The Charlotte Observer ran an article about me and Jayne hats this morning.

Pic here:

And yes, I did get them to mention Firefly and Serenity. Someone's reading it, because I'm getting inquiries from places in Charlotte now. Hey, every little bit of publicity our show can get, eh?

Umm... that was meant to be a link to a pic, not a gigantic pic clogging up your screen. Any hints on how I can provide that as a link instead of as a ginormous jpg here? I'm afraid I may have broken a community rule of some type by putting that in the body of a post.

Awesome...I'll be placing an order soon! Question - does it come with the hay or without? Or may be disappearing and reappearing hay (wouldn't that be cool)? HAHAHA.

I'm so so glad to see more Tarheel Browncoats! I'm in Greensboro so I'm just up the road. I'm starting to learn how many Browncoats are in my adopted homestate of NC and couldn't be happier!

My hat off to you (so to speak) for more clever viral marketing for our little show and BDM!

There's a Yahoo group for NC Browncoats that's got some good activity - they plan activities from time to time, although I have yet to be able to come to one!

The hat does come with hay. I hadn't been advertising it, because it's such a great surprise when people open the package, but the cat's out of the bag.

Fortunately, I've got another surprise in the works. :)

Thanks so much for sharing this! What a great article and I LOVE your picture... you look so full of fun!

Congrats on the Jayne Hat cottage industry you're building. I'll bet Joss and Tim couldn't have guessed that the running hat joke in "The Message" would have inspired such a fan following for that orange head warmer!

Or maybe they could have guessed... they're probably well experienced with the quirkiness of their fan base!

Don't worry about any broken rules... folks include images in their posts quite often on this forum. The fact that typing a link to an image produces the image shows that the board is set up that way. Plus, I've seen WAY bigger jpegs posted... ones that really coulda used some downsizing.

It's cool to see the jpeg of the article included in your post, and it's not too big of an image at all. Just right.

That photo is so cool!

I love the different knit items shown. I knit too, but, since I am uncordinated, I use a knitting loom. I am working on adapting the Jayne Hat pattern for the loom and I am going to make one for my sister.

I also stopped by your website. The dinosaur hat is AWESOME!!!

MOTHRA

Good job! It makes me want to belt out the Hero of Canton song!

Sing with me, everyone! Let Fox hear it loud and clear!
-----------------------------------
Jayne!
The Man they call Jayne!

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'.
He saw the mudders' lament.
And he saw the Magistrate takin'
every dollar and leavin' five cents.
So he said: "You can't do that to my people."
said "You can't crush them under your heel."
So Jayne strapped on his hat
and in 5 seconds flat
stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal.

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Now here is what separates heroes
from common folk like you and I.
The man they call Jayne
he turned 'round his plane
and let that money hit sky.

He dropped it onto our houses
he dropped it into our yards.
The man they called Jayne
he stole away our pain
and headed out for the stars!

(Here we go!)

He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne...

"Mercy is the mark of a great man. (lightly stabs Atherton with the sword) Guess I'm just a good man. (stabs him again) Well, I'm all right."

Grew up in Wilmington and now live in Washington-25 minutes east of Greenville.

BTW I just checked the website and the BDM is still playing in Raleigh at the Carmike Blue Ridge 14 near the State Fairgrounds. Second run theater but a nice one (went last Friday).

My version of the hat done on a loom. It is WAY too big (I used the XL loom), and I made too many orange rows, but it still makes me laugh just looking at it. Not bad for an experiment. I added some rust colored mohair to the orange and red to give it a more homespun look.

I am going to put a Firefly DVD set inside it and send it to my sister for Christmas.

I love your loom hat! It's fantastic! A Jayne hat is all in the attitude of how you wear it. :)

As a result of the article, Jayne's mom called me on the phone on Friday.

She was a little old lady who had never heard of Firefly or Serenity, but she saw a picture of the hat in the newspaper and thought it would be just darling for her grandson. She wanted to order a kit so she could make one for him. We talked for a while, and she said she thought she'd rather do it in blues and purples...
"
... which I happen to have on hand, so that works right out.

I gave her a discount because she's in town and I wouldn't have to ship. It turns out I'll be shipping anyway, but I don't mind. I'm also going to size the pattern down for her, because her grandson is still a child.

I swear, it was just like talking to Jayne's mom. She just wanted something fun and nice to keep her baby warm in space.

Well, the "in space" part might have been implied.

OoooooOOooo...pretty colors! I think Jayne's mom will love working with it. The better the colors, the more dedicated I seem to be to finishing a project.

I get a lot of guff from my "real knitter" friends for using a loom. But hey, I know my limitations. They have tried to teach me "real" knitting several times and for some reason, it just doesn't seem to work. (I can network an entire computer system, design a catalog from scratch in no time flat, and even fix a car if I have to, but knitting with needles? ACK!)

I still have a little of the orange, yellow and red left. I am going to try one on the baby sized loom. My belly dance instructor has a cute little munchkin...and she has found SERENITY...so a Jayne hat would be perfect for him ;) (I swear, the kid looks exactly like the old Cupie dolls from the 40's. He is ADORABLE!)

I did make that kid's sized hat from the leftovers (red loom for you Knifty Knitter types). It turned out really cute! I brought it with me to class and "Jayne Junior" wore it the entire time. His parents got a good chuckle out of it.

Flawed? In what way? It IS homemade...and Jayne kind of slopped it on sideways when he first put it on (remember, he was still reading mom's letter.)
