything is in place from the very beginning, and at twice the length it's given the room it needs to breathe. For me, it's embodied by the whole section surrounding Kaylee's shooting - quick, brutal action, character conflict, that doc-style camerawork, and not a word nor a gesture out of place. Perfect.

1) Out of Gas.

The first Firefly ep I ever saw. I love the backstory on the characters, I love the contrast between the early interactions and what the dynamics have developed into (most notably the juxtaposition of the two scenes between Inara and Mal in her shuttle: "You never could fly this thing..."). From editing to writing to acting, it's a masterpiece in tightly-controlled, highly-expressive film-making. Ahhh...

Bubbling under: 'Objects in Space'

But y'know, there are billions of great moments in every episode. Off the top of my head:

- Zoe and Mal at the end of 'War Stories' ("Take me, sir. Take me hard.")
- Jayne looking through Simon's belongings in 'Safe'.
- Kaylee and Simon waking up together in 'Jaynestown'. Simon's bumbling attempts to explain himself to Mal, and Kaylee's righteous indignation, are just perfect character moments.
- Inara closing the rubbish dump on Saffron in 'Trash'
- 'Bushwhacked' - the way the interviews are edited together

and many, many more

My favourite episode would probably be..
'The Message'

Mainly because it is so emotional. I always cry at the end.
Also because we get a glimpse of Mal and Zoe's past.
And that music at the end!
Plus Kaylee and Simon holding hands!

"My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

It is really impossible for me to say what my favorite is in any objective rational manner.

Going by the sheer volume of viewings they following order, but that might be watchability, not preference. I know that some like OiS and Message are lower on the list because they are more difficult to watch.

1. Out of Gas
2. Our Mrs. Reynolds
3. Serenity
4. Trash
5. War Stories
6. Ariel
7. Jaynestown
8. Objects in Space
9. The Message
10. Heart of Gold
11. Shindig
12. Bushwacked
13. The Train Job
14. Safe

Heart of Gold and Shindig have a glaring element which lowers than rating, despite the remainder being quite fun.

Trash - Just a hilarious story and a great premise, plus, EVERYONE gets involved which is great!

Out of Gas - The most well written episode and certainly the most interesting to watch.

OBJECTIVEASSESSMENT

Hi, longtime lurker, first time poster here. My fav episode is without doubt Out of Gas. There's so many great moments in it and my favourite line of the whole series, and one that's not mentioned alot, is Simon's "It was my birthday", to Inara. Sean Maher just delivered that line perfectly.
Next in line is probably, Serenity as Joss manages to mix all the elements of what makes Firefly great into two hours. the episode had drama, humour and a great insight into the relationships the characters have with each other. If only we could have had the chance to get many more like it. Here's hoping we will after the BDM.

Well, I'd have to say Ariel, Out Of Gas, Serenity and Objects In Space.

However, there is honestly not one episode I could do without on the DVD. They're all completely superb.

I can't limit myself to 3, but how about 14? No? Just 4 then?

4. Trash: Have to love the return of Saffron (even more than the original, I think). The episodes twists and turns just enough, but keeps a wonderful humor about itself.

3. The Message: This episode is just beautiful. The crew of Serenity find their way out of an impossible situation, but with a touching tribute.

2. Serenity, Parts 1 & 2: Amazing, simply amazing. If the BDM is this good, we all have nothing to worry about.

1. Out of Gas: This is one of the best hours of television ever. Ever.

Out of Gas would probably be my choice for best episode. It's like a mini-epic -- it has everything. And the flashbacks added a lot to the story line moving forward.

Ariel would probably be next on my list of favorites.

But Our Mrs. Reynolds probably has the most humorous watch-ability factor going.

I was thinking about this and wondering 'why do they have to give Joss a year and 50 million dollars to make the movie?' Didn't he shoot Serenity (the pilot) in like two weeks. Then we might not have to wait too long for the trilogy.

Heck if you gave Joss 1 and a half hours in a room with a camera and a light for shadow puppets you could have a damn good movie.

I can't wait this long the suspense is killing me.
