Likes to mess with stuffs.

Not that many would understand, or even matters, but they weren't kidding about using Mandarin on Firefly. On that one video titled "Language Lessons", they were practicing it and it sounds like they need A LOT of practice.

One thing about using a real language on a SciFi series, if they can't speak it right, it's very noticeable.

Great stuff!

I'm reminded of the Shogun miniseries. The female lead, Yoko Shimada, spoke not a single word of English. She learned all her English dialog (a couple hours' worth if I remember correctly) phonetically!

I do wish they'd hire a more experienced webmaster. Those tiny embedded quicktime movies are unviewable unless you have a really ancient monitor. Here's a set of direct links. Open the QuickTime viewer directly. (On Windows, click Start/Programs/Quicktime/Quicktime Player. Then cancel the "Pleace upgrade!" spam window.) Then do File/Open URL in new player" and paste in one of the links. Then you get the movie in a window you can resize. Don't click on the links -- you'll just get another tiny embedded player.

Some of the funniest moments in TV SF, were the "American" accents used in British shows.

UFO and Commander Stryker come to mind.

I just wonder what Spike on Buffy sounds like to a real Englander.

Oh yeah. I used to spend way too much time watching syndicated Brit re-runs on KTEH, our local low-budget public station. Whenever an "American" character came on, I would grit my teeth. What really made it irritating is that I could never put my finger on what they were doing wrong!

He's probably pretty good. The show is popular in the UK, and I've heard no complaints. Then again, nobody from Scotland ever got around to having James Doohan killed, so may they just don't care!

Here's an interesting example of what you're talking about. Ever see The French Lieutenant's Woman? Meryl Streep (American) plays an American actress who's shooting a movie in which she plays an Englishwoman. Now, Streep is famous for her accents, but for once she blew it. Not with the English accent! But her American accent had that same irritating phoniness you hear in BBC hacks.

SHUGGIE

Spike's accent is OK - it's variable though. He'll go from being convincing to completely off and back again in the same sentence.
