That SHOULD be true... But I'm getting vibes that they're starting to write her less word salad and more just plain quirky. Plus there was talk about her line in the movie that she's okay and the hollywood psychology of her getting Miranda out of her head completely curing her.

Not very happy with that, not very realistic, but it's their character, they can do what they want with her.

In the real world of comics, telepathy is for speeding up the resolution of the main story:
Here is Judge Cassandra Anderson using telepathy on a perpetrator to quickly get his cooperation in Mars-Attacks-Judge-Dredd-12-2013. Later in the same issue, she saves the world in only 8 pages. It was easy because that is what telepathy is for in comic book storytelling.

Last time Judge Anderson was in a movie, her telepathy was for getting Judge Dredd into position faster so he can shoot more perps. Same could happen to River in the comics, except it is Mal, Zoe, or Jayne getting into position to shoot.

he knows the limits of the 'Verse? I find that gullible.

Psychic abilities such as telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis
... If one experiences such things or think they do, that
would be a hallucination? One should run-not-walk to the
nearest psychiatrist & get anti-psychotic drugs?

Trouble is, being psychic can be fun, and some folks don't
wanna cure it.

River: Simon said she was always gifted. When she recovered,
as I see it, the amygdala's function was somehow restored;
she was no longer buffeted about by uncontrolled paranoia.
But her gifts remained.

I would not say people who believe in psychic powers are gullible. However, they are too willing to try to find easy explanations for things that do not have easy answers. It is not wise to call what is random chance, statistics, or deliberate manipulation something supernatural when it is not. That is fallacy.

And there are people who would prey upon that.

Writers just use telepathy as a tool to get to end of a script and be paid. I do wish they would take it more seriously. Or at least one writer, with Whedon as a last name, working on one property, either in Serenity comics or movies, could.

The most exciting and creative parts of science are concerned with things that we are still struggling to understand. That would make a good Firefly story.

Astronaut Edgar Mitchell:
“To broaden the knowledge of the nature and potentials of mind

To that end, he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1973.
Noetic, from the Greek word noetikos, means “inner/intuitive
knowing.”

I was there on one occassion when founding Noetic Sciences was
announced. I believe Mitchell was in the SF Bay area to contact
"adepts" at Lewis Bostwick's Berkeley Psychic Institute. I have
a conflict in dates here; Wiki shows BPI founded in 1973 & IoNS
founded also in 1973. In my memory, BPI was pretty well esta-
blished before I met Ed Mitchell.

My older sis was, at the time, a budding entrepreneur and a student
at BPI. She invited me to a party one night; I believe the main pur-
pose of this event was to show off Ed. She announced the intended
founding of IoNS. She hoped to be involved in it. As for me, I got
drunk and tripped off the stairs & wrenched an ankle.

Water under the bridge, I forgot it. But a year or so ago, I looked
up Edgar Mitchell & Noetic Sciences. While I was pleasantly surprised
that IoNS exists, I supposed it was mostly window dressing.

Now you tell me they are doing actual work there!! I am pleased.

thought about it
. A personal vignette. It was in 1973, BTW.
The only thing you can prove for yourself in my statement is
that both of those organizations exist, or in the case of BPI,
I'm not sure it's still a working entity. Of course, there are
still people around who honed their skills there.

The "absolute truth" is IoNS & BPI exist(ed) and plenty of
people know it first hand.

The existence of IoNS and BPI does not prove the validity of
PSI ... so please don't pretend to think I said that.

There is truth to PSI IMO. That truth is usually subjective.
Many people receive information via a psychic ability daily,
IMO. They cannot prove it. They shouldn't have to until the
time comes when scientists will look at it objectively.
So far, PSI is not scientifically proven.

Second quotes Aldiss, 3 paragraphs of it. I narrowed in on
"finds ready credence among the gullible." I responded to
Aldiss with "So ... [he thinks] he knows the limits of the
'Verse? I find that gullible."

More accurately, I might have said I find his rejection of
the possibility of real psychic occurances to be "certainty
and superiority" where it's not justified & an open & curious
approach to the topic seems better.

I expect you to continue to misrepresent everything I say.
That's been my experience with you. It is not a sin for me
to speak with certainty of the things I know.

The Berkeley Psychic Institute

In the 70's & even a bit in the 80's, I had contact with this group.
I got a number of readings & healings there. I was never interested
in becoming a student (disciple?), mainly because I have no talent
for it. If I were psychic, I think the energy in & around the group
would have sent me screaming from the room. I met 2 fellas there
who were good guys, upbeat, nurturing. They didn't stay long at BPI
but went off on their own. Good.

Now:
BPI does still exist with branches in Berkeley, Santa Rosa, & Sacramento.
Its founder, Lewis Bostwick, died in 1995. (That shouldn't stop him,
of course -- just the opposite. Is he still hanging about as a Spiritual
Guide & Reader?)

On YouTube are a number of exposé videos about BPI & Lewis Bostwick
by Jeffrey Watts, formerly an associate.
