What's your vision of the Serenity crew -- retired :O

Do you think they would, or do you think they'd try to keep it up until the day they die? We all know how much being free up in the sky means to Mal, so not being on Serenity isn't a point i imagine him ever planning on reaching, but with that said, i envision either one of two theories:

They keep doing what they do for the rest of their lives, all the way to the point of grizzled Captain Reynolds and his crew holding it down with decades of experience under their belt. (imagine that actually, could be kind of awesome) Of course the question is raised of how they would be able to continue getting involved in action packed situations after a certain age, but they could always get other younger additions to their crew.

or

They do get to a point where they realize it might be time to stop and abandon the dangerous mercenary lifestyle, but whatever new life they choose to lead, the crew sticks together. Maybe they could run a town on a planet, Kaylee could be the town mechanic, Simon could be the town doctor, maybe Mal's the mayor haha i don't know, but something along those lines. And of course they could always keep Serenity nearby grounded, so they could always return to it, if not to live in, just to be in it for the love of it.

Anyways, those are my ideas, yours?

WAKEUPSOON

Well, I always imagined that (with the life they lead) they may never actually reach old age.

Hypothetically speaking, lots of dangerous jobs in the 'verse, and lots of enemies too - someone could take our BDHs down one day!

Tho, out of your two choices, I'd prefer the first. They'd never leave Serenity.

--- O.o ---

This is not my signature, I have to write this every time I post.

Smile && Nod, it makes it seem like you know what's going on.

Might not actually be long in coming: if you believe the report the Operative is reading in the movie, Mal is almost 50.

I'm not sure he could stop. He'd have to heal all those gaping emotional wounds first, and I don't know how likely that is. The rest of the crew might set down somewhere, either separately and staying in contact or all together, and he'd be stubborn enough about it that he'd try to keep going all by himself. And, well, whatever happens next would pretty much be inevitable.

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

There were several "OldAge/ Ending" stories here about a year ago.
Got me started on a fan-fic I can't finish. But briefly, Mal and Zoe wound up together on Serenity, Kaylee and Simon had left and settled down to raise a family, but still had ties to the ship, Jayne had gone shore-side to continue a life of crime, and River had founded a colony of her own on another world. 'Nara, sadly, had passed on, after quite a long marriage to Mal, shipboard. The story featured cameos by Dr Hoban Washburne, Jr; Simon Tam Jr, And Katharine Tam, called "KT"-- "Mom did that on purpose," she said.
If I can ever figure out how to get it down on paper(or screen, as may be.), it may get written someday.

TWO

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at www.mediafire.com/folder/1uwh75oa407q8/Firefly

I see the crew of Serenity stealing something big. The Alliance is sending an Expedition to Earth – thousands of ships. Mal will steal a ship. There are Passenger Starships, sleek and beautiful, full of explorers and scientists in suspended animation. But a cargo of frozen meat Popsicles is worthless to Mal. Better for Mal are the massive and practical Freighters, loaded with the machines to rebuild a civilization on Earth. Mal has his heart set on a Freighter. No more small crimes for him.

In a long and complicated process, the Serenity crew get themselves assigned as the entire crew on a Freighter. Serenity is loaded aboard the much larger Freighter as their get-away vehicle. In the last few hours before the fleet leaves for Earth, Mal and Inara and the crew decide not to steal the Freighter but to actually go to Earth. It would be a grand adventure.

Mal can imagine himself waving bye-bye to the Alliance sons of bitches. Mal and crew will wake refreshed in a new world, long after all his old enemies are dead. That puts a smile on Mal's face. It would make a good movie: Serenity 2. And there would be the possibility of a Serenity 3 movie when they get to Earth.

SHINYGOODGUY

Here's what I envision:

A old woman tending to a garden on a ranch. She has long flowing silver-gray hair but is graceful in her movement. She comes to 2 tombstones underneath a huge weeping willow and lays a wreath of flowers by the tombstones that read "Captain Malcolm Reynolds" Loving Husband and "Inara Reynolds" Wife and love of his life.

The graceful woman turns to walk back to the house smiling because she can sense that company's coming. The ranch is on Shadow, left to her by the captain. "They'll be here any minute" she thinks to herself and goes into the house to prepare a meal for her visitors. She senses Derrial Cobb, now 16, and as tall as his father. Marcus and Honor Tam, the twins, 14 and someone she hasn't felt the presence of in quite some time - Zoe.

All are coming for Thanksgiving dinner. They all arrive by shuttle from Simon's ship - The Albatross.

VERASAMUELS

Simon continues to help River heal as far as she's able to go.

Maybe River ends up being a Sensei. Warrior/priestess/flyer!

Simon and Kaylee settle down together [on board the ship, not planet-side]. Not sure about kids.

Inara. Tragic heroine. I think that vial of nasty black stuff may foreshadow her end. I'm not sure whether I'd like her and Mal get together or not.

Zoe has Wash's baby [conceived not long before he dies]. A girl, called Sarah. A real mix of both her parents. That'll focus Zoe's attention.

Mal sticks it to the Alliance; briefly finds himself voted President of the 'verse after an uprising and does his bit to change things for the better before disappearing in a battered old Firefly. Goes out anonymously in a blaze of glory.

Jayne thinks that's how he'll end; blaze of glory. He's more surprised than anyone to find himself still going into his 80's. White haired, more battle scarred, with a feisty wife who takes no nonsense and gives him the best sex of his life. And love.

THESOMNAMBULIST

Nice topic :D

(Vera Samuels I like your ending for Jayne very much. I think it smacks of how life can do just that to a person.)

Simon -After having lost his 'wanted' status Simon returns to being a doctor. A brilliant significant doctor who advances medicine no end. He has to leave Kaylee behind though. She just wouldn't fit in. So he settles for a straight forward marriage. It's not exciting nor full of adventure, but it's safe and his family love him.

River - River leads a solitary life for most of the time, but she remains close to Simon and his family. During the working week she is a teacher at one of the top universities where she is also able to conduct her research. Her fascination with psychic phenomena leads her to write many books on the subject for which she becomes well known for. She never marry's.

Kaylee - Returns to her home planet and hooks up with her first love! They marry and set up a business making Firefly styled space ships. It's very successful. She has about 5 kids and lives a long full family life. Her grandchildren are at her bedside when she final passes away at the ripe old age of 100 - the exact number of Firefly ships in service at the time.

Inara - Inara is the first to leave Serenity. She settles down on a guild certified planet - where her keen business savy has allowed her a happy retirement. She flirts with marriage with one or two gentlemen who pass her way over the years, but they all have the same problem. They're not Mal. So she sees out her days unmarried but fulfilled. She writes books on her days as a companion and even one or two fictional works about her more adventurous days on a firefly class ship, that sell well and bring her a certain amount of fame.

Zoe - Zoe after having twins settles down on a quiet non alliance planet and runs a farm with her partner. She never re-marries. On a number of occasions she is visited by Mal, and they spend days talking about their days in the army and reminiscing about the good old days until around the time of her 50th birthday she never hears or sees Mal ever again. After Serenity, Zoe never ever stepped foot into another ship. When she finally dies - she leaves a loving family all of whom continue to run the family farm.

Mal and Jayne. Reluctantly these two end up racing around the 'verse together, doing crime, cutting deals, dodging the Alliance and undertaking just about every adventure imaginable. They're never rich, but they're free. The continue to fly Serenity with make-shift crews and ramshackled helpers who all fall to the way-side when the going gets tough. They soon traverse the galaxy through folktales and yarns. People love to talk about these two and their near death scrapes with the alliance and crime bosses has them celebrated across the 'verse like hero's.
Their end is never confirmed however and their demise has to be left to rumours, when a report about the two men is picked up stating that almost an enitre legion of alliance soldiers were deployed to gun them down after a bank job went wrong off the moons of Calisto. The rumour was never verified but the two men were never seen of again. Years later an exploration vessel searching the outer rim for planets to be terraformed, discovered the wreck of a Firefly class ship drifing in space. It's crew were gone.

During his life Jayne had three children with three different women, but he lived his life unaware of his offspring.
Mal on the other hand ended up having one child with Saffron, and Malcolm Reynolds would have gone to the grave swearing blind the boy was not his - had he not looked into his sons eyes and seen the very defiance he so often recognized in his own face.

I like the idea of Mal as Robin Hood [with maybe Jayne as his Little John], or the 'verse equivalent of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance kid. I made nods to the Robin Hood persona in my own fanfiction.

After Dragon con, I'm one of the people who heard Nathan reveal Inara's big secret. Won't say what it is out loud, but it's huge. Knowing it means a lot of Mal/Inara's scenes have a vaster unspoken undercurrent than before.

I've always felt Mal was very much like Butch. Love that dynamic.

Now - how many jelly beans does it take to bribe you for that piece of info about Inara hey?

JAYNESMANE

I think they'd keep going until physically the toll was to much on them. Then they'd probably go their separate ways, settle down on more backwater worlds and live simpler lives.

It's either a Butch and Sundance end, but with Zoe, not Jayne or Mal will end his days on a backwater planet scraping a living out of a run down ranch.

But I do like the Butch and Sundance end better.

ANONYMOUSE

Ultimately, I think, there could only be one end for Mal:

Without telling anyone where he's going - not that he knows himself, nor does he care overly much - he fires up Serenity one last time, takes her up, picks a flight vector at random...and makes the theme song true - "Take me out to the black, tell 'em I ain't comin' back" - because he just keeps on flyin' 'til he can't.

Such a man would never want to die anywhere but in space, in the company of his best girl.

Perhaps Serenity would become a legend in the 'verse, a ghost ship, cap'ns and lawbreakers claiming to have seen her flyin' by...
