Regarding the original posters query as to whether "Book" is an alias, I think it's quite clear from this line of Book explaining to River in "Jaynestown" about his hair.

Book: It's the rules of my order... Like
the book, it symbolizes --

I tend to agree with all the Browncoats out there that say that Book isnt a real Shepherd or at least started out pretending to be one.

I say this because if you remember the episode where the bounty hunter sneaks onboard serenity and ties kaylee up and locks everybody in their rooms well theres the scene where Simon gestures toward Book and mentions hes a Shepherd and with out missing a beat the bounty hunter says "thats not a shepherd" now could this be because he is a reader maybe maybe not I like to think that they know each other I think that their paths crossed before perhaps Book was a bounty hunter and maybe they fought over the same bounty or Book may have killed or let go a bounty put out by the allience and the allience is now trying to capture him.

I know people say that he had that allience ID that allowed him speedy medical attention well perhaps out in the verse if you know the right people and the money is right you can get a damn good nigh irrefutable forgery or fake ID and since hes an older man he could have a general's ID and if you know the right people and the money is right facial reconstruction could also be done

Finally maybe he is or was an assasin or contract killer professional killers or hitmen assasins discise them selves as all diffent types of people to get close to there mark sometimes taking months to set up the actual hit perhaps this is how he had the funny story about the nady thing maybe his only way to get close to his mark was to pretend to be a shepherd plus i forget which episode he talks about a kill they found and he says he was most likely killed by a sniper and like a high powered rifle. Hitmen have be know to snipe there marks.

So thats what i think anyways as to whether he was sincere in his shepherd beliefs in the series well only Joss knows that..........

MADMAGI

Without giving anything away to those who have not seen the movie.

I believe that book was a believer - just like the believer in the movie. At some point he saw the light and is now atoning for his ways.
