well, the article adds nothin - but the concept is sound... direct to dvd 'movies' allows Universal to bend the licensing clause... and gives us (hopefully) another shiny dvd set:)

Hell, everyone has been doing it for ages now! and audio too! etc etc -

rant, gurgle...

Might actually be better than a theatrical release, as there won't be the limitation of having to jam the whole lot into a two-and-a-half hour action romp. It could be split into several parts over more than one disc, giving more time for that subtle character stuff that we love from the series...

We have done the impossible before haven't we? We can do it again! I will keep my hope alive and that of my fellow Browncoats while I do my own dance of joy at the fact that no one has said it is not ever going to happen.

I am going to keep on holding till Mal gets back. Right there alongside all of you.

Once you've been in Serenity you never leave. You find a way to live in it.

and notice that it is ALAN (aka WASH) who has been mentioning this possibility.... I think that bodes well for some in between story with Book and Wash still prominently there... sweeter still!

Well, folks, here's how I see it. We gotta keep the signal strong and we gotta make it go further. In other words we gotta keep buzzin'! In whatever way, we have to generate enough buzz to convince 'Versal and TPTB that the interest in this story is powerful and widespread enough to be a worthwhile venture. It's been done once, it can be done again, and YOU, my friends, are all amongst them as made it happen.

So let me urge you now to make it happen again.

I would consider any film production a positive developement. Once this starts, the continued expansion of browncoats may convince them to upgrade their decision.

Gorramit, it's great to hear some fellow believers!

Y'know, here and there I run into people who are afraid to look foolish, so they hem and haw and hedge their bets and talk about what a longshot a sequel is.

I just want to smack 'em.

I'd rather look like an idiot and believe. If we don't believe, if we don't wish like fools, we'll never get what we want. We'll see it when we believe it.

I'd rather do something right than something smart.

Keep believing!

Much as I love Jewel, let's not get all depressed, here. This is what she said:

"Okay, okay, okay: Lets address these Serenity 2 rumors before anything else. I have no idea what you people are talking about! Seems to me someone (with a name that starts with A and ends in LAN) said something in an interview that was misconstrued as the sequel being greenlit, which is not the case at the moment. I will never say it will never happen, because that's just blasphemy in my opinion, but it's not happening at the moment… no matter what you read on the internet. You know better than to believe everything you read, anyway! "

No one, not even the most ridiculously optimistic, has ever said they thought what Alan meant was that Universal (or, anyone else) had greenlighted a sequel.

Pretty much, Jewel's NOT Joss.

So, I'm still waiting to hear from HIM about the rumors about Universal /being interested in/ a sequel, as expressed by Alan in the original interview.

Hang in there, folks. This is far from over.

I've run into two posts by you- this one here and one over at serenitymovie.net that made me "Whoop!" It's such a pleasure to run into someone with hope and that fighting spirit.

There are some folks who are looked up to who have become so pessimistic that to go where they post is bad for my Browncoat soul. This is a whole helluva lot more like how I'm a thinkin'!

It always amazes me that fans of a story about a man who regains his faith manage to lose theirs so easily.

From the time we were kids, we've all thought of scifi as a fringe phenomenon, something we like because we're weird, something the normals don't know about . . .

Wake up and smell the coffee. That has changed. Star Trek and Star Wars are mainstream now. ComicCon gets coverage in the mainstream press and attention from the mainstream tv/film industry. Several of the most popular shows on mainstream TV today are about superheroes and people trapped in science fiction situations. Subjects that used to be relegated to comic books--even obscure comics like the X-Men--are now major motion pictures.

There will come a time when everyone in our culture will have heard of Firefly, when Mal and Jayne will be as recognizable as Kirk and Spock or Han Solo and Chewbacca. Not everyone will be a Browncoat then, anymore than everyone is now a Trekkie; but everyone will know what a Browncoat is.

But we fans of quality scifi go on thinking that we're a weird fringe group that is just going to get beaten down.

Heck, even if we are, I'm still going to keep believing in a trilogy.

Everyone grieves in different ways. And loves in different ways, too. Some folks love Firefly so much, that letting go of hope for more is nothing short of committing a mortal sin. Others love Firefly so much, that, like Mal, they can't keep holding out for a train don't come. Now, that don't make Mal any more of a 'traitor' than any Browncoat who, at long last, chooses to shield his own dear and fluffy soul against a sea of squashed hopes. Also, Mal has not truly given up all hope for help from on High; it's more like he stopped actively investing in said hope -- to safeguard his own soul from having to deal with constant disappointment. I, my own self, often find myself in that spot, too. And I find nothing so dishonorable 'bout that. A year from now, I'd hate having to scrape hope, yet again, from under the heel of this or that Universal Executive.

I know it's kinda of standard fansite thingy here, even when half in jest, to clobber on whoseoever casts but a shadow of a doubt. And it is, on occasion, hilarious. But, in earnest... Hope is orphaned when not begotten by a desperate parent. I mean to say, addressing fears and doubts really are integral to understanding hope. Make fears and doubts taboo, and ere long no one will even know any more WHY a need for hope exists. Among genuine fears and doubts I also count the question whether a thing, when it can be done, also always SHOULD be done, per se. You mention Star Wars. I dunno your age, but I grew up with the original trilogy, and saw it get raped with the prequels. Young folks, they don't even notice: as long as it moves, it's fine with them. A man comes up against that kind of travesty, the only way to deal with it, I suspect, is to ask himself, at least once, whether "Serenity II: The Search for More Money" is such a good idea. Losing faith don't play into that.

Is there an understanding between us?

I understand you, Asarian, and there are things I have chosen to give up faith in. A quality Serenity sequel is not one of them--I haven't seen any reason to give up hope on that. To tell the truth, I keep seeing reasons to have more hope.

Okay, as long as we're discussing it, let me throw in that faith must be backed up by action, so I'm urging everyone to join in the Wavecard Campaign. Here's the info:

It was first proposed over on The Signal forum:

http://fireflydvd.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3794

Basically, the idea is quite simple. Quantum Mechanix sells packs of really shiny 'Verse-themed postcards. If you haven't seen 'em, check 'em out. They're pretty and funny:

http://www.quantummechanix.com/Blue%20Sun%20Travel%20Wavecards.html

So the plan is to order sets of these cards, write a note asking (politely) for Serenity sequel on each one, and send them to Universal at this address:

Universal Pictures
100 Universal City Plaza
Universal City, CA 91608
Attn: Donna Langley
and
Attn: Jon Gordon

(BTW, there's some uncertainty on The Signal forum about the attn names, so if anyone has more up to date info, please don't keep it to yourself. In any case, we know it's the right address, and the postcards are sure to get someone's attention.)

Why is this letter writing campaign different from those of the past?

First off, timing. We know Universal is on the verge of greenlighting the Big Damn Sequel.

Second off, Universal Licensed Products. In the film industry, money talks, so by sending these wavecards, which are official licensed products, we're putting money in Universal's pocket and underscoring the potential for lots more profit.

Third, this time, we're all behind it. Only you can make sure that we do the impossible—again. When all the Browncoats stand united, there's not a power in the 'Verse that can stop us.

Let's make it happen, folks,

Cedric

Though I wouldn't mind a sequel to Serenity, frankly it would be awesome, however I would prefer that Season 2 of Firefly get made instead. But if they do both then bow-chicka-bow-wow!

The problem with a second series is that FOX hold the rights to Firefly. Even if they don't order new episodes, they can still broadcast the repeats. In order for a Firefly Season 2 to be made, Joss and the team would have to not only re-acquire the rights to the show, but find somene else willing to pick it up. It wouldn't be too difficult given the fan support, but it would still take some work.

not true from what i gather. fux holds the tv rights to FireFly (although Universal may have it now given the HD showings) BUT as i've said - Universal hold the rights to Serenity - and any future movies... Feature length 'tv - movies' (ie a six part series that can basically be sold for the dvd set it would constitute) would evade the licensing fox issue. They could even opt for limited cinematic release in overseas territory.
So celebrate FireFly and look forward to Serenity.

Sorry, I mis-interpreted the post as meaning a full-time return as a television series the way it was originally intended, not as telemovies.
