Book! Picked 'Serentity' to travel on. (Because of his attachment to 'Serenity Valley'?)

Obviously Mal already had the ship.

Sounds reasonable to me too.

Hmmm... so may bunny trails - which one to choose?

Do you think he picked Serenity after hearing the name or do you think he planned to join Serenity the whole time? Did Book know of Mal before they met? Was he secretly following Simon and River?

Well if Book is the 'secret agent man' we're trying to make him out to be, then he knew it was Mal's ship and is maybe keeping tabs on him? I don't remember if Simon and River were already onboard when Book meets Kaylee on the ramp. If they were, then this may support the 'following Simon and River' theory. I'll have to check.

I was implying with my earlier post that maybe he's just a man trying to make amends for things done in war and thought Serenity would be the ship to continue this journey.

After coming aboard and meeting Mal (later that day), he probably remembered his name from the war.

This is all supporting my hypothesis that Book is just a guy who did bad things in war-time and is trying to be a normal citizen again.

Inara knows who Book is because he was House Priestess before the Change.

Re: Book had to have been a career military man. He deffinately participaed in the war, but given his age and the urgency with which the Alliance crewman ordered him to be cared for in "Safe," he must have been a general.

Longtime lurker, first post.
Question, how could Book be a general when the the Alliance commander in "Bushwacked" did not recognize him or respond to his ID?

Re: I think that Book is most likely a member of a faction within the Alliance. This faction most likely wishes to protect River and stop the work of the HoB agents.

Comment: Book can't be a member of a faction within the Alliance trying to protect River. If you watch his expression in "Serenity" when Simon is giving his history, Book seems to have the same expression on his face as he does in OIS "... half a hump..." response. His expression appears to be one of disdain/suspicion/disbelief and his comments after suggests he doesn't believe the Alliance would do what Simon suggests it has to River. I don't think he's lost faith in the Alliance.

Which is consistent with a wish to use River as a witness against Blue Sun. The imperative for River's safety is the cleansing of the Alliance, not River's happiness; Purplebelly's Denouement has River emerging from deprogramming as a contented vegetable.
