COMICBOOKRESOURCES.COM - On January 29, Serenity will fly again. Writer Zack Whedon and artist Georges Jeanty shepherd the return of Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the rest of the crew -- well, most of them anyway -- in the pages of "Serenity: Leaves on the Wind," a new six-issue miniseries from Dark Horse Comics...

That SHOULD be true... But I'm getting vibes that they're starting to write her less word salad and more just plain quirky. Plus there was talk about her line in the movie that she's okay and the hollywood psychology of her getting Miranda out of her head completely curing her.

Not very happy with that, not very realistic, but it's their character, they can do what they want with her.

Normal? I wanted Firefly to really look at River's telepathy, as in take it seriously. (Or maybe it is River's precognition. I never could tell if the Whedons ever decided what River can or can't do.) I know it's not gonna happen because Science Fiction is not about science. Or maybe because the Whedons secretly agree with what Brian W. Aldiss wrote:
Quote:

A theme given almost equal prominence with space travel is telepathy. Whereas interplanetary and interstellar voyages have a technological and scientific basis, telepathy is almost as clearly anti-scientific. No rational reasons can be conjured as to why humanity should develop an ability to communicate directly, mind to mind, without speech in this or any future generation.

The idea of telepathy is ancient, but was given new impetus by the discovery of wireless waves and the development of radio at the beginning of this century: if unseen messages can be directed from crystal, why not from head to head? This false analogy has taken root in the popular mind. Any charlatan coming along and claiming to bend spoons or read print with his or her fingertips finds ready credence among the gullible.

Yet psi powers have deservedly found their way from the various quack psychic phenomena investigated so solemnly at the end of the 19th century into the pages of science-fiction stories. For SF readers wish to see the world change, to see that new certainty which must necessarily develop, and telepathy would change the world even more effectively than the A-bomb or space travel.

from The Science Fiction Source Book, 1984, ISBN 0442292554

In the real world of comics, telepathy is for speeding up the resolution of the main story:
Here is Judge Cassandra Anderson using telepathy on a perpetrator to quickly get his cooperation in Mars-Attacks-Judge-Dredd-12-2013. Later in the same issue, she saves the world in only 8 pages. It was easy because that is what telepathy is for in comic book storytelling.

Last time Judge Anderson was in a movie, her telepathy was for getting Judge Dredd into position faster so he can shoot more perps. Same could happen to River in the comics, except it is Mal, Zoe, or Jayne getting into position to shoot.

^ Hmmm. I never knew that Brian Aldiss wrote that psychic
abilities only find ready credence among the gullible. So ...
he knows the limits of the 'Verse? I find that gullible.

Psychic abilities such as telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis
... If one experiences such things or think they do, that
would be a hallucination? One should run-not-walk to the
nearest psychiatrist & get anti-psychotic drugs?

Trouble is, being psychic can be fun, and some folks don't
wanna cure it.

River: Simon said she was always gifted. When she recovered,
as I see it, the amygdala's function was somehow restored;
she was no longer buffeted about by uncontrolled paranoia.
But her gifts remained.

I would not say people who believe in psychic powers are gullible. However, they are too willing to try to find easy explanations for things that do not have easy answers. It is not wise to call what is random chance, statistics, or deliberate manipulation something supernatural when it is not. That is fallacy.

And there are people who would prey upon that.

Spock used telepathy to come back from the dead because the studio needed the character for a sequel. Money talks.

Spock is killed in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and his mind is telepathically reloaded into his clone in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). Dr McCoy is the psychic storage battery that gives new Spock the soul spark from old Spock. Well, that's certainly believable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_III:_The_Search_for_Spock

Writers just use telepathy as a tool to get to end of a script and be paid. I do wish they would take it more seriously. Or at least one writer, with Whedon as a last name, working on one property, either in Serenity comics or movies, could.

The most exciting and creative parts of science are concerned with things that we are still struggling to understand. That would make a good Firefly story.

Here are some scientists that are serious about telepathy.

"Science and the taboo of psi" with Dean Radin
Quote:

Google Tech Talks
January, 16 2008

ABSTRACT

Do telepathy, clairvoyance and other "psi" abilities exist? The majority of the general population believes that they do, and yet fewer than one percent of mainstream academic institutions have any faculty known for their interest in these frequently reported experiences. Why is a topic of enduring and widespread interest met with such resounding silence in academia? The answer is not due to a lack of scientific evidence, or even to a lack of scientific interest, but rather involves a taboo. I will discuss the nature of this taboo, some of the empirical evidence and critical responses, and speculate on the implications.

Speaker: Dean Radin
Dean Radin is a researcher and author in the field of parapsychology. He is Senior Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and four-time former President of the Parapsychological Association. He holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a masters degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has worked at AT&T Bell Labs and GTE Labs, mainly on human factors of advanced telecommunications products and services, and held appointments at Princeton University, Edinburgh University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, SRI International, Interval Research Corporation, and Boundary Institute. At these facilities he was engaged in basic research on exceptional human capacities, principally psi phenomena.

The Extended Mind: Recent Experimental Evidence with Rupert Sheldrake
Quote:

Google Tech Talks
September 2, 2008

ABSTRACT

We have been brought up to believe that the mind is located inside the head. But there are good reasons for thinking that this view is too limited. Recent experimental results show that people can influence others at a distance just by looking at them, even if they look from behind and if all sensory clues are eliminated. And people's intentions can be detected by animals from miles away. The commonest kind of non-local interaction mental influence occurs in connection with telephone calls, where most people have had the experience of thinking of someone shortly before they ring. Controlled, randomized tests on telephone telepathy have given highly significant positive results. Research techniques have now been automated and experiments on telepathy are now being conducted through the internet and cell phones, enabling widespread participation.

Speaker: Rupert Sheldrake
Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D. is a biologist and author of more than 75 technical papers and ten books, the most recent being The Sense of Being Stared At. He studied at Cambridge and Harvard Universities, was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge and a Research Fellow of the Royal Society. He is currently Director of the Perrott-Warrick project, funded from Trinity College Cambridge.

Thank You, Second!

http://noetic.org/about/history/
Astronaut Edgar Mitchell:
“To broaden the knowledge of the nature and potentials of mind
and consciousness and to apply that knowledge to the enhancement
of human well-being and the quality of life on the planet.”

To that end, he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1973.
Noetic, from the Greek word noetikos, means “inner/intuitive
knowing.”

I was there on one occassion when founding Noetic Sciences was
announced. I believe Mitchell was in the SF Bay area to contact
"adepts" at Lewis Bostwick's Berkeley Psychic Institute. I have
a conflict in dates here; Wiki shows BPI founded in 1973 & IoNS
founded also in 1973. In my memory, BPI was pretty well esta-
blished before I met Ed Mitchell.

My older sis was, at the time, a budding entrepreneur and a student
at BPI. She invited me to a party one night; I believe the main pur-
pose of this event was to show off Ed. She announced the intended
founding of IoNS. She hoped to be involved in it. As for me, I got
drunk and tripped off the stairs & wrenched an ankle.

Water under the bridge, I forgot it. But a year or so ago, I looked
up Edgar Mitchell & Noetic Sciences. While I was pleasantly surprised
that IoNS exists, I supposed it was mostly window dressing.

Now you tell me they are doing actual work there!! I am pleased.

And you just called them "the absolute truth."

The paragraph above quoting me says where I was and what I
thought about it
. A personal vignette. It was in 1973, BTW.
The only thing you can prove for yourself in my statement is
that both of those organizations exist, or in the case of BPI,
I'm not sure it's still a working entity. Of course, there are
still people around who honed their skills there.

The "absolute truth" is IoNS & BPI exist(ed) and plenty of
people know it first hand.

The existence of IoNS and BPI does not prove the validity of
PSI ... so please don't pretend to think I said that.

Please don't pretend you don't think there's truth to psi and noetics, otherwise you wouldn't be having that conversation or saying what you have about skeptics.

You can believe what you want, and if I don't agree the most you'll get from me is an eyeroll. What sets me off is when certainty and superiority dominate the tone of the discussion.

There is truth to PSI IMO. That truth is usually subjective.
Many people receive information via a psychic ability daily,
IMO. They cannot prove it. They shouldn't have to until the
time comes when scientists will look at it objectively.
So far, PSI is not scientifically proven.

Byte: "when certainty and superiority dominate the tone of the discussion."

Second quotes Aldiss, 3 paragraphs of it. I narrowed in on
"finds ready credence among the gullible." I responded to
Aldiss with "So ... [he thinks] he knows the limits of the
'Verse? I find that gullible."

More accurately, I might have said I find his rejection of
the possibility of real psychic occurances to be "certainty
and superiority" where it's not justified & an open & curious
approach to the topic seems better.

I expect you to continue to misrepresent everything I say.
That's been my experience with you. It is not a sin for me
to speak with certainty of the things I know.

Then I didn't misrepresent you.

Both sides are certain and think they know the truth and think the other side is gullible. It is the most frustrating thing about any discourse between scientists and the fringe.

The Berkeley Psychic Institute

In the 70's & even a bit in the 80's, I had contact with this group.
I got a number of readings & healings there. I was never interested
in becoming a student (disciple?), mainly because I have no talent
for it. If I were psychic, I think the energy in & around the group
would have sent me screaming from the room. I met 2 fellas there
who were good guys, upbeat, nurturing. They didn't stay long at BPI
but went off on their own. Good.

Now:
BPI does still exist with branches in Berkeley, Santa Rosa, & Sacramento.
Its founder, Lewis Bostwick, died in 1995. (That shouldn't stop him,
of course -- just the opposite. Is he still hanging about as a Spiritual
Guide & Reader?)

On YouTube are a number of exposé videos about BPI & Lewis Bostwick
by Jeffrey Watts, formerly an associate.

Berkeley Psychic Institute a Cult in Disguise
Lewis S Bostwick Psychotic not Psychic
Spiritual Perversion at the Berkeley Psychic Institute
Church of Divine Man & Scientology - The Tech dont work!
etc. ...

I don't hear Watts denying ESP. But that some practitioners are dishonest
and abusive. ... I'd go with Predatory.
