I'm curious why Maniac likes Safe so much. It didn't strike me as the best episode, though it is great, don't get me wrong. We learn a lot more about Book, I like that....

He probably likes Safe for the "Big Damn Heroes" part. I rewatched it tonight. And while it's good, it's pretty Riverific and I would prefer something else. Something Washtastic.

Well first off I'm from utah, so I like cows. (he he)
Ok, Ok, truth be told, I really like River. I love this ep. Let me explain why. While it seemed that River's actions in this episode confused the crew, I really feel like I got to know River a whole lot more. It felt like everything she did made perfect sense to me. I am not crazy. I am just empathetic. She was forced, during her torture, to endure needles in her eyes and questions of what she saw. She was probably being used for her abilities to see into the future, and the present. And (dammn it)Mal thinks she is just having a bad day when she throws the medicine across the room. She is trying to express that she can't take any more tests. I really felt Mal was way too harsh in the beginning of this ep, but he is redeemed at the end when he claims River as his witch. Regardless, take my love, take my land, I can't stand not singing that song.

Simon is soooo gorram dense when it comes to women. I swear, Kaylee could strip off her jumpsuit, jump into his lap and start to kiss him, and he would tell her how heavy he thought she would be on the third moon of bumblefuque, and then start worrying about his sister playing to close to a candle. UGH! Can't that boy just get it on. Anyway, I like that too because it is so frustrating. Also, Simon can't think up a good lie to tell when the superstitious nurse asks him about River. Duh.
Ok, I have to talk about River again for just a sec, her ability to adapt to almost any situation immediately is phenom. She dances, she shoots, she speaks in tongues, she *sees* with magnified eyes. She wouldn't use her skills to save herself from burning at the stake in this ep, but she did when defending the ship while trying to retrieve the captain (eyes-closed shooting --war stories.)
The whole Book scenario was intriguing, but since my photozooming techniques didn't reveal anything on the pad that the official, at the medical facilities, was using to read Book's ID card, I have no extra info on him. Only the obvious, he has a past which allows him prestige enough to deserve immediate respect frm the alliance. Whatever that may be, I am unsure.

Only a few unredeeming qualities about this ep. I didn't like the aunt-jemimah-look-a-like nurse, who kept shpieling crap about making your home where ever life plops you down, and accepting everything live gives you as what you should keep on doing... blah blah bullshit. That kind of talk only keeps people from doing anything with themselves. Anyway, y'all, great ep, and it ends with a "Waltons" feel.

Nice summary, Maniac, one thing though...

I didn't like the aunt-jemimah-look-a-like nurse, who kept shpieling crap about making your home where ever life plops you down, and accepting everything live gives you as what you should keep on doing...

No, I did not like the gullible girl who believed whatever she was told.

I think circumstances can be harsh, but that is no reason to stop questioning things.

If you are in a situation where you are taught to not question, it is the mark of a weak-minded individual who will accept those circumstances as the only possible choice. You can always have your internal beliefs.

I really liked this episode. If it had been shown in order, River's character development would have made much more sense. The only thing I thought was mildly weak was the old "can't you people see how dangerous dogma can be?"...thing, but its a good message even if overdone.
It just tore my heart out when we saw that River realized what was going on, even if she wasn't 'there' all the time... and the back story with the parents was wonderful, if disturbing.

do you think that the Tam parents were actually telling the truth when they said that they thought River was ok, or do you think that they were deluding themselves, or perhaps even in on the whole thing?

Both of them are overly concerned with status and reputation because of their station in life. I think even if both of them were innocent in this matter, as soon as they heard the alliance give their sales pitch for using River, they would have sold her over in the blink of an eye.

I really liked this episode as well. I loved seeing River break out in dance, that warmed the cockles of my heart. And the scene at the end when she's tied to the stake, and Simon realizes that she has no idea what's about to happen... wow. That is such a powerful, sad moment: her sweet face contrasted with Simon's anguished face. Quickly followed by him throwing himself in the fire with her... and the music. For any girl who always wanted a brother, like me, that was a real tear-jerker of a moment.

Simon is a prince in my eyes.

Yes, River is a beautiful dancer. That irish jig she jigged to, was really some good stuff. I had a slightly different take on the end than you did though. When she was tied to the stake, I believe that Simon misinterpreted River's actions. I think he believes she has no idea what is about to happen to her, because she seems not to be worried about being tied to the stake. And so Simon's actions are truly heroic when he steps up there with her. But actually, I believe River has seen the immediate future regarding Serenity's crew returning to save them, and so she is not worried about her's or Simon's safety.

Aah, you may be right. She did say, "Daddy will come for us." I think that she is so advanced and her poor brain has been rewired so much, that when she can't find the words, she speaks in metaphor, and she may have been trying to say, "Our Captain, the one who protects us and keeps us safe."

Whether she meant Mal or not, she was right.

I would say you are probably right about this. Father Tam was very evasive when Simon was trying to explain about River's letter, but then so was Mother Tam.

I just want to say that since I first wrote this post, I have come to really appreciate "Safe" and now consider it one of my favorite episodes. Comes with watching it more than twice.
