Hello everyone,

good news: we finally made it to German TV !

RTL, the TV station that holds the rights for FIREFLY and SERENITY is showing the movie during his summer movies campaign on 19.07.08 at 22h.

YEAH, maybe all those emails, calls and faxes over the years helped.

Good stuff, but too bad it'll be dubbed in German. If there's one thing Germans can't do, it's proper dubbing.

Hi there,

you are so right, german dubbings are absolutely horrible !

There is only one movie that has a better german dubbing than the original, thats Lord of the Rings.

Fantastic choices of voices, they fit so perfect to the characters and they used a form of very oldfashioned more traditional german language, its very poetic and just beautiful. The old german language is very similar to Tolkien´s work, I think thats why.

I´m really glad about the fact that Serenity has a chance now to be seen by a wider audience over here.

Maybe there is a chance also for Firefly to be shown on this station as well. I don´t give up. Ive send them so many mails over the years and maybe it helped to get the movie shown.

Keep fingers crossed.

Take good care and enjoy your day

Beste

Is this a cable network...cause Serenity has only been shown on pay-extra cable channels like HBO, Showtime and such in the USA. Not a broadcast channel yet. The normal cable channel USA has bought rights to it but hasn't shown it yet.

Hi there,

yes, RTL its cable, a big station, but nearly all people have it, as most households have it already added to your rent automatically.

Its the first time they show it over here in germany, they hold the rights for FIREFLY as well, which was also never shown here.
Keep fingers crossed that a lot of people will tune in.

Cheers

Yeah, Tolkein made no secret of his "Rings" drawing from the same basic sources as Wagners. Tolkein probably would have loved to hear the German dubbed version, especially using the old dialect. Very period and all that.

Germans have always been big fans of American Westerns. Don't they do a good job dubbing those? Did any of Karl Mays German language originals get made into movies?

(note for my fellow Americans, Karl May wrote a series of German language Westerns before WW I, that were really popular in Germany, but never made it to the US in translation, although some were published in the UK.)

To be honest, i have ever been a great fan of Western at all, until I discovered Firefly, funny enough... but thats a different approach to the genre and if it would not have the sci-fi aspect, don´t know if I have would have touched it at all.

A lot of Karl May´s stories have been transferred into movies troughout the years, they were all produced over here shot in former Jugoslavia, as they had beautiful landscapaes. ALl of them very sucessfull here, in cinemas and on TV. They became classics. Pierre Price played Winnetou and Bruce Boxleitner played Old SHatterhand for example.

But I´m not sure, if they ever made oversees, but the are known in most european contries.

Congratulations emmapeel! I'm sure the letters you sent had some impact.

I've only sent the one email to the two national broadcasters in Britain and Ireland, maybe I should send more.

not lazy just don't care (about anything but Firefly)

I didn't realize that this was an issue - I don't have cable or any sort of reception for local stations, so I've pretty much written non dvd based telivision out of my life. Stations own the rights to Serenity but won't play it? Why is that? I thought Serenity did pretty well at the box office, is that wrong? Who do we have to write to get it shown?

Yeah, the Karl May movies were great, although some of them didn't age too well. My favourite is "Schatz im Silbersee", but I haven't watched them since I was a kid, so maybe I'd enjoy another one more these days.

As I mentioned, it's been a while since I saw them, but I'm sure Old Shatterhand was played by Lex Barker!

Congratulations, emmapeel/Beate!!
Serenity finally made it to German TV after how many years of begging and pleading? Two, three?
Let's hope they have the good sense to follow up with a proper showing of Firefly, and plenty of publicity to bring the viewers to the show!

Big problem with getting Firefly broadcast in Germany is the cost of dubbing. That's 9.5 hours of people talking. Then again, if you pitch Firefly as an allegory for the struggel of independents against the growing tyranny of the "Alliance" in Brussles, it might get more traction. Media people love controversy (even if, to paraphrase Book, they don't "believe in anything.")

Hi there,

the dubbing is already done some years ago, as the series is available on DVD (Box-Set) with german dubbing.

That makes it even more stupid not to show it.

Maybe if enough people see Serenity we have a better chance.

Ciao

Beate

Hey,

you are right, it was Lex Barker, I mixed it up. Yes I liked them movie as well, once in a while we still get to see them over here, nowadays they look a bit oldfashioned but remind one of their childhood ;))

enjoy your sunday

Yeah, but that dubbing sucks. Of course, something is better than nothing. Or is it?

yes, dubbing sucks big time, the humour and the irony doesn´t come across at all, but what can you do, thats how it is over here.

German audiences are so used to dubbing that they maybe don´t even recognize, as the majority doesn´t speak that good english. Most people understand it, but not so well.

Because of those horrible dubbings of TV series and movies I stopped watching german tv (besides football and the news) over a year ago and watch only original tv series and movies. Besides owning a lot of DVD´s, there are so many pages on the net, that actually give me the chance to watch everthing I want, whenever I want. Its a big relief, specially since a lot of good tv series don´t even make it to Germany, like Dexter, Pushing Daisies, Extras, Black Books, Arrested Development, Dirt, Mad Men, How i met your mother and more.

People who live in the Uk or US can be sooo lucky about their tv programms, they have a big number of interesting tv series to choose from ours, over here, its tv wasteland, boring, mediocre, pathetic and so not sexy at all.

Although some the best shows get cancelled by big US tv stations once in a while, we all had this sad exerience with Firefly, at least you have the chance to watch other series.

We can be happy to have House and Weeds with an o.k. dubbing and Queer as Folk with a dubbing that destroyed the series completely.

From this side of the pond, that looks like a great opportunity for someone to do better dubs, gain a bigger audience and have more eyeballs to rent. The ability is there, as was heard with the LOTR dub. Didn't any of the showbiz suits over there pick up on that?
