I loved this episode the first time I watched it, and it gets better every time. I think listening to the commentary just made me appreciate the artistry involved on a more complete level. It's rare for a series to hit all cylinders so quickly, and it's even more amazing when the structure of the season is so clearly defined yet so unpredictable at the same time.

Here's my review for Firefly 1.8: "Out of Gas" (DVD version):

Overall, this episode is easily one of the best episodes of genre television ever written. The plot is wonderfully simple yet structured in a fluid and complex way, revealing much about Mal’s relationship to each character and reinforcing what has already been established. Even the smallest moments work incredibly well, and the entire production from beginning to end is an obvious labor of love. This is an episode that gets better every time.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

OoG is definitely my favorite episode. I love the music which conveys so much emotion, so much hopelessness until the end, when it changes to elation and wonder.

The acting in the episode was the best of any of the episodes. The easy camaraderie of the crew at the dinner table put us at ease, which sets us offbalance for the explosion and subsequent fire. The emotion and anger conveyed by Alan as Wash over the injuries Zoe sustains is very realistic. The calm, cool way that Mal takes charge shows us why the crew follows him.

When Mal is walking through the ship after everyone has left, closing doors, then settling into the pilot chair, wrapped in a blanket is heart wrenching.

The use of flashbacks gives us a unique way of discovering how the crew came to be on Serenity, how Mal found Serenity and what the ship means to him.

This episode was an emotional roller coaster ride from opening to final credits.
