Not discussing the malady per se, but I was just drifting off to sleep when I was stalled by thoughts of the episode The Train Job and the sheriff who holds Mal and Zoe after the medicine is stolen.

It struck me how much the actor left an indelible impression on me. It wasn't just the character he was playing, it was the way he portrayed the guy. I'm not from the U.S. and I haven't seen him in anything else I can think of, so I was wondering if the U.S. viewers (or anyone else with the info) had seen him in anything else?

Does he get bit roles or has he gone on to land anything permanent? Does anyone else agree that he seemed like a pretty cool actor?

Cheers, gang.

Holy crap! That IS a lot. Good to see that he gets regular work. Just wish I could see him as a regular in a decent series that crosses the Pacific.

Thanks Jongsstraw.

You're welcome Eager. You actually did me a favor by asking the question, because like you, I think his acting as the Sheriff was quite powerful and moving, and is one of the reasons that Train Job is one of my favorite episodes. When he looks dead-straight into Mal's eyes, makes that statement about "having a choice", and realizes Mal's sincerity, it always chokes me up. I knew of Gregg Henry from some other things like Body Double, Slither, and Scarface, but I had no idea what an impressive career he's had.

I think I first really took notice of him in Mel Gibson's "Payback", in which he played the baddie. I love that movie, and actually find it better than Richard Stark's (aka Donald Westlake) book on which it's based. And Iove that you can't ever quite figure out what the time period is in which it takes place. 70s cars, rotary-dial phones, etc., which is somewhat fitting, since the book was published in '62 or so, and is part of a long series of caper novels featuring Parker (changed to Porter for the film, for some reason).

But yeah, Gregg Henry is great in it. And he's good in Gilmore Girls and The Riches, too.

To me he felt like a combo of Gary Busey and Sheriff McGraw. I enjoyed how there existed a scene where he lights a smoke then shares it with a prisoner. It made Paridiso lockup seem a little like Andy Griffiths jail in Mayberry and was contrasted with the serious nature of the Bowden's Malady conversation. A good scene to demonstrate the depth of Firefly to new viewers.

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

There are a lot of good actors in America, fine artists and skilled workmen with good craft, who have never gotten a big break and made it out to fame, fortune, stardom, and big bucks and temperament.
You used to be able to make a modest living at that level, a guest shot here, a cameo there, a celeb gig now and then, once in a while a bigger role in a movie.
Our Adam is one of those, too.
Wish 'em all well, they deserve 10 % of the money a *B*I*G* *S*T*A*R* makes for being a diva...

YELLOWJACKET

As nice as he is in Firefly as a hard working sheriff, he's the absolute horrible opposite in Payback. He's good at playing good or bad.

Paycheck goes to the top of my rental list. Thanks for giving it a plug kwicko and yellowjacket. I think I caught half the film one time on tv, but now I'll be sure to watch it start to finish and pay particular attention to Gregg's badguy. He sounds similar to David Morse. Another bloke who's fun to watch playing good or bad. I'll report back.

bluesuncompanyman:
Didn't that gesture of handing off the cigarette so perfectly sum up the quality of the guy! I can see the thought processes of Joss and Tim - he's gotta forgive Mal for all the trouble he's caused, so we need a little gesture in an earlier scene to telegraph that he really doesn't resent those who've been driven to crime. Trouble is it was so well done now I want more of his character. I could imagine, had the show continued on, he'd have made a reappearance somewhere, calling the Firefly crew in to help the town from some oppression that's beyond his means to control.

jongsstraw:
That ending gets me too. Everyone nailed it.
If I recall Joss and Tim were pretty much writing for their lives on that episode. A weekend to save the show because no one was sold on the pilot. Talk about grace under pressure!

newoldbrowncoat:
Agreed there's a lot of actors who miss their prime simply because they go overlooked for too long. It's hard to know why. Some may just have bad agents, some may not get a chance to stretch and show what they can really do, and some might just be impossible to wrangle when the cameras aren't rolling. I'd go insane if I tried to think of all the things that should have been, if only... My heart goes out to those who had to live with potential unrealised.

JEWELSTAITEFAN

I've enjoyed watching his work since Body Doulbe, another to watch if you haven't - I thought he far outshone the star.

His credit list includes Slither, which also included Nathan Fillion, Jenna Fischer, and her husband, which they were all working on when Done The Impossible was filming them in interviews (not Gregg).

Also keep in mind that TTJ was the actual broadcast Pilot, because the network refused to air the original Pilot. So it was the birthing of the series for browncoats, and Gregg normally does antagonists and badguys, so for him to do a goodguy (albeit antagonist of our BDH), and in the aired Pilot for our BDS is really shiny!
