I'm sure this has been raised before, so apologies in advance for covering old ground, but anyway...

I just got done watching Objects in Space (again) and noticed something that hadn't really occured to me before. When River is making her psychic tour of the ship (or rather the crew), why is it that Kaylee is the only person who doesn't get a special 'insight'?

Would be curious to know Browncoats' theories on this.

One notion put forward for River's ability is reading suppressed emotion, which has a link of sorts with the surgery on her amygdala. The connected idea of Kaylee being someone who does not suppress her emotions is thought by some to be one reason for lack of a reading in Objects in Space; the exigencies of narrative being another

Slightly OT: River's cry of "Fire" in Out of Gas could be interpreted as a reading of Kaylee, who will have thought of the possibility of fire.

Only Purplebelly believes this

But she does keep her emotions to herself at times.. such as, in wargames, when river shot the three guys with her eyes closed, though possibly that was the only time?

No power in the verse can stop me - River

Perhaps the nasty look Kaylee gives her is enough....we generally don't see Kaylee with such an evil look on her face.

Suppressed in this context is suppressed from self-consciousness rather than hidden from others.

Does she really give her that look, though? I thought that was River seeing her feelings, the same way she 'saw' the other crewmembers look at her and say what they were thinking.

THEREALME

There is an "Inner Thoughts" thread somewhere that goes into this. Also a more recent one titled "Insanity or Genius; Fortuneteller or Deadly Killer?" The latter has my own summary of all the psychic things that River might have done. There is also a thread that deals with Book's seemingly violent Inner Thought. Is it "My least understood River..." Something. "Moment?" Sorry. You might want to check those out if you are interested. Also look for anything regarding "Objects in Space".

Sorry I can't point you directly, or even remember the titles exactly, but that should be enough to find them if you scan down the archives. They should be either in General Discussions or maybe Episode Discussions.

My take is that Kaylee WAS mind-read like the rest. Her odd un-Kaylee-like expression when she looks at River is, in my opinion, reflecting Kaylee's uneasiness of River from River's actions in War Stories. Kaylee, the trusting soul, is ill-at-ease knowing that maybe she doesn't really trust River.

That whole beginning of OIS is from River's point of view. She certainly does not understand what is going on. Also, I do not believe that River was physically present for that whole scene, down to the point where she was picking up the gun. I think that her mind was wandering... literally.

the look that Kaylee gives river is NOT evil. Kaylee is just stoney-faced. and the reason that she doesn't say anything is that she doesn't have much of anything to hide. She's Kaylee... she puts everything out there. i also agree with THEREALME that Kaylee's face reflects her uneasiness of River from River's actions in War Stories.

this is a good land. and we shall call it ... this land.
