America loves a winner!

Was listening ( albiet briefly ) to AA this morning, during the movie review segment of 'Morning Sedition'. The host and some reviewer ( forget from where at the moment ) were briefly going over some of the summer movies. The discussion of which movies did well, and why, along w/ the summer bombs. They came to the conclusion that lots of marketing = big $$ at the box office, for the most part. Even a bad movie can sell tickets the first weekend, and practically pay for its self. THEN the talk about movies to look forward to in Sept. There was talk of a new Vigo Mortensen movie, as well as a couple others I glossed over. I kept waiting to hear, " ..and from Joss Whedon, something called SERENITY... " or something to that affect. But narry a word!

I keep hearing how great the marketing is for the BDM, but then when I look around, no one seems to have heard about it! What's the deal ?

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

I guess we just need to drop the people at Morning Sedition some emails and phone calls.
-- not beligerent, mind you. Just to pimp the film.

I've gotten the host of the noon sports-talk show here to mention the show and the movie a time or two. For whatever that's worth.

On Air America, I think our best bet would be to try and get the word to Janeane Garaphalo (WOW I just massacred her name. Badly. I think.). She seems the type to have enjoyed Joss's work..

Yep, that's all it takes, really, just a quiet mention, kind of a 'check this out, it looks pretty good.." kinda thing, and move on.

If they mention it, sweet - if they don't, *shrug*, you just go to the next guy.

In this day and age of pushy sales people and telemarketing, folks get real hostile when ya push at em, so even if you don't get a reaction, being polite and letting it go plants the seed best, you see.

And when they spot the DVD set later in some store that's been guerilla-marketed, "Hey, that guy was talkin about this, hmm, can't be worse than american idol, could it ?"....

I'll note that I convinced my local independant video store to put the DVDs on shelf for rental, and they seem to be doin well enough.

One quiet, offhand mention is worth a lot, even if it doesn't seem so on the spot.

Always a good idea. Air America sucks. But hey, I'd steal from little kids to keep my radio station on the air if I had to, so you can't blame them for that. Luckily Conservative talk radio makes money.

I suggest you write a letter talking about how Serenity is a movie about George Bush's evil plan to crash planes into buildings to justify a war for oil.

Then they'd spend weeks talking about how great the movie is, narry a clue about what the movie is really about.

We don't have to worry about them finding out the truth, they never found out that Michael Moore guy.

Ha ha ha! Ya gots a devious mind, HERO. I'd have not thought of that angle, but it's worth a try.

I've dropped a few e-mails to radio that I DO listen to , but beyond that I'm a bit gun shy at trying to force feed the BDM at anyone else. Maybe I should rethink my ways.

Typical conservative argument tactic: parse until you can find something to use, regardless of meaning or context.

Let's try to keep our political rants in the Real World section, where they belong. Otherwise I'm just going to get exhausted. How about those of us who enjoy Air America try to get the BDM some recognition there, and you can work on Rush, O'Reilly, and Drudge?

DITHER

Glenn Beck is a big movie goer. Talks about them all the time. Hasn't mentioned Serenity yet but I'm sure he will sooner or later. Don't know if that will be a good thing or not.

While "AirAmerica" doesn't mention Serenity, let my point out that "The Weekly Standard", the most influential neoconservative magazine in the country, published a web article about it all the way back in June, which I promptly forwarded to all of my conservative friends.

DAWNSISTER

I have been gently prodding Mike Mayo, the movie critic and writer on the Video Hound series to watch FF and check out Serenity. Gentle, is the operative word here. He has written me to tell me he is now hooked and so is his wife. At the moment they are dealing them out one ep. a night!

PS. He's also got a great radio show and podcast.

I've definately got a talk radio habit.

Kudos to DawnSister for getting Mike Mayo hooked... I've been meaning to email Max and Mike about this little Firefly obsession of mine.

Ohhh yeeaaah...Of course, they don't usually talk about upcoming movies until opening weekend. I was actually kind of psyched that Serenity is PG-13, because Glenn might actually go see it. I'm not so sure he'll like it (it's not exactly The Real America), but I bet Stu will like it, and nothing's funnier than the whole crew not agreeing on a film.

Also, for my part, I sent Glenn an email about my experience with Firefly and Serenity a few months back. I made sure to keep it within the context of the discussion on the program that day, and I know for a fact it was read by the man and sparked some interest.

Use to listen to Glenn Beck here in Atlanta, before the station made program changes. Michael Medved also does movie reviews, but I'm not holding my breath on expecting a good rewview from him. Laura Inraham might make mention of it too.

Gotta admit, that most talk radio is conservative, and most conservatives don't 'get' much of the SciFi/ Fantasy stuff at first glance. I'm a bit of the exception, as I'm a conserative myself.

Yeah, I'm a talk radio junkie, btw.

CHIPCRIS

As a Browncoat and the engineer for Air America when "Morning Sedition" airs, you can be sure not only will Dan and Brendan (the producers and hosts of today's show while Marc & Mark are on vacation) hear of this, I'll make sure they see this very thread!! (I already mentioned it a few seconds ago with the board op for the show.)

I admit not hearing the snub though. I was "hearing" the show, but listening more for technical quality and such, not content.

This will be dealt with!! :)

TRACY

It's so funny how so many Browncoats are in places where they can tell others, "Psst! Check it out! This is good stuff!" Reminds me, in a good way, of "Fight Club."

Incidentally - the subtitling company I work for got "Serenity" to be closed-captioned in English. The person in charge of the P.O.s is pushing to allow us to do the subs in Spanish... by yours truly. Keep your fingers crossed. I'll let you know of any developments.

MAL: If anyone gets nosy, just, you know... shoot 'em.
ZOE: Shoot 'em?
MAL: Politely.
