"when Simon explains to him what has been done to her, so that he then tries to get them out of the hospital earlier than he originally intended (thus avoiding the Feds he had sold them out to before). "

You know, I've been watching this series repeatedly for nearly a year now and I didn't realize that's what he was doing!
I knew he said they had to leave early and Simon was suprised, but I didn't know why, didn't take that as any insight into Jayne.

I feel sheepish.

Well then, 'baah' to you, my friend! I feel a little mutton-esque, myself. After several viewings I finally decided that that's what Jayne was doing, but my decision was at least half based on a desire on my part for Jayne to be an ass with a heart of (rather tarnished) gold, rather than just plain ass.

My very fine hat's off to Kaosium for putting forth a little extra effort in compiling that list.

Still...what would Rorschach do?

Kaylee is the only girl I remember Jayne showing real concern for, eg. the touching shot of him kneeling outside the surgery watching as Simon worked on her in Serenity. That goes beyond mere sexual interest. Of course, he may see her more as a sister than potential partner. That's kinda my take. Of course, if she were interested in him I think there could be a strong relationship there, stronger than she would find in Simon. Kaylee could tame the beast that is Jayne and give him a fuller life.

Let's not go THAT far. Jayne as a brute is fun and often hilarious. But Kaylee and he could probably get along famously, and considering the way Kaylee is, she might be more forgiving of Jayne's unpolished-ness.

haha Well, I was thinking of the ancient Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh, where the lady tames the wild man by taking him into her bed. haha Of course, that myth is bittersweet because the wild man lost more than he gained by being civilized. He lost the ability to understand the languages of the birds and beasts of the forest which had been his family. ...as Wash would say: "Good myth!"

As Jewel said of her character, Kaylee is all about making the crew a family. She also wished Kaylee would have a baby. I can see Jayne being a father. OK, he would be teaching the kid about guns, but that's a useful skill! haha I think he already cares about Kaylee and once he fell in love with her I think it would be game-over. I can see her becoming his moral compass and controlling him with a word. I've known marriages like that.

As I said, let's not go that far. Jayne can have a happy relationship with someone, and it's even suggested in the short story Crystal by the show writers that Jayne is eventually going to have a long term, somewhat tumultuous relationship. But Jayne doesn't have to give up who he is or become completely whipped to do so.

Well, Jayne could stand a little "whipping into shape." Men, left to their own devices, often make selfish and destructive decisions. Case in point, Jayne's penchant for selling people out for cash, whether Mal, the Tams or his old partner Stitch. I think he does this because he feels no one will look out for him but him. He just hasn't got the "family" idea yet and Kaylee has that in spades. Women have always been the civilizing influence in society and Jayne could use a little civilizing in the best interest of himself and everyone else. :)

This, I could maybe see. :) But he still leaves his toenail clippings on the counter. My observation is no amount of intervention can stop a guy from being, well, a guy.

Roll? I just stick on on the counter. Much quicker the pick up the TP from the bottom, grab the edge and rotate your wrist a few times to free some of it up and then just rip. Easier and you don't have to keep undoing the roller thingy when you run out.

Ehn, true. Mine's on the counter more often then it is on the roller. Technically I guess it's supposed to be on the roller, but who has time for that?

There's no room on our bathroom counter for a roll of toilet paper as it's cluttered with all my wife's toiletries and sundry decorative crap. hahaha ;)

ANOTHERSKY

^ Sure you're not.

But as for Jayne, I think a few things have been spot on.

He grew up somewhere where almost everything has a price, maybe not Badger's 'all is potential money/status' price(hence Badger's line of work), but a sense of possible tradeoffs. There must be an exchange for everything.

This would really feed into his extremely pro/con way of viewing the world.

And while I think Jayne can have a sweet side, people read too much into what that all entails. Mostly I agree with what has been said about how he likes to treat those women he does have no-strings sex with gently--because why would he otherwise? There's no gain--he's not a sadist, and these women wouldn't be in a relationship with him where he could control them, cow them, scare the living daylights out of them.

No, I think Jayne's fight--his uneasiness, annoyance and one-upping--is with men. Women are for cooking, and some less-charged conversations, joking, and 'trim'. Generally nonthreatening.

I think Jayne has his life pretty compartmentalized--he's killing when he's killing and sexing when he's sexing and cleaning guns when he's not doing anything else. Not necessarily a one-track mind(as he has unfortunately been simplified to, in innumerable fics), but he's 'childlike' in the way that he does all of them pretty much singlemindedly when he has his opportunity. Again, I think this has something to do with practical trade-offs.

Literature class: The whore may have tamed Gilgamesh, but notice they don't stay together beyond a week of sex, much less a relationship or wedded with hundreds of fat children. 'Taming' Jayne would be about like that.

As for father/authority figures, notice that Jayne only openly bucks Mal when 2 things happen:

1. Mal fails to 'provide'--either they didn't get paid, don't have a job, or are risking their pay/necks for an emotional return rather than a physical or monetary one.

2. Mal is humiliated in some way--Jayne gets really uppity at this point, either seeing his chance or reverse projected empathy, I don't know. Maybe both.

Just some thoughts.

---

Going for a ride.

hahaha I'm a hard-core feminist! Perfect equality. Each can leave the seat the way they used it and deal with the seat the way they find it. ;)
