The July issue of SFX magazine (uk) no 119 has a story on Firefly giving some details of Serenity, tying up some threads, bigger sets, darker etc and the promise of a possible trilogy if the first is a success but also includes this quote from Nathan Fillon "the deal they have with universal precludes another TV show so a revival aint going to happen" this was at a recent UK Starfury: Fusion convention so other people may have more details.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Looks like a misquote.

According to those at the con, Nathan said "ain't going to happen anytime soon". Apparently there is some sort of clause in Joss's contract w/ Fox that prohibits Firefly coming back to TV for some set amount of time. Not sure of the exact length of that stipulation.

"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

I read that article and got really worried for a while, but i think Browncoat1 is right- I seem to remember 5 years being mentioned somewhere, which isn't too bad if you think about it- it's already been a year ish (?) since the series, so 2 years when Serenity's out, then two more films within 3 or so years.. the time should pass fairly quickly!

The exact amount of time is not known. The 5 years suggestion turned out to be just speculation at the con. The theory went - its not going to be in 2004 as they are filming, it won't be during 2005, 2006 or 2007 as the films will be showing (assuming they are going to show them yearly), so its most likely going to be in 2008.

Hello

In Jewel's interview at DreamCon she states it's 10 years
here is the quote:

"Q: You were saying how Fox doesn't want it to go to any other network or anything like that. How long do they have the rights for umm say...

Jewel: 10 years. >>collective GASP<<

Q: 10 years??

Jewel: 10 years. But, it doesn't say anything about the movies. So, we can do as many movies as we want. You know, I mean we can wait the 10 years, just keep making movies."

hope that helps

But isn't it possible that if the movies are a huge success that another network could buy out FF contract with FOX? I mean, they say 10 years, but someone could pay to get them released, couldn't they?

Personally I can almost live with the idea of no new series for a long while as long as we get at least a trilogy of movies! Think about it this way: by the time we get to the end of the third movie the shape of the characters and the stories will probably have changed (or "Joss Whedon-fied") so much that making a new series wouldn't even be the same as the old one, if you get what I mean.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE GORRAM MOVIE!!! And there better had be more movies. If there is just one, I will be so p****d off.

I'd rather have a season of Firefly than a movie. I already know that I'll walk out of the movie wishing I could see another one the next night.
And by season, I mean a REAL season, which is supposed to be what? 24 episodes? That's about 20hrs of new Firefly shows.........just about what I need.
I've read somewhere else, too, that Fox owns the TV rights for 10yrs, so unless they bring it back or sell it, it'll be 2012 before it airs again. And I don't think the cast & crew will sit around waiting for that to happen.

But, then again, if the movie is a hit, maybe they'll think twice about the series and pull it together for Fall of 2005!!!!!!!
How sweet would THAT be??????

I'll be in my bunk........

I could be wrong but, time limits aside, if the movie/movies are successful they'll make more money than a show ever could and universal will want to keep it in the movie realm. The thing to focus on is that Joss has kept the story alive and the longer he does the more the fanbase grows. I don't care what medium it comes in as long as it's produced by him for as long as he can.

Hmm. I think Jewel's quote was that Fox owned the tv rights for 10 years. That is not to say 10 years from now. That would date back to when they first optioned the show. That would be late 2001, early 2002. So, that would mean another series would be possible in 2012.

ie, ain't a gonna happen. But, then again, I don't think anyone other than Star Trek has ever gone down this road and the movies did underwrite a new series. Remember, Fox also owns F/X also and it tends towards darker themed series. And, the demographics of Firefly matches it a bit more closely.

I could always see Joss creating the next generation Firefly. Someone around here thought of a sort of Ghost ship where they find Serenity drifting... or maybe the end of the trilogy will have sequels (or a series) based on their children. That'd be interesting.

Forgive me for being a cynic but I just can't see a "Firefly: Next Generation" sort of thing going on. I suppose that it could be pulled off, but. . . I just can't see it having the same magic as the storylines of our beloved crew. Instead of a 'second-generation' type thing, an idea that would probably be better is for Joss to tell a different story within the same 'verse. Maybe the characters in that one could be complete opposites of the characters in "Firefly".

Another story from the Firefly 'verse? Hmmmmm...

How about Joss telling the story of the exodus from Earth that Was (decades before the existing storyline)? Or maybe the story of the next uprising against the Alliance (20 years later) and the fight for freedom? I know that both of those smell like other attempts at extending a franchise (Enterprise, and STTNG), but I'll bet Joss could do a better job of it than than the rulers of the Star Trek have done recently...

I couldn't agree more - rather a series than a movie, and a full series too where the artists have more than a weekend to write a script. The movie will just leave me even more p-st at FOX - can you sue a network for withholding great entertainment?

Universal and NBC are the same company now. Maybe after the film Universal can buy out FOX and put Firefly on NBC. You could still do the movies between seasons. X-files tried it with their film but the series went south afterwards and we never got a second film.

Exactly my/our point in so far as x-files film versus series - can anyone think of a good film from a tv series??!! I'm not saying this BDM won't be it but what would you really rather have? I think it's great to get the film but how do we get the series back? Just asking - sadly, I have no clue. Maybe instead of bashing FOX people should start saying nice things about them ... um, er, well encouraging them to just let the rights go or let JW & co. make it again?

Yes, it did go south, didn't it? *Is bitter over the fact that X-Files slowly putrified over its Nine Freaking Years on TV, whereas Firefly hardly got a chance to do anything. . .*

Ahem, I have heard rumors about an X-Files film sequel. . . I don't know if that's been put in Developement Hell, though. . . The sad fact is, I would probably go see it, if only to see if Chris Carter is finally and totally running every good idea he had for the show into the ground.

Distasteful as it may be, FOX has the rights; they may decide to give Firefly another try 1f the movie is successful.

One more time . . . FOX [the network] does not own the tv rights. 20th Century Fox [the producing studio] owns the rights. If they wanted to start production of Firefly for tv and show the series on ABC, TNT, SciFi or anywhere else they could, providing that network wanted the show. That can only happen if the contract between ME, 20th and Universal is renegotiated, however, because that contract forbade any return of Firefly to tv while Universal has the option for the three-picture feature deal.

So forget FOX already. There's no requirement that they have anything to do with a return of Firefly to television.

Personally, I have given up on any hope of Firefly returning to the TV. The best we can hope for is the BDM trilogy, I think.

Would it be possible to have the tv series called Serenity.. after the movies, and get around the rights issue?
