Firefly goes Star Trek?

Most likely, this is what would have happened if UPN had purchased the rights to Firefly.

Not only is it funny, but it's good. Where'd you get such great quality out of mpg's?

Btw, you did an excellent job timing the ship's blast-offs with the music.

The P. Stewart monologue however, needs a rewrite. I proffer:

Space: it's really big.
These are the voyages of the transport, "Firefly".
Its continuing mission: to find strange, new jobs;
to keep flying, despite constant mechanical failure;
to boldly lust after a crewmember of the opposite gender...

Any other suggestions?

HAhaha, thats awsome!

As the other said, great job syncing up the engine "noise"()

If only you could convince patrick stewart to read that alternate monologue....

Was I the only one thinking you were going to match up characters with their respective Trek characters? Haha, how would that work?

Mal as Picard, since he's the captain and all,
Zoe as Riker, Jayne as Worf, Kaylee as Geordi (mechanic, engineer, same thing), Simon as Dr. Crusher (hehe), River as Wesley (genius kid).

I'm having a bit more trouble with Wash, Inara, and Book. Maybe Inara as a Troi figure, since she's always counseling anyway.

Great ideas! Though, I'd kind of like to see River as a young Q character, myself.

I see Inara as Counselor Troi, though it doesn't seem to do her justice. Hmmm.

I know this sounds stupid, but the closest Star Trek character for Wash seems to be Tom Paris.

Book? Now there's a tough one. How about Sisko, the Emissary?

Is TRS80 still making DVDs? I just read through the thread and it seems like I missed out on the I.P.O. If not, how do I get them, and who do I have to kill? 'Cause I'll do it....really.

Inara = Councilor
Wash = Paris
Book = Guinan, he has the religiosity mysticism "Gota have faith" thing going on.

Ah, Guinan! I had forgotten her. Seems the perfect choice for Book.

I can't think of a better match for Kaylee, but Geordi is still quite a stretch.

I don't think Star Trek has a Kaylee-like character in their whole universe.

My hubby is a big Trek fan ( )and he agrees. There is no one like Kaylee in (sp?) Roddenberry's 'verse.

I'm not sure I would go that far, but no one comes to mind. Which is odd, most shows have their resident inocent technical (er.. mechanical) genius.

Think Lucas Wolenczek of seaquest. Admittedly not a mechanic, but the innocence and genius is there.

In an earlier post, I suggested that River be a young Q character. Not so sure, now.

What about Reginald Barclay played by Dwight Schultz? Hmmm. The truth is, there is no River in the Star Trek Universe, either.

I like the Zoe=Riker connection, but I think Tasha (Denise Crosby) makes a good Zoe too.

I know this thread started out with a Next Generation theme, but if you look at all of Star Trek, I'd have to go Mal=Kirk, instead of Picard.

Ok how about wesly=kaylee
inocent mechanicly savy person both

river could be a crazy version of troy.

of course she isn't really crazy, more like Paul from Dune, if he got hit on the head with a rock really hard.

I think you should restrict it to TNG, since all the characters mentioned thus far besides Paris are TNG. Kaylee = Data and Wash = O'Brien in my book. All others as stated. While Data has the technical genius/innocence going on. O'Brien is obviously not a pilot, but he's very similar temperment to Wash and also the only married ST character (that I know of, because I saw 1 ep each of Voyager and Enterprise... ST is dead to me). Of course, they do more with Keiko/O'Brien in DS9, but he is a TNG character.

In that case, I think River should be some Q half-breed.

The problem with matching ST characters to Firefly ones is that ST centers on the bridge crew. Obviously you'd never have someone as unstable as River on your bridge. I think Q is the closest match. Remember, to match ST characters to Firefly you have to imagine the ST characters in the middle. They're normal (read "boring"). Firefly characters fan out in all the eccentric dimensions available.

Of course, it's a good sign that we can't establish a direct correlation between the characters in the two shows because they are quite different. Although I loved ST:TNG, characters were never their strong point. They're nearly cookie-cutters. Firefly does some of that (Jayne), but the characters had more depth to them after 11 eps than TNG did in almost the whole show. For instance, there was no sibling relationship in TNG, and no spouse until very far along (it barely counts). In Firefly, both have already had nearly an entire episode devoted to them (Safe and War Stories, respectively).

BTW, I just thought about something cool. You can set up a parallel between the last ep of Firefly aired in the US (so far), OiS, and the last episode in TNG, All Good Things. Before you call me crazy, or even after, think about it. Both involve an at least temporarily insane (or senile) person coordinating the actions of everyone else in order to save the ship. In both situations the insane person actually gains insights as a direct result of his or her condition. Both end with crew comeraderie and a game (Picard plays poker with the crew, River and Kaylee play jacks). And if you stretch things a bit and take the suggestion that River = Q (I know I was suggesting River = Picard earlier), the unbalanced and powerful person initially seen as a threat is accepted in the end.

I know it's more than a stretch , but it struck me.

VETERAN

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Wash and Paris are definitely a good parallel.

Jayne and Worf too.

The closest Captain to Mal has got to be Kirk.
River. I don't think there's a good parallel there, but Wesley might be closest. Problem with River is that nonoe ofthe Trek regualrs have suffered like she did. Maybe Barclay's the closest, being addicted to the holodeck an' all.

Kaylee has all the technical savy of the best Star Fleet engineers and looks better than Yeoman Rand. As far as parallel to a Star Trek regular, I'd have to give it to Geordi (but not on looks though), at least he's cheerful.

Inara does come across as a Betazoid at times. Sex and compatibliity of spirits and all that.

I know he's not on the ship but, what about Badger?
He strikes me as Ferrengi like.

Were there monkeys?

There was a Q half-breed, but thats not really what River is like. River doesn't act omnipotent. She shoots like Data would, Hears thoughts the way Troy would if she had more skill, and interacts with the crew like picard's fish would (which is to say not well, strangly if at all.)

I think comparing Firefly characters to Star Trek ones is doing Firefly an injustice.

Don't get me wrong, I love Star Trek, but I don't think Trek revolves around it's characters as much as Firefly. It's like in Trek, characters are used to push the story along, while in 'Fly it's more like the story is used to bring the characters to life. Know what I mean?

I on the other hand think it's a good pass time because it makes you really think about the characters in depth as you try to find a comon thread between them and ones on a very diffrent show. And thinking about the characters in depth is good becaus ethat was what the show was all about, the characters.
