RIPWASH

Not especially an official scene but in the BDM Gag Reel when they're all on the bridge yelling at Wash when he's trying to fly through all the ships. Ends with "You wanna fly? F'in' FLY! I'll be in my bunk!" That cracked me up.

Officially though... Wow. Too many to mention, but to name a few...

The ending of "The Message"
Several in "Out of Gas"
"Trash" when Wash asks how YoSaffBrige got on the ship (Mal: She hitched, Wash: I don't recall pulling over!)
and on and on and on . . . .

Zoe: "Get it running again."
Mal: "Yeah"
Zoe: "So not running now"
Mal: "Not so much"

My new favorite's when rather pitifully and maybe a bit scared River asks:
River: What am I?
and Simon responds.
Simon: You are my beautiful sister.
River: I threw up on your bed.
Simon: Yep, definitely my sister.

Jeez, I can't believe I haven't ever posted to this thread.
Maybe 'cuz there are 2:

The "wobbly-headed dolls" scene from Trash.

and the fade out shot, I think it's from Safe: everybody is sitting around the table eating. They pass a basket of bread or rollS. Jayne takes a big hunk, passes the basket on. River reaches over, steals the bread from his plate. Jayne catches her, growls, grabs the basket back. A little throw-away moment, but priceless.

So many to choose from but Since I'm a Zoe and River fan these are my two choices

"Mmmm, wife soup." Shows Zoe's softer side

and in OIS when River floats down to Mal. At that moment is when I think Mal accepts her as part of the crew.

Difficult to decide, as I have "funny" and "dramatic" and "amazing" categories.

The top two for funnies:

Wash's Dinosaur Monologue
"and we will call it....this land! I think we should call it your grave! Now die! Mine is an evil laugh...."

aaaaannnnnd...

Jayne's Diary Entry (for Simon)

"Dear Diary, today I was pompous and my sister was crazy. Then we were kidnapped by impoverished hill folk and never seen again. It was the best day ever."

I'm new! I love firefly, best show ever, I wish it came back, but with the entire crew :(

The scene that comes to mind right away is from the movie(serenity). After barely escaping from the Reavers, River is sitting in the floating car thingy, eyes open and has a lost face on her. And then Simon rushes over to River to see if shes okay and she responds by saying: "I swallowed a bug" in a worried expression. I LOVE that small scene. So cool.

Oh and the time when River shoots 3 people with closed eyes is the most kick-ass scene :D

I love the entire show.....

My favorite too, but a different emphasis (not that I am not aware of the cuteness)

The scene that got me was the song in Jaynestown, and I love the Kaylee "my good girl" moment.

But I love the end of the hawking for passengers scene. I love the obvious non Star Trekkian certainty that there will be a role for lawn chairs in the future.

But mostly I adore the look on her face, her openness and certainty that everyone should want to get aboard Serenity, that there is no better place to be, and her puzzlement that the rest of the verse just does not get it - as they ready the door to close.

Sort of a crystalization of the how I feel about the whole show.

See how I'm not hitting him, I think I've grown!

I looked at the question, and thought, hmm... favorite scene... and the entire Firefly season and Serenity blended into one huge scene, lol...

I am a huge fan of River, so I'd have to say an scene with her doing something in it, especially in Jaynestown the three scenes highlighting River "fixing the bible" Books hair, and her ranting on about how Books brains arent safe and the hair "will still be there... waiting." I saw those parts and about died I was laughing so hard!

That, and after Simon starts giving River the medications and finds her on his bed and she rants on about apple bits being chaos and she casually says "... and I threw up on your bed..."

____________

I LOVE that part! I laughed my butt off and backed it up twice to watch it again. One of those subtle things that makes you love the show so much.
Another subtle thing I love is another Jayne thing. The scene in Serenity when they're flying through the field of Reaver ships listening to the screaming. At one point when they show Jayne, the way he's holding his gun is so different than normal. It's not at all the confident "I'm gonna shoot some people" way that he usually holds it....it's more like, I don't know, the way a kid holds his/her favorite stuffed animal that keeps the monsters away. Shows that even Jayne is afraid.....or at the very least, quite nervous with the situation.

INEVERMARRIED

Probably the Mal/Zoe flashback in Out of Gas - the lead into the scene with Mal mashed up against the grating and then just the sheer good-natured comedy of it all.

"What's that, sir?"
"Freedom is what."
"I meant, what's *that*?"
"Oh yeah, just step around that. I think something must have been living in here."

Either that or the Mal/Jayne attempted bartering sequence in Our Mrs. Reynolds. Pretty much sums up Jayne and Mal's ideologies up a treat, to me at least. My favourite line of it is definitely,

"This the best gun made by man. It has *extreme* sentimental value."

Who else but Jayne Cobb?

Or my favourite could be the end of The Message?

Aaarggghhh, I don't know, this is waaay too difficult. Every time I think of one, four more pop up and taunt me. To borrow and tweak a phrase, "My brain is being problematic."

For River scenes, the last few times through the series have me hinged on "I never thought you'd come for me." She was referring to waiting for Simon to save her from the Institute.
After her rude introduction to the crew, it seems unfair that many of these moments with Simon are not witnessed by the others aboard.

I had the good fortune of meeting Jewel a few weeks ago in Orlando. I chose one of her pictures, the one you describe above, with the parasol and her hair up. She wrote " Ever sail in a Firefly before?" She must write that a lot, but I don't even remember what I said to her, I was so damn nervous with her and Morena. They were also part of a Whedon Women panel which was great.

I would say my favorite scene is in "War Stories," when Zoë and Wash are on the shuttle after her rescuing him from the Skyplex. Zoë explains to Wash that Niska would like to keep Mal alive for a couple days minimum before killing him, and Wash's response is something to the affect, "The Bastard won't get days." That is a very ambiguous statement and when I first heard I was wondering if he meant Niska for torturing him, or Mal for saying those things about his wife.

MAL
It looks, uh, warm.

SAFFRON
And I've made myself ready for you.

Let's ride right past the part where you explain
exactly what that means. Didn't you see you

SAFFRON
And I'm to sleep there?

MAL
That's the notion. Assuming you're... yeah.
Sleepy.

SAFFRON
But we've been wed. Aren't we to become one flesh?

MAL
Well, no, uh... We're still two fleshes here, and I
think that your flesh ought to sleep somewhere else.

SAFFRON
I'm sorry. When we talked I'd hoped, but I don't --

Of course I cannot forget the scene in "Out of Gas," where Mal is laying on the ground of the Cargo Bay, and and earlier version of Mal and Zoe enter the Bay to discuss Mal's plans for a brighter future. I especially loved the part where the two of them walked around the spot where Mal's body will be laying in the future because something made a nest there. When I saw that for the first time chills went up and down my spine.

TENTHCREWMEMBER

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

For me, there's lots and lots of very close seconds. Most of them listed above. :)

But the number one scene for me, in Out of Gas, is the flashback to Jayne's joining the crew when he shoots Marco in the leg WITHOUT looking at him, and says "Shaddup..." followed by "How big a room?" to Mal.

It just amuses me greatly, and wraps up Jayne's personality up in a nice neat package.

Again, the rest of Firefly all falls into the "close seconds" category, and arguably could all be the #1 scene.

Another one I thought of just now, and it may have been mentioned but I'm too lazy to read everything...is in OiS, when River has that sweet conversation with Mal outside the ship. She's completely alright for a moment, and you see the real River: bright, funny, kind. She jokes about Simon needing "so much looking after," laughs at herself with "that's the popular theory," and Mal is so protective and kind. Just a good little slice of life.

It's not my "favorite," couldn't pick a single fave anyway, but a scene that always stands out to me is the exchange between Inara and Saffron in Our Mrs. Reynolds up in the scaffolding.
Saffron: Oh you're good.
Inara: You're amazing, who are you?

There's just such a reality to the way they play this, the two super-savvy women who are used to playing each other letting their guards down and almost showing a "professional" respect for each others' skill in the con game. You just don't see moments of multilayering of characters much, especially written for strong female roles.

I'm sure others have said it but it's hands down the "scary dark side Mal" scene in Ariel Where Mal whacks Jayne with the wrench and locks him in the hatch. We see just why you should not mess with his people particularly if you are one of his people coz he's gonna expect much more from you.

Simon explaining who River was in the pilot. A beautiful scene with the montage of River and ending with Mal's grim threat on what the future holds for them if Kaylee dies.

I've often wondered if he was totally bluffing, or just getting a little revenge for Kaylee and would never have done that. It didn't seem like his crew would have stood for it. The more I think about it the more I wonder if this was one of the reasons the pilot was rejected. Mal's threat seems totally heartless after we find out what was done to River and what lengths Simon went to save her. I can see how some might have totally lost interest in Malcolm Reynolds after that. I didn't, because I don't believe he'd actually do it whether he meant it at the time or not, based on what I saw of him the rest of the series. However the suits watching the pilot wouldn't have known that and come to the conclusion the show was going to be so dark few people could stomach it.

Just imagine Mal forcing Simon and the poor traumatized River into the airlock, then depressurizing it and their eyeballs pop, their brains come out their ears and their organs explode. Would he have watched? Must those poor kids die simply for trying to escape from merciless Alliance machinations?

I just want to continue to thank everyone for keeping this thread alive for 19 months with your observations and opinions.

Not long after I originally posted it, I found in the Archives a thread with the same topic. I never meant to plagorize the topic, and I officially give props to the original writer here and now.

My own personal favorite scenes change over time, although it doesn't matter what episode I'm watching 'cause Firefly is one DVD I can pop in the player and know I'll be satisfied thoroughly.

Hello Jongsstraw:

I know what you mean by favorite scenes changing over time. If people were to ask on any given day I would probably have a different answer each time. As seen here, there are a lot of great scenes.

I can see why people continue visit here. It is nice to read through the other Browncoat's choices and have the scenes appear in your mind. Simon telling River, "It is time to wake up", and Kaylee patting Serenity's engine room wall after doing a Crazy Ivan. These blend together to make a great series.

It is nice that the new people discover this thread and add their own. Gives the rest of us a good reason to revisit it.

What a great thread! Brings back wonderful memories reading about everyone's favorite. I have so many but my definite favorite is in WS when Mal and Wash are being tortured and Mal taunts Wash about Zoe and threatens to sleep with her.

Zoe going to bargain for "her men", choosing Wash without hesitating and not even flinching when Niska hands her Mal's ear.

And then after Zoe rescues Wash, he realizes that Mal got him through the torture with his banter and Wash finds his inner badass, "He's not gonna get days".

The whole crew jumping in to go rescue the Captain and River just glancing and shooting those three men without looking,"Can't look, can't look".

Priceless!

Okay, you asked for one, but I just love that episode! So many great moments.

Wow this is a fun thread - reading everyone's answers, there are so many brilliant moments of all sizes.

Overall, I keep coming back to the very end of OoG. Mal's in the used shipyard lot, listening to the salesman's pitch, completely and totally in love. And the reveal at the end, that all the virtues the salesman was describing weren't about the firefly at all! But Mal's in love, love at first sight, impenetrable by logic or reality, love as idiosyncratic and daft as love always is. There is no Why? that I can ask about his immediate attachment to and need for the ship. It's a beautiful foreshadow of what he tells River at the end of the BDM. Beyond that, I enjoy thinking about what it shows us about Mal and about human nature and love.

My husband and I spent the entire Christmas holiday watching our gift DVD of Firefly. Even burned the turkey. Did not know this series even existed so we have years of mourning to catch up on. Who ever decided to cancel this series needs their head examined. Better yet such stupidity deserves to be sent to work for NBC.

This is the absolutely best series we have seen in years. Pick a favourite scene? Impossible, although I really did like the look in Mal's eyes when the salesman was trying to sell him one ship and he first sees his ship. True love.

Very Emotional scene.
