I don't know that there is anything that can be done about this, but RWED seems to be getting more and more and more active, to the point where, as I type this, 4 of the 5 most recently updated threads on the whole site are RWED.

I guess this is just an appeal: Can we please get back to talking about Firefly?

Thanks.

what is RWED??

I looked it up, but I didn't see any threads on Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development (a canadian organization) so I assume that's not it.

Ahhhhh.....

Hmm. I see one thread related to other scifi, six feihua threads, and nine related to firefly or our BDHs. I don't seven see any on "real world events" so I'm kinda confused.

Not that I'm not saying you can't complain about anything you like, it's a free country :P lol.

Sadly, all those threads, and THIS is the only one I bother to post in? Wacky.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

RWED is its own forum. To keep it from cluttering up the main page, it shows up at the bottom, but if you check the top 100 threads, you can see the 'real world' threads in the order they've updated compared to everything else on the site.

And I agree, Griz. I've always thought it updated at a rather alarming rate compared to everything else, and that's been particulary true the last few days. When nothing else is moving, it is. I know the people there are fans, but they seem to spend the majority of their time on the site fighting about politics. It's very weird to me.

Of course, there are plenty of them who would say I'm weird, too.

I am selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes. I am out of control. And sometimes I'm a little hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.

The problem may be more widespread than initially feared. Recently I noticed something similar during a thread in the other sci-fi forum. An RWED style debate sprung up about a popular TV series. The only things missing were links to wikipedia providing proof to back claims and insinuations of ad hominem attacks.

Yah, like that never happens in FF/S "discussions". I have personally been attacked more venomously in a FF/S "discussion" than any RWED that I've been involved in. And in no place have I seen quotes from FF/S, etc given in proper context. Don't make FF/S discussions seem like they are calm when they are regularly far from it. Go ahead and present a view that the majority doesn't hold to see what I mean.

But, as a comment to the original comment: You make more FF/S content, and it'll be discussed. Or do you honestly think that there's enough content to keep FF discussion going full tilt for 5 years and S discussion going for 2?

Seriously, there are people out there that don't have such an obsession with FF/S that they need to obscenely over-analyse every little character of text, etc over and over and over and... There are people out there that have lives beyond those 5 DVD's and it actually includes things that are related to this thing called real life. Politics being one of them.

FF/S brought them together so here they stay. They're even tucked away in there own little corner. So, what's the problem? People can and do move on. It happens all the time. Trust me.

Sorry to be rude about this, but I mean, come on!

Btw, RWED has not become more active. It's the FF/S discussion that has become less active. There's a big difference between the two.

But, as a suggestion, perhaps if the fans that wanted these discussions would be less passive and more active (i.e. making new content themselves e.g. fanfic, fanvids, fan made "shows", etc) then discussions wouldn't wane. This is actually one of the things that I've commented on several times before. People keep saying things like, "This would be a great game to mod into a FF/S game", etc. But, basically no-one actually does it. And when someone comes along that actually starts something, support is... thin.

In other words, stop talking so much and start actually doing something. Your move.

p.s. Yes, I've actually started stuff before. So, I'm not being a hypocrite. It just didn't work out. C'est la vie.

I don't understand your point here. There is one small area with RWED's out of all the dozens & dozens of areas & features that this wonderful site provides. FF Fans, beneath it all, are just real people, and real people have many varied interests. Even in the Main postings area, many of the threads are about other non-Firefly sci-fi shows ^ movies & people, or what's on the radio, and other things not specifically Firefly related. RWED gladiators frequently post in ALL the areas here, and I see many of my distinguished RWED regular participants creating threads of their own on many Firefly & Serenity topics in the general area.
If you're saying that you desire folks to increase their Firefly intensity level here, that's ok and fine with me too.

Owwie, that was a bit rough there, Sigma.

Still, well said.

I know we don't agree on a lot, but you've definately got a point there.

Me, I am eagerly awaiting the Firefly MMO, I bet verse discussion will pick up pretty quick after that, if it's any good.

Here's for hoping,

I come here to talk to other FireFly fans, because I like talking to other FireFly fans. Unfortunately just about every topic that I'm interested in has either been talked to death, or is ignored by most whenever it comes up. I find ad nauseam topics on why "Wash really really really is alive, even though we watched him die on screen, because we really want him too be alive, and even though the Alliance was there to kill them I'm sure the Alliance did all in their power to save him" really rather boring. Its the same argument over and over again, sometimes with different players, sometimes not. That's why I don't get involved in them any more.

No one's stopping you from starting some FireFly discussions, I'm certainly not suggesting you shouldn't be allowed to discuss these topics if you want to. I can't see the point in posting pictures of each other over and over again, so I don't involve myself in those threads, I don't tell people to stop posting them and get on with talking about stuff I want to talk about.

Go on then, no one's stopping you. Come up with a topic I find interesting and I'll participate, don't and I won't. Please extend the same courtesy to myself and others.

Grizwald, did you perhaps mean the discussions that aren't exactly classified as real world and not under the real world forum but they're real life vs. FF/S directly related instead?
Like the 76th thread, the Imponderables thread,
the Pictures thread, the voting thread, etc?

While I'm typing this there are many threads about many subjects on the front of General Discussion and there are two directly FF/S related... one about the price of FF and the other about not leaving Serenity.

I noticed your subject brought out the real world folks to rebutt you quickly. I'm wondering if you're talking about something besides them.

If so, I have this to add.
Please understand that this is MHO. Only mine.
I belong to many 'Verse related boards.
I've noticed that they all trend toward this stuff as time goes by. How could they do else?

Let's be frank... there is nothing new in the 'Verse to talk about.
We are awaiting comics.
We are awaiting the game.
We are awaiting updates to the role playing books and game.
There isn't anything else to look forward to.
We have little hope of a continuation of the 'Verse on film at this point. ( That doesn't mean I've given up hope entirely, nor does it mean I don't wish fervently for more! It just means I'm realistic. )
What that boils down to then is that we are a community. So we talk about many subjects and like all communities, we have arguing folks who love the poli threads, folks who want to see each other, threads for being kind to each other, special interests and fun and a bar.

I miss being excited about FF/S too, I miss those days. I miss the early camaraderie and the sheer fun it was to be so wrapped up in something. But that time has passed. We're in the trenches now and waiting. So like all good soldiers we're exchanging food, sneaking whiskey, telling jokes, exchanging pictures and discussing those we love and finding games to play. It's the natural progression of things.

Thus Haken's new site he's making....I suspect he sees the changes occurring and knows we need a new "town" to play in.

I won't leave here, no matter more FF/S. This boat is my home. I love it here.
Besides, I'm a Browncoat and I'm stubborn like Mal... I'll wait til the Cap'n gets back.

What happened? He see your face?

Yup FM, Hence "ShinyUniverse". IMO, Haken created (by my poor mem. and his words) S.U. for this very reason to keep the great community alive and broaden the topics for us to share.

Definitely agree it is less FF content and not necessarily more RWED content.

I remember a time when the estimated value of FFF was near 95K due to traffic and hits. Think the last time I looked it was around 27K.

To be honest, we are lucky to have the traffic we do now, which is largely in part due to RWED, caption games, other series, themed threads, etc.

I remember my first visit here. First, I was blasted for putting up the "Dreaded" petition thread. (ducks, my own fault, didn't spend enough time researching) Then I ran across a thread of two old-timers discussing how we should stick to FF related stuff. They basically said, I could give a "rats ass" about what hair bow someone is wearing or what TV show they are watching tonight, let’s just talk FF. 'Course, I couldn't let that slide, and on my third or so post (riskin' eternal FFF damnation) I came up with this. "You guys sound like some Uber-touring band fans. (Say that 3 times fast) New fans come along doing things their way and it's unacceptable. Old Fan: Well, u weren't there in '76. That’s when the real shit went down." Well, that is coming up on 3 years ago. I currently talk “Heroes” each week with that very guy.

Classic Clique. RL or VL it’s all the same. ...and I am sure the numbers we need(ed) for a sequel/continuation will include Flans from every kind of clique that has formed on this V Community.

So, ease up, we're all FF fans here.

Certified grizwald-free. Grenades cost extra.

Just thought I'd share some rations while I wait in the trenches with y'all.

Content on this site doesn't bother me -- sometimes it's FF related, sometimes not. I come here for the respectful folk that hang about. I stay in the proper categories and read the little tidbits that I find interesting. I'd rather read about Heroes or knitting here than elsewhere. People here are just nicer.

Well it probably went more like you stuck in an infinite irrational loop and me eventually leaving because I couldn’t reason with you. Of course I know that you declare victory as soon as I leave, but I just don’t that much patience.

Wow Finn... Couldn't have said it better myself. Probably the most annoying human being I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

I've got quite a bit more patience than you though. He's left the last two arguments we got in, both times stating that I would no doubt claim victory although he was the bigger man for pussing out, but at least the last time he didn't accuse me of having sex with my mom or some other such rediculousness like he did the other time he lost his composure.

Wow... you've been around here even longer than me! (although I was lurking a while before I joined.)

I prefer RWED because it's a way to stay in touch with fellow browncoats and discuss topical issues with smart people. Most of us who've been around here for years have said about all we can think of to say on Firefly. It's the best damned series ever to grace the "vast wasteland", hands down. But how many different ways can you say that? Five years worth?

Actually I kept giving reasoning; you kept saying "no you're wrong" over and over, then insulted me and left. But I'm sure you characterise that as actually being the more reasonable or rational poster, the same as Jack characterises his insulting people at every turn my fault .

Jack, I left because you'd stopped discussing the topic, and you were fully into ‘hate people you disagree with’ mode. I have no desire to have a battle of wits with someone so disarmed, it is most unseemly. Not to mention Right wing Authoritarians bore me, even if they have the funny quirk of trying to convince everyone their libertarians.
