I was watching the dvd again the other night and noticed something I got curious about.

In The Message Jayne says that River is 'a mind-reading genius', but then in Objects in Space it looks like the suggestion that River is a reader comes up for the first time and everyone, including Jayne looks surprised.

Were these episodes shown out of order originally which would explain this?

The Message was actually the last episode taped, so shooting order and broadcast order were different.

Even then, Objects in Space was intended to be the last of the one hour episodes aired. When Joss found out they were going to show one more hour long episode and then the two hour pilot before ended it, he moved Object in Space up.

The DvD order is the intended order of the show airing, so your point is, the Jayne comment about her being a "mind-reading, genius, can't even eat an ice planet..." in the episode Message coming before the revelation that she is a "reader" as Mal phrases it.

It is obviously a continuity error, but even still, I think ever since the events in Ariel, Jayne had his suspicion about her mind reading. You will recall how she talked about odd things during the time they were being held captive by the Feds. Not much of it made sense to us, but I think it made more sense to Jayne than he wanted to let on and of course there was the whole..."Also, I can kill you with my brain..." thing too.

So his toss-off comment muttered to himself about mind-reading is not that big of a deal to me. Objects in Space showed that at least Kaylee and Mal had feelings about River's nature prior to that talk. Jayne just showed them sooner as he muttered to himself, he was just more scared to hear the thought confirmed by others.

Or so goes my theory on the subject...

I figured it might be something to do with the order but when I finished watching it at 2am I wasn't thinking all that clearly.

Thanks for clearing it up!

I think everyone on the crew must have at least suspected it, you'd have to be blind not to. She always knew way more than she should have, I mean look at that conversation with Badger in Shindig, basically telling him his whole life's story, despite the fact that she had never met him before. I give the crew enough credit to assume they all at least suspected it from very early on.

"Haha, mine is an evil laugh."

It could have just been sarcasm. I've actually already called somebody a 'mind-reading genius' just because somebody else said that that person was supposed to be clever.

Jayne has a dry and sarcastic sense of humour ('What are we gonna do, clone him?', 'You do a lot of rabbit-shooting back at the abbey, shepard?', etc), so it wouldn't be out of character for him.

I agree EvilDinosaur's sentiment that Jayne isn't as stupid as people generally think he is. He's got some dumb moments (don't we all?), but he's quite capable of some very insightful observations as well.

Other people can occasionally be useful, especially as minions. I want lots of minions.
