Snagged this tidbit from gateworld.net; it shouldn't affect his plans for a movie, but I fully expect Stargate: Atlantis to be mediocre and uninspired (despite my love for the first few seasons of Stargate: SG1). On the plus side, he'd play a little bit of a militaryish character, so maybe we'd see a little Jayne in there.

"We're working on it. Nothing set in stone just yet. I'm actually trying convince them to hire me," Baldwin said. "He's a military guy. I would be one of the supporting ensemble guys. Not the lead guy. I'm a little past my prime. They want someone in there in their early 20s. You've got to launch a show with a 20-something guy. That's just the nature of the beast these days. So I hopefully could jump in and add my experience to any new show."

Baldwin plays S.G.C. Colonel Dave Dixon in the upcoming 2-parter "Heroes," airing next month on The Sci-Fi Channel. Should the actor be cast in Atlantis, it is not yet known whether Colonel Dixon would become a series regular or if Baldwin will play another role. The latter seems more likely, as the apparent commander of the new team carries the rank of major (story).

The 41-year-old, Chicago-born actor is known to science fiction fans as Jayne Cobb on FOX's short-lived Firefly, and for his recurring role as Knowle Rohrer in The X-Files.

As a 24 year old I can tell you I would watch a show with Adam in the lead long before I watched one with "some 20year old"...when are they going to get that audiences are smarter than they give us credit for??? Well, some of us anyway. Adam has more talent than all the "other Baldwins" put together...good luck with that, Adam.

Thanks for posting that Juggernaut.

I think that Adam has the ability and range to play the leader of an SGC team. Come on if Richard Dean Anderson can do it, Adam can easily pull it off. Don't get me wrong, RDA is a good actor, and I love his portrayal of Col. Jack O'Neill, but he is "past his prime" if a 20 something is supposed to be the lead.

Why would they want a 20 something for the lead anyway? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a 30-40 year old leading the team? Someone with experience and wisdom?

Anyway, I will keep my fingers crossed for Adam.

Yeah; from what I'm reading, he's in the running for two characters... the 20-something described above, and a late 30-ish male role, too. I believe both are military in nature.

Not that I have high hopes, Adam Baldwin or no Adam Baldwin. SG1 was an excellent show that, like The X-Files (another AB venture), has tried to leverage its popularity into an extra couple seasons to little avail.

I believe the producers have been trying to end the show for years... but SCIFI has been dragging it out.

I have high hopes for ATLANTIS, however and I would love to see Adam involved.

I admire your thinking. Please do send those sentiments to the Suits at all of the Networks.
Apparently, according to the Suits, most people watching (especially watching Fox) don't want to see anyone over the age of "some 20 year old".
(See what they've done to "24"? It's like CTU has become "The O.C."T.U.)

Thanks, Tallgrrl! I'm glad someone else (okay, a lot of people on here do) feel the same about Adam Baldwin. Yes, he's wonderful to look at, but more importantly he's a talented actor.

I find it extremely frustrating how those "suits" decide what we watch. They claim that viewership trends have changed...less males watching...younger viewers making the decisions. I personally don't believe that the numbers reflect OUR choices. IMHO, the networks changed first and that led to the decline in certain demographics.

When Fox first aired X-Files it wasn't a Number One ratings or media darling, and when it moved to Friday's at 9 (hmm, what other GREAT show got stuck in Friday's ratings limbo???) it still never sat at the top of the ratings. But they kept it because they realized it had a core audience. They didn't cancel it after the first 11 episodes. That's because up until a few years ago (which just happens to coincide with the reality tv boom)networks were willing to let a show grow. They moved it around if necessary, TRIED to make it work. Now they're just looking for the next BIG thing for a young audience. Basically, a show has to meet one of two requirements:
1. It must be geared toward the young adult/"trendy audience" (Hello Tru Calling)
2. And/or it must be a SMASH hit...which works better if it's targeting a young/trendy audience.

These days, a show has to topple the ratings to get locked in on network television. Especially on Fox. Look at Skin...right target audience, but it flopped the first few times and Fox pulled it. I never watched it myself, but had I wanted to, Fox never gave me the chance to get to know and relate to the show's character and plot.
The main point is that they are catering to the younger audience by following their ideology...trends and immediate gratification. This is supported by Tru Calling, which has weak ratings on a Thursday (which even against the NBC/CBS juggernauts is still a better slot than Fridays)and yet Fox keeps it because it was geared toward that younger (and mostly female)audience. Don't worry, like most trends aimed at the younger audience, Fox will drop it in a few years max. And they're aware of that...they like it that way. Because...
As we all know, (in my case because I'm just coming out of that age)teens/young adults have a very disposable attitude toward most things (fashion, electronics, favorite shows, movies, music, etc). The networks decided to follow that ideology themselves, thus alienating the older (and often male) audience. They don't look for substance. They look for a thin plot that can be easily wrapped up because they know it's not going to last more than a few seasons or so. It doesn't have to - by then they'll be on to their next new trend.
To wrap up this rant (which I hope makes SOME sense), Fox brought this wave of reality garbage and addiction to trends and ratings on themselves, and managed to destroy their reputation of airing risky and original television in the process. And their original audience (those watching the first few years of the Simpson, Futurama, Family Guy, Firefly, X-Files, Keen Eddie) are the ones who suffer for it. For now, I think I'll stick to FX, Bravo and the rest of the cable channels who are still willing to put quality over quantity.
