ADMIRALJEDI

Hello fellow fans! I'm new to the site, thanks to those who are hosting, I appreciate having a place to go =)

A friend of mine told me about the Firefly show and I had never seen it before. I only heard about it when Serenity the movie came out. I saw the movie and walked out of the theater with WIDE EYES just AMAZED at the story, the setting and the "feel" of the movie.

I remember saying to my buddy, "One thing I really liked was the subtle tones of 'the Old West' throughout the film." He said, "Funny, I didn't get that." Nobody I saw the film with did, weird.

So Christmas rolled around and I began dropping NOT-so-subtle hints that Firefly on DVD would be a VERY good gift to get me. Well, I got it. I watched in order of air dates, EXCEPT for I watched the pilot FIRST. (Funny how those "pilot" things should be watched first, eh? =P)

That same wide-eyed feeling came back. And then some. The show is amazing, the acting, the setting, the stories. I just watch them over and over again now. I love all the humor, and the action. And Kaylee!! SHE'S SO CUTE!!!

So then this Saturday (past) the movie arrives on my doorstep (Christmas present to myself) and I watched it last night. Of course I enjoyed it, but I was somewhat confused by the initial conversations between Mal and Simon. I know the relationship there has always been "awkward at best" but Mal has shown time and again that he considers River and Simon to be "part of his crew." And yet in the movie they seem to have reverted back to "passenger status." Even Kaylee (SHE'S SO CUTE!!!) says, "You coulda made 'em family." when they were gonna be dumped off the ship.

Did anybody else notice this difference?

I wonder if it was done to give movie-goers a sense of the nature of the Tams' presence on the ship, without having to watch 14 episodes of Firefly to understand.

DONCOAT

I think you've got it. It had to do with introducing the characters to audiences that weren't necessarily familiar with Firefly.

To smooth the transition, Joss wrote a three-book series of comics that covers the time between the series and the movie. Times have been tough, and that's the justification for Mal's being a little tetchy with Simon. After all, as Mal explains early in the movie, part of the problem is that they can't take a lot of potential jobs *because* they have the Tams on board.

Oops, almost forgot: Welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy this home for lost Browncoats.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Oh yes.... Kaylee is just a sweetheart. That look on her face when Book showed her "the box" , or the way she was playing around with the lil umbrella, or the way she looks at Simon or The scene with her lying on the infirmary with Mal holding her hand (Pilot episode). So touching... So sweet... What a perfect way to show the special bond that she and the Cap has.

Welcome to the warmest place a browncoat can ever be this side of the verse. I'm a newbie myself and I gotta say... the veteran browncoats sure know how to make newbies like you and me feel at home.

Welcome, welcome!

I also recommend the Serenity commentary, as Joss talks a bit about how the lean times and especially the departure of Book and Inara have changed Mal between the series and the movie, made him more bitter and lost than he ever was on the show.

And yet by the end of the movie, having fought for something again, he has gotten more sentimental than he ever was on the show, as evidenced by his speech about love.

There's definitely an arc, and I really like it.

I would just like to say "AdmiralJedi" your story is EXACTLY the same as mine, except I learned of firefly from my dad who read it in the paper, anyways, did you notice how the movie seemed alot different watching it the second time (after watching firefly) well I did, And about your question I think that is what he was doing, and besides The browncoats are pretty smart people so Maybe he knows we would understand.....which obviously he was right

If someone tries to kill you. . . You try and Kill em' right back!

I echo the sentiment that Mal's just been getting beat down by life since the series ended, and therefore might be feeling that soon he'll have to make a choice between keeping Serenity flying and keeping the Tams sheltered. It sucks to be the guy in charge.

I'd also add that Simon seems to have lost faith in the ability of the crew to keep them sheltered. He might even fear that Mal will eventually want to consistently use River as psychic radar. Thus, the previously uncharacteristic aggressiveness.

I think it had a deeper point than that, the situation on Serenity has degraded, everyone is in a much worse state (remember Mal is concerned about a need to eat) and Mal has started to shut out people.

Inara is gone, Book is gone, and now he's pushing away Simon and River. There is no one left he can shut out, Kaylee is needed or the ship will die, Wash is needed or the ship won't fly, Jayne is needed or Mal and Zoe will die, and Zoe would be the last one he would drive away.

The transition from crew back to passenger is a sign of how much has changed and how bad things have gotten.
