RELFEXIVE

I just watched this episode the other day and it got me thinking, as so many Firefly eps do, for various reasons.

Was there really a big scheme involving the whole crew vs Saffron, or was it just Mal and Inara?

The way the rest of the crew reacted some of the time seems to support the idea that they weren't totally in the loop regarding the Failsafe Inara part of the plan, although that could be put down to good acting. They would have to be acting all the time, too, cos Saff's very sneaky. No quiet truthsomeness allowed. But I'm not entirely sure Jayne, for one, could hold up his part for so long.

(Guess we'd have to ask the Heart Of Gold lassies about that...)

So there's a possibility Inara just said that for Saffron's benefit, to get one over on her, even though it wasn't true. It would irritate the hell out of Saffy if she thought the whole crew had played her, but that doesn't mean they actually did...

Does this sound like it's possible?

Mal: "We're not gonna die. We can't die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so... very... pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die."

Watch again. It's pretty obvious, especially with Jayne, that they were in on it. At the dinner table when Saffron is spelling out the plan for them, Jayne almost gives it away with his eyes. I think the only reason it wasn't more obvious was the need to keep the audience from guessing they were in on it. Plus just the ridiculous notion that the crew would trust her after what happened before.

I'll take another look when me and my DVDs are in the same part of the country.

They could still have gone through with it and not trusted Saff (after all, it's not like Mal did anyway)... but it does make more sense that they were in on the scheme. Just means they had to act all the time as if they weren't... to be sure of fooling the viewers as much as Saff.

It was just an inkling of a possibility I had...

Mal: "We're not gonna die. We can't die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so... very... pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die."

KRAMER

Either way, the Captain seemed to be quite embarrassed when Inara showed up.
When Mal sat down next to Saffron, I knew she was going to get his pistol.
Oh how a good lookin' girl can make a man's mind stray.....

I re-watched that part, and it's fairly obvious that Mal sat with his gun next to her *on purpose*, so he could control when her 'sudden but inevitable betrayal' occurred. The only part he didn't expect was the nekkid part.

Yes, that was how I saw it as well. And though the nekkid part was unexpected I didn't get the impression he was the least bit embarrased about it when Inara showed up!

PHOENIXSHIP

I think my very favorite part of this episode is Wash sitting at the table saying: "I'm confused. Why is she on the ship!!??" His delivery is perfect.

"Why're you arguin' what's already been decided?"

Right. Because if Mal DIDN'T get Saffron to betray them, they would have to split the loot with her, huh?

So, Mal purposely let Saffron get his gun so that Inara could get the Laseter from her and they wouldn't have to share it (and to save Inara the disappointment of not getting to participate ).

That scene finally makes sense to me. Thank you all!!! I must admit I never caught on to that (and I was never sure about how much the rest of the crew knew) That'll teach me to neglect episodes (I've watched Trash the least).

Must go re-watch now... such a hardship

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

I don't think Mal was greedy about the payoff; the pie sounded big enough.

But Saffron hustled him, stole his ship, put his crew in a situation where she expected them all to die, and all Mal got was the satisfaction of punching her out. I think Mal wanted an excuse for more payback for their first encounter.

Plus, she never told him her right name.

PINGJING

They didn't sell Lassiter (sp?) yet, right? So actually, there's no pie, loot, or payoff to split.
