As usual, just making the announcement...something to look at while we wait for "Ariel"!

In Safe, the 7th episode aired, we start off with a flashback with Simon and River. They didn't get a flashback in Out of Gas, so we don't know a bunch about their background. I must say I'm impressed with the matching cadence, pacing, style of speech from this actress copying River/Summer. I looked to see if it was Summer dubbing over, but it certainly seems she was not the one speaking. And that young Simon played by Zac Efron - that kid could become successful.

And then Simon and River in current time each say "rutting" in the span of a minute. More colorful than he was a few episodes ago in Jaynestown.
Their flashback is from 11 years ago - wonder if that has significance.

Mal finds that something that River says makes sense to him, and Simon manages greater depths of miscommunication with Kaylee. Quite a reversal of their progress in Jaynestown a few episodes ago.

Further flashbacks make clear that Simon lost everything, his whole life, to save River - and he knew beforehand that this would be the size of sacrifice. And River makes clear that she understands all of this. This background could have been shared earlier in the show.
River makes it more clear that she mindreads, without physical contact of Patron. And surrounded by the kidnapper community, she senses Serenity and crew nearby. Simon seems oblivious to this capability of hers. Either telepathic or empathic. If River reads Simon's mind, then she knows how her parents have discarded her so easily. Very unsettling. She must feel alone in the Verse, and without stable footing, with only Simon to tether her.
And Simon engages in fisticuffs when folk are trying to set fire to his sister.

Book doesn't get a flashback scene, but his credentials from life prior to Serenity have Alliance Officers steppin and fetchin. Puts a little different spin on his worldly lines and comments from other episodes.

And our hardy crew are Big Damn Heroes now!

Ruby gets a credit at the end, although she spoke no lines. Doesn't this defy the Hollywood rules of crediting?

There was much to chew on in this episode.

Forgot to mention a few items.

The kidnappers state that Firefly Serenity is a "fancy vessel" - not sure if this is a reflection upon them, or the work Mal has put into it, after getting it from a Salvage Yard like we saw a couple episodes ago. (Out of Gas)

I recall the Actual first time I saw Safe. I was most highly perturbed by the portrayal of Mal essentially forcing Simon to depart the ship's vicinity, and then effectively abandon them, without a clear timeline of when they might get back, and if the Tams would still be alive then. This time I may have glossed over that, or have been less alert while viewing, but that was what stuck with me then - Mal's practical disloyalty. At the episode end he's saying the Tams are part of his crew. And he had the gall to claim he's a Big Damn Hero in the nick of time to save them from his abandonment.

Mrs. Tam saying that Simon is paranoid. It got me thinking, this is a Hollywood line meaning just the opposite - but when else is it ever actually used? I wonder if this line has always been a creation of Hollywood.

And River was also able to sense the distant discordance when Book got shot.

And the run with guest Actors continues, with Gary Werntz from Pay It Forward 2 years before this episode.

Kaylee wants to hold Book's hand while he's out, in the Infirmary. Says that he did this once for her - wonder what that's all about?

The girl playing Ruby was on ER a couple years before, as the girl afraid of needles and the first at this hospital to get Numby, in the Halloween episode.

Did you forget Book standing at bedside and comforting her when Kaylee got shot?
I don't remember if he literally held her hand, but he was by her side.

I don't see Mal as being disloyal, he has a hard decision to make.
All he knew was that Simon and River may have been in danger, but Book WAS in danger if he didn't seek help right then and there.

Book didn't represent a threat to the crew or ship. Simon and River did.

Whats up Moose

If we are celebrating the 15th Anniversary by watching in original broadcast sequence and pacing, Safe was the 7th aired episode on 8 November. In which of the prior shows was Kaylee shot? The Train Job, Bushwhacked, Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynestown, Out of Gas, or Shindig?

Oh yeah, I forgot you're doing that.

By this time in '02, many of us had downloaded the original version of Serenity.

Should have mentioned, after Bushwhacked and OMR, Safe garnered the highest ratings share in over a month.
