Ruttin' BIG FF DVD to Troops Update!!

Greetings, Salutations & Hysterics! I have been given permission to publicly mention what we have been up to! But first....

Major thanks to the FARSCAPERS (love ya Twich & Mickie!), who GAVE us their Navy connection! (No 'fan group' competetiveness on the part of Farscapers WHATSOEVER! Just good folks, who want to help our men & women in uniform & promote ALL good entertainment.) Generous Spirits are a blessing to the world!

And major thanks to RJROBERSON, who got us thinking better & bigger!

*********************************************************************
NOW...the news! We are IN NEGOTIATIONS (not a done deal just yet) with Navy MWR (Morale, Welfare & Recreation) to place 200 Firefly DVD sets directly ABOARD all Navy ships with viewing capabilities and with the 5th Fleet in Bahrain!! (The 5th Fleet runs the on-shore R&R facility in Bahrain. It is visited by sailors deployed in that region of the world.) Is that awesome or what?!

This news needs to stay here & at the prosero forum for the time being. PLEASE! Don't contact any sailors & spread this until it is finalized! Plus, Navy MWR should be the first to announce this to all Navy personnel, once the deal is final. They are doing a great deal to make this happen. SHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
*********************************************************************

Ramifications: This means making the Navy, & not the USO, our first target. This is not what we originally announced, so we are hoping all you contributors are OK with this change. When RJ first made the suggestion to "Go Navy", all replies to his idea were extremely positive, so hopefully everyone sees the benefits. If not, here are some of them:

1) The Navy will reach far more "troops" than the USO centers can. Plus they will be sent first to the ships in combat zones & to the 5th Fleet. That means sailors on active duty in combat zones will see Firefly!

2) Deployed sailors are a captive audience. They've got nowhere to go during their downtime. They will really appreciate the outstanding entertainment that is Firefly, onboard their vessels & during R&R.(Our Navy guy did two stints in the Gulf War. He told me that a sailor finding a 6 pak of Diet Coke in the fridge at an the R&R center can cause unbelievable amounts of joy. He said (paraphrasing, but it's close), "This is a really big deal. You can't imagine what this will mean to the sailors over there.")

3) "Ships" includes submarines. I have it on good authority **cough**affablechap**cough** that Joss had a submarine in mind when he created Serenity. When Mal says "boat" that's submarine lingo, according to the Navy guy. (I suppose Joss knew that. Me? Not so much.)

4) Our connection is asking for specific info for the press release that they will do. (Forgot to confirm, but I'm guessing he meant Navy press.) We have yet to get a quote from the USO for our press release, so I doubt if they will doing one on their own.

Again, we have not finalized this deal quite yet. There are some legal hoops to jump through first. But, we wanted to announce this as soon as we could & before the fundraising extension ends, since this is highly motivating news!

Also, Kristen posted the financial update today. We are at $6400!! Enough to cover the Navy & more! We will continue to press the USO for all the necessary info to proceed with our donation to them.

KEEP FLYIN' SERENITY!! And MANY THANKS to all of you. You know who you are!!

That's just awesome!

I can't decide whether to commend the Firefly community for being so generous or for being so sneaky and determined in their goal to prove what morons FOX are.

Either way, Browncoats are an awesome bunch of people. Here's hoping we have a whole new generation soon.

This is really good news. Hopefully the guys at FOX are listening to this. Maybe this will be the push universal needs to make the movie, and the swift kick in the head FOX needs to make the music CD (and bring back the show...fingers crossed)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

This is a really great idea! Helping to keep up troop morale and getting Firefly out to more potential fans helps everyone.

Is this going to be limited to "Ships" only, or would it be possible to inclued the various Navel Bases?

SUBMARINEGUY

As a Navy sailor who was turned on to Firefly by the DVDs sent to our submarine by the Navy MWR, I want to thank you all. Not sure how much converting you will do, but it worked on me and at least another half dozen on my boat (of about 150). The problem is this... the MWR will not announce anything to us. I know this because one, they didnt, two, I'm a Navy sailor and they never have in the past for much of anything. Not that they arent a good program to be using to get to us, mind you. They are just too busy with all their programs to make it known to us why we are getting the DVD sets. My recommendation is this, you guys need to let us sailors know why we are getting them and who has sent them to us. You have raised a lot of money and you deserve more credit. If you visit browncoats.org and see my first post ever on a board, you will understand that your message may be getting to us, but the complete understanding of why (which would have prompted me to turn more of the guys on the boat on to the show) has been lost on us. Anyway, thanks for turning me on to the show which made me buy my own copy of the series set and movie.

if its not up we should try and get it going again. And why just navy? I think MArines and air force and army, and even hell some of the reserves would get this verse a lot more.

If you play Nationstates.net check out the region Firefly.

Deployed troops on the ground are somewhat less likely to have facilities to watch movies, nor are they likely to have the time. Marines and soldiers in combat zones spend a whole lot of time maintaining their equipment and weapons, and they sleep more on their downtime than sailors do.

Most Navy ships have their own version of "Cable" piped into TVs all over the ship, (on mine, nearly every shop and lounge had one) some channels show regular TV shows, others show nothing but movies.

As a former navy SF fan, I can predict that there will be more than a few converts. Sailors are hungry for entertainment, and they like action, and, they see a lot of movies on shore, and many of them (the single ones) have disposable income for entertainment and electronics. A witty SF show should do well there. As far as the nautical lingo goes, Mal isn't as traditional as, say, Star Trek, which is most likely to separate itself as another spacecraft-centered SF show. Mal calls the galley a kitchen and dining area, for example, and I don't recall hearing port and starboard thrown around. I think calling it a kitchen is a good choice, reflecting the ranch-house atmosphere of the place. Plus, he's former army, and you hear that lingo used more, mixed in with Chinese and western jargon. Dogmatic adherence to nautical jargon would be a little too militaristic. "Boat" is expressly used by by submariners to separate their sort of craft from surface vessels. And we all know Serenity is different.

I don't know bout those in combat zones, but I have a friend in the reserves who says its boring where he is. They have tv and stuff but nothing good to watch and nothing much to do all day. IS there any way we could get DVD's to those kinds of peeps?

If you play Nationstates.net check out the region Firefly.

This is of the shiny, and I'd love if they can get this cemented. Wherever there is a croup of people who can and will be interested in Firefly, they should be exposed!! Happy!

May not be smart, and it may not please you, but you're definitely gonna see what I have to say.

As an active duty sailor I can say this is great news, for the sailors who will benefit from this and the on going effort to expose FIREFLY to as many people as possible. A veteran of too many cruises I care to count, I can say when a sailor finds new material available to watch he/she will latch on to it and spread the word. I'm impressed by the effort of this group in promoting such a fantastic product.
