FOX has ordered 2 more episodes of 'Firefly' from the 3 scripts previously ordered. Looks like FOX is going to take another look at Firefly's pickup in another month or so.

This is torture. It's better than the series being cancelled, but why doesn't Fox just make a decision. I want this show to survive, but this is crazy. What does commissioning two more episodes get them? Unless Fox makes the decision to move Firefly out of its graveyard time slot, I don't think the ratings are going to improve.

I have no understanding of how television production works, so if someone understands the logic of Fox's decision to order two more episodes, please clue me in - I'm going nuts trying to make some sense of this!!

I think FOX doesn't really know what they want to do with Firefly yet, and this is just a way to delay the decision.

ARRRRG! I can't stand it! Is Fox TRYING to kill off the fan's they have with all this suspense?

In a way, I almost think the not knowing is worse than it being cancelled. If it's cancelled, I can just cry for weeks... but the not knowing is driving me up the wall!

I'd offer to sell fox my soul for Firefly... but I sold my soul for a dime last year... and I'm not entirely sure who has it now

It buys FOX some time. What they don't want to do is to have production stop for the series. Once that happens, it becomes a scheduling nightmare to get the rest of the season produced if FOX decides to pick up the rest of the season.

The additional episodes will also allow FOX to better guage the rating trend for the series. Again, while the ratings may not have fallen with the past few episodes, they haven't been stellar either in terms of showing any kind of upward trend that 'Firefly' is picking up new viewers.

My bet is FOX is hoping to see a 'John Doe' in 'Firefly.'

From a pure business standpoint, the logical thing for Fox to do is cancel the show, so the fact they ordered any more episodes at all can only be a good thing.

There is a "hey you're missing a great show" buzz about Firefly. Critics who 'ho-hummed' it (or out right panned it) are now writing positive reviews/blurbs about specific episodes. Most recent case in point Robert Bianco of USA Today. Fox may be waiting around to see if this buzz goes anywhere.

I also believe that the "save Firefly" campaign is helping keep the show around by demonstrating to Fox that more people are watching Firefly than the pontiffic Nielsons let on.

All this means is that we the fans have to keep up the pressure AND the buzz ourselves until the show gets over the hump in Fox's mind.

I do encourage Fox to play Firefly repeats instead of pre-empting the program. This way people can catch up with the stories and get more familiar with the characters.

We already suspect almost any night of the week would be better for the show, so I won't go into that.

But how about this... if Fox won't commit to fully moving Firefly to a better prime time slot, why not experiment by having an encore showing of it 6PM Sundays just before Futurama? WB is experimenting with such encore showcases starting every Sunday at 5PM (they call it 'Big Sunday' I believe...) perhaps they're on to something.

Encore showcases (yes I'm aware) are reserved for popular shows --Fox even does it with 24. But my contention has always been this show will build itself into a popular show if allowed to show itself off outside of the Friday graveyard.

Help me out; what's the tally?

FOX ordered three scripts... and two episodes? If memory serves, ordering a script is cheap, and electing to roll production on it is expensive, and the two are different things.

So what ARE we getting now? (How many episodes, how many scripts... is there even a difference?)

Still, though; it is good, if wearisome news.

One way to look at it is that of the 3 new scripts ordered, 2 of them are being produced. That'll bring the total number of episodes to 15.

Not a bad idea, mattro. Even if it wasn't on the same channel... There's a station in the 50's (I want to say TNT, but I'm not sure) That plays Charmed on Tuesday evenings at 10pm. Right after a couple of episodes of Law & Order (talk about a mis-matched pair...) Anyway, those are usually the same episodes that the WB plays on Sunday nights.

Speaking of the couple weeks off... what ARE they putting in it's place, if not reruns?

Okay.. this is better than nothing, but it's still not great. That means that we still need to be loyal obsessive sci-fi fans. Keep writing letters. Keep getting other people to write letters. Throw a party to get people into it. Call a local radio station and ask if they'll mention the show. Hell, put an add in the paper! As soon as my play is over, I'm going to have a big party at school. I'm going to show OUt of Gas in the chorus room (big space). I'm gonna put up signs inviting students and teachers (i already know a few people who will come.. i'm hoping to get more) I'm gonna bring popcorn, even. I'll do anything to make this show popular! you guys need to do the same!

I can't live without firefly!

Probably not.. but i'll explain anyway. See, it's all very straight forward! ya know how Kaylee told Inara to "have good sex" as a way of saying goodbye? Well... we use that. ANd I went to Melee's play a couple nights ago, and we got all hyperactive and Firefly obsessed because we rarely see eachother to talk about it. So I loaned her my tapes, and her mother was dragging her away from me, and she told me to have good sex as a way of saying goodbye. it freaked her mommy out. hehe

and the shoes.. Melee named her shoes Zoe and Wash and she told me that they were asleep together under a blanket.

All make sense now? I'm sure

The count:
2 eps made up the pilot
11 additional order
=13 that was initially ordered.
Then 3 more scripts were picked up, followed by another three, = 6.
Now 2 more eps have been ordered.
13 + 2 = 15 episodes
6 - 2 = 4 scripts left unproduced, 6 ahve been ordered.
3 episodes not ordered yet

If you know anyone that can help my screenwriting career, please help! And yes, I am self-advertising here. Hehehe, me such a little devil.

Okay, here's the deal.

The last of the original 13 epidsodes is finished production tomorrow, which means the two FOX ordered today will start production on Wednesday. Now, shows like this typically take about 9 shooting days to complete which means that FOX has bought itself about 3 weeks.

If you look at FOX's air schedule for the next couple of weeks you'll notice that Firefly has two weeks off due to movies (Happy Gilmore and The Brady Bunch Goes To Hell or something). Therefor, FOX can't be looking at how the ratings are doing while these shows are being produced becasue the show isn't even on. FOX can only be looking at one thing: how the ratings do for the episode AFTER a two week hiatus. How many people will come back to the show after it has been off for so long.

There it is

Mal: No they don't! Men of God make everyone feel guilty and judged.

Birds of Prey & Firefly (TV): The "Batman" spin-off series "Birds of Prey" has been shot down. Variety reports that The WB network is pretty much set not to order any more episodes beyond its commitment of thirteen, and in fact its still up in the air as to whether the remaining four episodes of that initial commitment will even be shot. Despite big numbers for its premiere, the show has lost nearly half its audience since then with another superhero show - "The Black Sash" - tipped to be replacing it. Meanwhile Fox has ordered two more scripts for Joss Whedon's struggling sci-fi show "Firefly", delaying the decision of its fate though many are taking this as a good sign that they'll soon order the rest for the season.

“Firefly” may finish its first season, “Birds of Prey” probably won’t, and “Angel” makes it official.

*First the good news on “Firefly," from an insider we’ll call “Gunther”:

OK, no real names please, but because of the networks enthusiasm for Ariel, both in it’s writing and the stunning visual effects work, Firefly has been given the order for production, (not just scripts,) for two more episodes, meaning the rest of the back 9, (7 more episodes,) will most likely be picked up as well… Call me Gunther!

Call me hopeful, but I like this news.

For all of you folks who are taping the show, here's an idea: Spend the next two weeks getting all your friends/family caught up on Firefly. Sit them down and make them watch. Start with the three or four excellent episodes (Out of Gas, Our Mrs. Reynolds, Ariel, Jaynestown) to get them hooked.

I can't tell you how many Buffy fans I've created just by showing people the episode "Hush" (one of the best pieces of entertainment from any medium).

The quality of the show speaks for itself... all you have to do is get your friends/family in front of the TV and press play.

Aww! Just noticed the date after reading heaps of promising threads...

I INSIST! Firefly is the best damn show ive ever seen. I am lucky being one of probably only a handful of Aussies to have seen it.

I Was browsin the web one day and found an obscure reference to the show and after a little more research was able to download every ep. Its never been shown here!

Does anyone realistically think it will ever return to production? cause I really need it!

I believe 3 extra episodes have been made but not aired is this true? When will we get them?

Someone tell me if I got this right, there were 6 scripts in addition to the thirteen original episodes, of those two were produced (Trash and The Message it would seem) and one was probably Dead or Alive (although not necessarily) which would leave 3 scripts we don’t know of.

I looked at it again and it says 3 more in some places and 6 more in others. Anyone know which is true?

There were 6 total. Three and then another three. But only two ("Trash" and "The Message") were picked up. (I think it was after that that a second set of three were ordered. I'm pretty sure I have my numbers right, though I can't remember the situation exactly.) That leaves four scripts that need to surface.

[Edit - Forgot to mention: "Dead or Alive" is not one of these. DoA was written way earlier, and——if filmed——it would've taken place between "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and "Jaynestown." It was never produced, not because it wasn't ordered, but for some other reason. Possibly FOX was unhappy with it, or maybe there would've been budget difficulties.]
