Despite a user average of 9.1, the IMDb has done their funky rating thing and moved the exact rating of "Serenity" down to 7.8. The good part: it's on the Top 250 list, at #245.

YEEHAW!!!

And the only group really holding us back are the under 18 male demographic (Not surprising. I remember how crappy my taste was at that age. I'm sure some of the men and most of the women will agree )

* editted to add: And check out our rankings in the other categories where the movie is eligible.

#3 in Top Rated "Action" Titles ( http://www.imdb.com/chart/action )
#2 in Top Rated "Adventure" Titles ( http://www.imdb.com/chart/adventure )
#2 in Top Rated "2000s" Titles ( http://www.imdb.com/chart/2000s )

and (drum rolllllllll)

#1 in Top Rated "Sci-Fi" Titles ( http://www.imdb.com/chart/scifi )

Top of the sci-fi list! Ahead of Star Wars! That makes me fill up

But I don't understand why they dropped it to 7.8 for the main list. Seems unfair to me, why did they do that?

I mean I understand that they have some kooky formula, but I don't get how it can be ahead of Star Wars in the sci-fi list and behind in the main one.

No clue. But the fact that it's ranked as the #1 sci-fi film ever really kicks ass.

The have a complicated method of calculating scores (see the bottom of the chart web pages). It is affected by the minimum number of votes for that chart. I guess that the minimum number of votes for the sci-fi chart is less that that of the main top 250 chart and since Serenity is only just above the minimum votes number it has a significant effect on the score. They also only count votes of people who have voted for lots of films with a variety of scores. Both these things prevent a film getting near the top unless lots of people have rated it and makes it harder for fans to artificially boost the score of one film.

If you think about it mostly people who are fans of Firefly will have seen it and therefore are likely to like it more than random movie goers. This gives it a temporarily inflated average score but IMDB's cleverly weighted calculation stops it from topping the all time top 250.

We'll only get a true idea of where it falls after it is released and a few more thousand people rate it.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Others have explained IMDB's formula, so I won't get into it again. As for SW being behind in SF but ahead overall, most of the higher votes for SW are in the marketed-to-death-crap-franchise-blockbuster category.

This is awesome! I was just looking at this list earlier in the week wondering why Serenity wasn't on it, even though it already had a rating of 9.1! That's when I noticed the formula they use at the bottom. I worked out the math and I came up with an adjusted rating of 7.98. The lowest average on the list was 7.8, which confused me until I noticed they don't count all the votes, just those who are registered or something.

I was thinking about posting a request for people to register to have their votes counted, but I guess enough people finally qualified for Serenity to make the list. Even if it doesn't climb much higher on the list, I'm proud for it to be compared to such great films that are on it. Proves we knew what we were talking about. Hopefully, someone not familiar with the movie will notice it on the list and wonder what all the hubub is about.

I gave it a 10, not because I wanted to boost it's rating. But because I think it deserved it. Few movies do in my opinion. They have to have a lasting affect on me to be considered that good. For Serenity, I noticed it as I walked back to the car from the Comic Con screening with Joss Whedon in attendance. It was an emotional roller coaster ride and I felt completely drained afterwards.

I'll be there Sept 30th to go through it all over again.

A problem, I think, is that essentially the only people who have voted for it are those who either went to the screenings, or are such devoted fans that they gave it a 10 without having seen it yet. The rating that Serenity has now is not representative of the general public's opinion. If it's still top of the Sci-Fi list when it has 50,000 votes in mid-november, then I'll be cheering. For now, meh. It's cool, but I'm not cheering yet.

It might have something to do with the (possibly) large amount of users who peruse IMDB, unable to vote because they don't want to register.
