I've attended the same showing at the same theater for 2 consecutive Fridays and it looked to me like my second was at least as well attended as the first.

It's exactly what I (and, I expect, Joss) had hoped. It bodes well for "sleeper hit" status.

Can't stop the signal...

Thanks for sharing. I know a bunch of newbies who are heading out to see it this weekend. Let's hope for another $10 mil. Or more.

I went to see the BDM at my local theatre on Tuesday, and again today. Well, they don't have ushers during the day, so I just walked to where I knew it would be.
Except it wasn't, it was down the hall.
Huh. I thought, and went on in, and lo and behold- Bigger theatre.
Brilliant.

what exactly do we need to get a sequel. I heard 80 mil. is that correct and is that worldwide and does that include dvd sales when that happens?

See I heard 50 million...anyone have the exact number or does it depend on DVD sales too? (and also, how do the Canadian numbers fit in? (and other non-U.S countries)

Ohhh...you guys don't even know how good it is to hear this stuff. Today I was giving the full-court press to everyone I knew. Mentioned to a girl that I was going to see a movie this weekend--you know the way this goes. She says, "Which one?" I says, "Sereni--" and damned if she cut me off before the "-ty" was out of my mouth: "I saw that with my fiancee the other day! It was incredible!" This a girl w/no experience in the 'verse. There's hope yet, Browncoats. We hold.

Wow, great news!
It would be amazing if we could just meet the same amnt we made last weekend...
I would rather see us make more and take the #1 spot,
but really, just staying in the top five,
and making another 10 million, would count as legs.

Maybe not legs for running...or even walking...
but at least legs for standing, and holding ground.

it is late, I should go to bed.

and I'm feeling bad that I was harsh w/the Firefly fans who aren't going to see Serenity

but I'll be buying my extra ticket for an empty seat when I go back to see the BDM a 5th time tomorrow!

I'm going to try to do my part, but my social calendar is solid for the whole weekend. To try to make up for it in some small way I went with my wife to see the BDM again last night (Thursday 10/6). Hope it helps - and who knows, I might manage to sneak a viewing in this weekend.

Last night's showing had a pretty small crowd - no more than a few dozen - but it was a *Thursday*, so I'm not too worried.

For those hoping for a sequel, I hope the theaters you visit held up a return audience better than the one I went to.

Last week for the 7:00 PM showing on Friday night there were probably between 160 and 200 in the theater. Tongight there were between 40 and 50.

Of those numbers hold up nation wide it does not bode well.

Wait a second... aren't you the guy telling us in every post how much you don't like the movie and how you wouldn't see it again?

The numbers for a sequel are $50 million domestic, $30 million international. Whether or not that includes DVD sales I'm not sure. Some fans say yes, others no, but I haven't yet seen an article or quote that says which.

I remember reading an internet article last Sunday that featured an interview with one of Universal's higher ups--sorry but I can't find the link. Anyway, the higher up said that Universal was very satisfied with the opening weekend gross even if it was lower than predicted. Universal also predicts huge returns on the DVD, international, and merchendising fronts.

Also, keep in mind that Serenity has been getting great reviews, including "Two Thumbs Up" from E&R.

In conclusion, don't give up hope yet, fellow Browncoats. Let's keep the word of mouth going and give the movie all the repeat business we can afford, and I'm sure we'll see our sequels.

Lower than the fans predicted, but still within Uni's predicted estimate. And I've heard at least one interview where a Uni exec says $80 million total gross is the goal, but they're flexible when it comes to greenlighting a sequel. I say, keep going to theaters and then buy up the DVDs like mad when they hit the stores. We're still flying and let's keep it that way.

If the movie gets $80 mil worldwide then Universal will say okay to a sequel. If it doesn't get 80 mil worldwide then Universal will wait to see what the DVD sales are like and then make a decision.

If the release of the first 9 minutes of the film online doesn't gives the movie the required boost in box office it needs, then the future of Serenity will depend on DVD sales.

UNCHARTEDOUTLAW

Well, I noticed on the main page that the numbers were already up 5% for Thursday! Thursday, people, not Friday! Friday's numbers aren't in yet...but it looks good.

Wife and I are seeing it again this evening! It'll be my third showing in three different theatres, so I'll have nothing to compare crowds to. But who cares! I'm gonna see Serenity again!

I've been running an analysis of box office numbers & there's signs of hope:

US box office
When you compare BDM numbers with the rest of the US top 10, it's actually on the way up as of 11 Oct.

Date, %#1, %Top10
30/09/05 87% 17.5%
01/10/05 56% 12.0%
02/10/05 67% 13.5%
03/10/05 68% 14.2%
04/10/05 59% 12.5%
05/10/05 58% 12.4%
06/10/05 58% 12.4%
07/10/05 38% 6.4%
08/10/05 32% 6.7%
09/10/05 31% 6.8%
10/10/05 26% 6.4%
11/10/05 45% 7.1%
12/10/05 42% 6.9% <-added 14/10/05

"%#1" is Serenity daily BO compared with #1 movie daily BO. This has jumped from 26% to 45%!

'%Top10" is DBM daily BO compared with total daily BO of top 10 movies. This has modest increase from 6.4% to 7.1%.

I don't think anything released the w/e in US will have huge BO so this rise may continue.

Worldwide BO
The rolling 7-day total worldwide box office is leveling off at ~$10M per week as of 10/10/05 (last WW figures available).

30/09/05 $4,169,873
01/10/05 $8,131,886
02/10/05 $10,748,278
03/10/05 $11,701,791
04/10/05 $12,623,329
05/10/05 $13,181,454
06/10/05 $13,789,420
07/10/05 $11,740,073
08/10/05 $10,631,900
09/10/05 $10,125,073
10/10/05 $10,625,003

It seems that new countries are making up for decline in US box office. At this rate BDM will break even after 4 weeks & make $80M in 8 weeks

Looks like we're beginning to hold!
