I have no idea what just happened. Did the Onion buy Fox news?

Quote:

Disney is paying $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind "Star Wars," from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It's also making a seventh movie in the "Star Wars" series called "Episode 7," set for release in 2015, with plans to follow it with Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years.

Funny, I just had some students ask me this morning when there would be another Star Wars movie, and my best guess was "After Lucas dies."

The timing couldn't be funnier, from my POV.

I think its a good thing, though. Lots of room for stories in the universe, and while Im not a Lucas-hater - he needed to step away. There are a buttload of great filmmakers who would leap at a chance to play in that universe.

Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

Oh yeah I think some new blood could work wonders for the films.

And lets not forget that Disney owns Marvel meaning Avengers meaning Joss. I'm just sayin.

They need to adapt the Thrawn trilogy. I'd also love to see Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron, but people might be disappointed in the much lower concentration of Jedi - they'd make great movies though.

Well *I* certainly wouldn't be one of em, being not fond of the hypocritical, moralist-pontificating gits.
S'why I always liked Wedge, no fancy gimmicks, he's just that badass.

I'd loooove to see Michael Wincott as Talon Karrde, but that's just too much to hope for.

I think it's a shame these things need to go on for ever. I was happier with cinema and movie history when the world had only three Star Wars films.

Still, I don't add the money: so clearly I cannot understand.

Heh, yeah, I always liked the normals in the Star Wars verse better myself. But I think some people actually DO watch for the glow sticks, fancy powers, and silly dialogue about the force.

In favour of Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron, it'd be MUCH easier to cast than to focus on the Skywalkers and Solo again. Unless they went animated.

Lucas further indicated that he will be handing over already-made story treatments for the next trilogy of films (Episodes VII, VIII and IX).

Nooooooooooo!

The next sentence was not "and Disney plans to burn them immediately".

I really hope they're just taking them as suggestions and then redoing whatever they want. It did say Lucas will stay on as "creative consultant". Hopefully that's mostly ornamental. He really needs to just ride off into the sunset. It's not like Star Wars is some unknown quantity that people need help understanding. Tons of artists have played in that universe. It's well defined. Now let them have their turn.

Ive no problem with them working from Lucas' treatment. He's good at broad strokes, its just the details that he fumbles. But there was nothing inherently bad about the over-arching structure of the preqeuls. Had the same stories had better scripts, they'd be fine.

Even bad scripts can be saved if the actors can carry it. Alternatively, Lucas needs to direct his actors better. See also Han and Leia in Episode 5 and 6, then compare to Anakin and Padme in the prequels.

Further support for this may be observed in Ewan McGreggor's performance, which was kind of the high point of the prequels.

Considering popular culture, the next adventures might have this cast:

Luke - Ryan Seacrest

Leia - Snookie

Han - Ray Romano

Lando - Dennis Rodman

Chewie - Jesse Ventura

Admiral Ackbar - James Lipton

and flashbacks with:

Obi Wan - Alex Trebek

Darth Vader - Bernie Madoff

Yoda - Honey Boo Boo

Jabba - Christina Aguilera

And with Disney running the show, maybe it'll be as great as The Black Hole.

Wedge?
The coward that abandoned Luke and Biggs in the trench of the Death Star because of a "malfunction"? Leading to the death of Biggs?

Yeah, whatever you say.

I always liked Wedge too, even before his EU adventures.

So, I read an article about who some Hollywood folks would cast to play Luke, Han and Leia. I didn't recognize many of the names but a repeated name was Ryan Goseling for Han. That seems really really far off to me. First off he's a pretty boy. Was Harisson Ford considered a pretty boy in the 70's/80's? He seems more the rugged type to me. Second, I've never seen much emotion in Ryan Goseling's acting. He seems like he's more into the blank emotionless stare that leaves the audience to read into it however they choose. That does not fit Han Solo to me in any way. I can't picture him giving the "who me?" feigned innocence look or the roguish grin of Han Solo.

When making casting decisions do they ever do any focus group research before making a decision? I gotta imagine a choice like that would be like dropping a bomb in the middle of the internet.

In episodes 4-6 The Force was described as an energy field that surrounds and binds us.

In episodes 1-3 The Force was described as microscopic organisms in the blood that speak to their host.

So what's next for The Force in episodes 7-9? Possibly one of these...

Trace levels of mercury from cans of tainted kosher tuna fish?

Cannabis t.h.c. levels in the roots of hair follicles?

Anyone who drank Billy Beer from '76 - '81?

Smoothies made from Madonna's toe nail clippings?

Anyone who can touch their nose with their tongue?

Exposure to magenta kryptonite?

Ron Paul supporters' zeta wave input polarizers?

Yah, I am also somewhat fond of Arvel Crynyd, who most people ain't even ever heard of.

He was just a fairly ordinary A-wing pilot, albeit a squad leader, who having taken critical damage while attempting to disable some of the star destroyers ion cannons so the fleet could escape, decided to forgo ejection in favor of pounding what was left of his fighter into the the then-unshielded bridge of the Executor.

Having just suffered a morale and coordination loss due to the death of Palpatine, who was using his jedi mind tricks to improve these things, this single act began a cascade failure amongst the imperial forces - not only did it kill Admiral Piett and his entire bridge crew, it sent the Executor out of contol causing it to collide with the half baked Death Star and destroyed it utterly, both turning the tide of the immediate battle and costing the empire a disproportionate chunk of its best officers since service on Vaders ship was seen as a risky, but fast route to advancement.

Just one ordinary guy, one tiny decision, a pinprick moment in a massive engagement, but boy howdy, he MADE IT COUNT.

I took it to mean the midichlorines were how jedi communicate with and use the force. Not that they created the energy field. Is it that ridiculous that there would be an actual physiological change in a force sensitive individual?

Certainly not. There's absolutely nothing ridiculous in the Star Wars galaxy. Not even the dialogue in the prequels.

That was my interpretation as well. They're the result of force sensitivity, rather than the cause of.

Yep, this is confirmed in Timothy Zahns excellent novelisations of 7-8-9.

I kinda liked Pellaeon too, he's more or less an average dude and brings with him a perspective of viewing the Empire as a positive force bringing stability and order, he really is pretty much a decent guy with honest intentions and enough integrity to be appalled by some of the more immoral actions taken on its behalf while acknowledging that sometimes you have to play rough - he wasn't, as I recall, too fond of Palpatine or Vader though.

I wonder who they'd get to play him, cause that would be a tricky role to pull off, I think.

Yeah, I've read them. But I didn't realize it was Battle meditation. Huh.

Pellaeon is cool, he eventually becomes what's left of the leadership for the Empire. Better than any of the other nutcases higher up. Just goes to show you what it takes to fix some systems of government.

Just because Disney is in charge it doesn't mean they're going to be as good or better then4, 5 and 6. When Warner Brothers made the animated "Star Wars" flick it flopped.
