I'm not even sure if it will stand up to legal scrutiny, but if nothing else it certainly puts to rest their false claims that this move has anything to do with "balancing the budget".

How exactly does taking away the rights of a group of citizens in order to take more money from them fall into the Republican mantra of "less government?"

I know you're being rhetorical, but I'll say, "It doesn't," anyway.

Also doesn't fall into "more jobs" or indeed anything else besides "screw the middle class, our money doesn't come from them, and they're more useful to us without their rights."

"This bill isn't about an assault on public employees. We have great public employees throughout the state, I have them in my district, hard-working folks," said Republican state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald. "What this is is about the budget. We're $3.6 billion in the hole. We're not going to raise taxes to solve it. We all ran, you know, this last election cycle on saying that we are going to cut government spending. ... Everybody is going to have to do their part."

I wonder what kind of pay-cut Speaker Fitzgerald and his associates took in doing "their" part.

I am too. I'm really upset that they did that. If I was anywhere near Wisconsin, I'd be protesting with them.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

This was never about the budget. This was about power and disenfranchising as many working-class voters as possible. The GOP in Wisconsin admitted as much when they passed this measure in a method that can ONLY be used to pass bills which have nothing to do with the budget. Ergo, their claims that this was a necessary measure in order to balance the budget are proven to be false, as we already knew.

But they will be recalled and voted out of office, because they overplayed their hand, and by a lot. Also, this bill will be tossed out, and criminal charges likely filed, because they broke several state laws in its passage.

Be careful what you wish for.
I was busy coordinating some responses and doing legal research on Wisconsin Law.
It's not quite yet time for Box #4, though.

Thing is, screw recall - Walker has at this point violated procedure and the law, committed at least one outright act of perjury, otherwise lied his ass off, been shown to have malice aforethought and been in collusion with certain parties of interest, and exhibited a degree of chicanery and malfeasance unacceptable at any point within a public office.

Yeah, sure, WI law doesn't allow for a recall for one year, a loophole it's quite clear by now that he was planning to exploit for all it's worth from the very beginning, but this goes beyond recall, this is territory for downright impeachment.

Which qualifies as Box#2 and Box#3 - now if the courts blow it off, then you appeal to the Supreme or the Executive, which is in principle what they are there for, and THEN, if THEY blow you off...
You do not want my answer to that, in fact I refuse to give it here - I might not even give it over in the shark pit of RWED cause I don't feel it should come to that...

Also, while not issuing any direct orders which he'd have to put in writing, Walker has also thrown repeated hints and made overtures/suggestions to the WI National Guard which border on undue influence and/or illegal orders - to their credit they blew him off, but I think that has less to do with moral repugnance than it does that goddamn Teamsters War Wagon that Hoffa and his goons parked right up front in plain sight, backed up by a company of Wolverine militia dispersed within that crowd, cause it's all fun n games till the other guys can retaliate in kind, isn't it now ?

So yeah, if there ever was a case for impeachment of a State Governor, this is certainly it.
Lookin at that crowd, I rather doubt they'd have ANY TROUBLE AT ALL meeting the signatory requirements if any.

Oh, and a nice little note regarding protester conduct - they actually DID take my advice, after they were chased out on the bullshit excuse that the building needed cleaning (which they didn't do, it was just one more lie to get their way, of course) the protesters brought their OWN cleaning crews, and have taken great pains to not only keep the building clean and presentable, but also to respect it in other ways, like the exclusive use of low-adhesive painters tape to avoid damage to the paintwork and such.

Which just makes it all the sadder that as usual with a nonviolent protest, all their efforts come to naught because they can be so safely and effectively ignored, especially if the press is complicit with the crap being pulled, which in this case most of it is - notice how hard they've tried to draw attention away, yes ?

So anyways, impeachment - and if the folks behind the rule of law decide it doesn't apply to them, well, then it applies to NOBODY, and that lesson should be brought to them immediately and personally.

I can't get into specifics beyond that, not yet, at least.

Sheriff and his top officials got generous increases in compensation

Citizens for Better Government
March 2011

MARYVILLE, TENN. -- When the Mayor asked the Sheriff to cut 12.8% from his budget, he refused. In fact, he increased his budget. The fact that he is spending nearly 25% more than the average of Sheriff’s departments in the three Tennessee counties closest to Blount County in population did not faze Sheriff Berrong at all.

All the while, the Sheriff has failed to point out that he, and many of his top officials, have been generously compensated over the last few years. The table below shows their compensation increases far exceed those of most taxpayers, who will struggle to pay the 21% tax increase that is the result of the refusal of some of our county officials to trim their budgets.

At the recent meeting the Mayor held with county employees, several high profile members of the Sheriff’s department attacked the Mayor for only taking a 12.8% salary cut, while they claimed, they had not had a salary increase in years. Then, these Sheriff’s officials launched an attack on the schools and teacher’s salaries.

The Talbott family, Ron and wife Cathy, took top compensation honors, with a combined compensation rising from $103,394 in 2007 to $111,305 in 2010. The top ten Sheriff’s officials in compensation enjoyed increases from 6.5% to 28.9% from 2007 to 2010. In addition, virtually all the 41 officials listed also have tax-free county-owned take home cars (many are unmarked cars and SUVs), free gas at the county pump, free insurance and free maintenance. They also enjoy excellent medical benefits, fully paid by the county, and generous retirement benefits. These benefits are worth at least another $10,000 to $15,000 in compensation.

The most boisterous critics of the Mayor and the schools, at the recent employee meeting, Rick Baker and Jarrod Millsaps, enjoyed compensation increases of 7.6% and 22.1% respectively.

Disturbingly, Sheriff’s officials who demonstrated highly questionable ethics over the last few years, seemed to do quite well. Talbott was a key player in an alleged scheme that resulted in a seized NASCAR-edition truck being sold to one of his relatives, without an auction, at a price that was many thousands of dollars below its value. Baker, along with Wiburn and England used county funds to purchase bogus college diplomas. Yet, they all saw compensation increases. In fact, we understand that Baker was promoted, and is now in charge of training new officers.

Before the Sheriff and his friends start throwing stones at the schools, other county departments, and the taxpayers, they need to look inward.

I just kicked these crooks a$$ in traffic court this week. Dismissal of speeding ticket with costs paid by the state, without a single word of testimony. Guess that's $500 to $5,000 less tax they get to steal.
