About a week ago... a lot of fuss was created in the Philippines over a single line from the show "Desperate Housewives". The scene involved the lovely Teri Hatcher and our very own Captain. A bunch of publicity hungry Filipino politicians appeared on TV denouncing ABC , Desperate Housewives producers, and writers about what I think was a harmless yet insensitive comment about Filipino doctors.
Teri Hatcher's character was talking to our Cap and she said something about wanting to see his credentials / diploma as a doctor just to make sure that he didn't graduate from " some medical
university" in the Philippines. The line was said in a light hearted manner and I dont think it was meant to insult Filipinos in general. I've been in this country for about 8 years now and not once have I ever felt discriminated because of my color AND in certain areas of California... We are the majority so I think the
politicians in my home land just over-reacted and some may have even done it intentionally just to be on TV and say something patriotic.
Well... that is their prerogative. As for me... All is well. Heck! All is better! Every time they showed the clip from the show... our Cap is getting some deserved air time on TV and I'm talking CNN and stuf (even our very own TV Patrol
World). I'm hoping that Mal's charm will win a few more or maybe a lot more new browncoats because of that extra air time. It only took me a few seconds of Serenity and the primary buffer panel to get on board. It just might get us a few more browncoats. Enough to finally make it ... OUR TURN.

Hallo kababayan! Haha. I've been here a few weeks and I was hoping to run into a fellow Pinoy (well, Pinay actually but it's shiny.) I'm in the homeland, btw, so I actually got a full brunt of what you're talking about.

IMHO, the DH thing was a valid slight to being Filipino (ain't it coincidental that DH can both mean Desperate Housewives and Domestic Helper, which is also a bit derogatory for Pinoys?). We have genius manpower when it comes to healthcare. So implying that the doctor's diploma was subpar because he may have graduated from a med school in the Philippines is very unfounded and insulting.

Unfortunately, an extremely valid point was sullied by these power-hungry politicians who have their heads so far up their pi-gu it creates the prominent bloat on their stomachs. Don't mind them, they never know what they're saying.

Anyway, I did a double-take when I saw the controversial clip. I knew that the Cap'n was in Desperate Housewives, but I didn't know it was that Desperate Housewives. (I don't watch it, don't look me!^^) I would be very glad if Nathan Fillion did study in the Philippines. He should be so lucky. (as I will be too!)

I think that the writer of that episode just screwed up. He could have used many other countries in a comical, yet non-offensive way....such as medical degree from N. Korea, or Teheran University, etc. I know and work with some people from the Phillipines....they have a lot of pride, and generally not the best senses of humor when it comes to their heritage.

The writer got lazy.....I only watched the show 'cause our Captain was in it...I found the show totally stupid & boring & retarded....NOT FUNNY... If that's what passes for popular TV these days, I'm glad I stick to my Movie & Sci Fi TV DVD sets.

Oh my! It's great to know that there's pinoy or shall I say... pinay browncoats out there. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I have been lurking on this site for about 2 years now although I just stay incognito most of the time. It's just my way (smile).
I hope you're enjoying your stay in PI right now. It's probably raining and stuff. I can just imagine how much air time our politicians got from trying to crucify DH. Anything to try and cover up the real issus, right?
Anyway.. I'm rambling now. Thanks for the response. Hope you continue to enjoy your stay there. Are you on vacation or something like that?
Take care.... stay shiny.... and yeah... hope to bump into you somewhere in this verse sometime soon.

Yup! That about sums up the way I feel about TV now a days. Well.... there's NCIS, Battlestar Galactica and Diry Jobs with Mike Rowe so I guess it's not at all bad. Besides... Once you've had "the firefly experience".... everything else kinda sucks.
As for the poor writer for Desperate Housewives... I hope he doesn't get fired for that one little mistake. Sure... it got blown out of proportion but we all make mistakes. Even Mal makes mistakes... sometimes.

Actually, I live here. Haven't ever been on a plane and I've already promised to myself that I will mutter "Hang on, travelers." to myself the first time I get on one.^^ Though I doubt it would be anytime soon. So far I haven't had the inclination to leave the Philippines.^^

Totally agree. Popular TV nowadays feel a bit shallow and unintelligent, it's insulting. And when something unique and engaging comes our way, they get cancelled. That seem right to you?^^

I also agree on Filipinos being a mite too sensitive when it comes to our heritage. I guess it comes from always defending your nationality and proving that you're proud of your country. Sadly, not a lot of Filipinos are proud that they are Filipinos, which is stupid because one should always be proud of being him/herself.

I know the Filipinos fought courageously against the Japanese in WWII, and even after the country was occupied, the resistance kept fighting. When MacArthur left the Philippines after the defeats at Guadalcanal & Corregidor, Filipinos were left to the mercy ( none given ) of the Japanese savages.....their spirit never capitulated. That should be a source of pride for all Filipinos, and people from all over the world should learn the lessons of that horrible era. So...for some dope-smoking Hollywood writer/freak punk to take a cheap shot at the Phillipines only shows the world how utterly clueless he and the producers are.

Aww... thanks for that. That's very heartwarming.^^ Filipinos truly have a lot of things to be proud of and I just hope more of our kababayans will learn of that.
