Gonna try, again, to catch a shuttle launch. Tried twice, and am 0-2. Third time.......

Are you going to the launch or are you in
the area and planning to be out with a scope
or binocs?

Easier to just be downrange and catch it flying over.

Oh, I won't have tickets to BE at the launch proper, I'll just cruise down there and hope to find a decent spot near by to scope it out. I wanna hopefully feel those engines throttle up. I'd likely be on the northern side of the Cape, since I'll probably be staying in Daytona.

Envy, envy, envy.
Heh.

Would love to see a shuttle once...

Where we are we can enjoy all manner of
launches from VAFB, including feeling
that rummmmmmmmble, but it's hard to get
pre-announcements, then they're postponed,
etc. Not to mention being scheduled for
wee, cold hours.

We especially love evening launches which
can be seen up and down the Coast, prompting
weird calls to radio programs. "No, it's
huge and they are really coming to get us
this time!"

Yes, indeedy.
I missed last night's little party --
it was at 1:00AM and I was all worn out
from the election, catching some ZZZZZs.

fillygirl,

I've been there a few times myself, one of
the best being not officially "there" but on
an Amtrak train northbound, sent to a siding
directly to the ocean side of one of the big
launch pads while we waited for a southbound
train to come past. Beautiful clear day, blue
sky, and the sun setting slowly as the lights
came on and a lot of personnel stood in the
big structure and watched us watching them...

One year we were just leaving our polling place
after voting when a big, flaming rocket zoomed
out toward the Pacific Test Range. Lots of voters
stood around, observing.
"Your tax dollars at work," I said, and we
moseyed on home.

Time to cross fingers, toes, anything cross-able
that the weather doesn't let us down. News
tonight said there was a possibility a front
was going to come through and delay the launch.

Pardon the delay, but heck yeah!! It was glorious! The full moon was rising after dark , and was a spectacular back drop to a perfect launch. Pics probably won't show much, but if they do, I'll be sure to post. ( kinda hard to take pics when your eyes are a bit watery )

There were 1000's of folks where i was, all parked and tailgating like some huge football game was about to commence. Met a older guy who had flown down from Seattle, and was gonna drive down to the NASCAR race , down in Homestead, on Sunday. It's so amazing, folks from all over , come to watch this amazing display of power over nature.

Oh, yeah. I know about the watery eyes getting
in the way of the photography. Heh.
We'd all love to see those pics if they turn out
even halfway good.

Love the man who flew from Seattle!

Would that the stock market would go up many
hundreds of points all at once so we can
finance a few trips like that (plus 2009
Firefly Cruise!!1!) but not too sure wishing
will get us there. Needs to be ~14K Dow again...

That's fantastic! I've always wanted to see a shuttle launch and I don't know if I'll get a chance before it's too late. I'm so glad you got to see it! Please post any of the pix that came out.

Want to share this!
ISS is turning 10 years old (unbelieveable, hunh?) and boston globe put together a set of photos here:
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/11/the_international_space_stati
o.html

They aren't in chronological order, so are a little confusing at first.
Many stunning images.
#23 has yellow exhaust
#29 is "Well, here I am" until you discover
it's really the equivalent of a Blue Sun coffee can rigged up specially.
#5 is going to be my wallpaper for a while -- every time I look at it I can hear the scrape and twang of a Firefly sound track. There is the ship, docked, and somewhere inside are Amnon and his post office, Jayne shopping for ammo, River and her ice-planet...try it for yourself.
