Firefly Official Message Board
Thread Title: Thanks for your support!
Dated: December 6, 2002

Well. Here I am. It took an army of technicians (and my wife jiggling the frikkin phone cord) to get me on actual line, actually posting. Of course, you all already know what I'm going to say. I hate pengiuns! Hate 'em! Greasy, non-flying parasitic...
All right. That was weird. But you DO know what I'm gonna say next, which is that we're back. Tomorrow night, actual Firefly eppage will occur, and I'm wicked in love with this installment. Sure as I hate penguins, I think this ep is truly spectacular. Why? Well, mainly because there's one sequence I can't watch without crying, and you'd be surprised who it is that makes me cry. Gunfights, torture, sparkling witticisms and the best ensemble cast I've ever known (and yes, I'm counting the other two) aside, this one just gets me. I guess I sound like a lamo salesman, but you guys are here, you're probably fans, so why would I try to convince you? I should be on the Providence site with this kinda talk. But the fact is, I'm just pumped.
Needless to say, I'm BOWLED over by the RELENTLESS promotion our mother network has given the show. With the kind of campaign that can't help but reach hundreds of dozens of households, we can't fail to DEVOUR our timeslot. Uh, Heh.... well you guys are gonna watch, right?
I'm off to browseland! I shall return if the computer holds up. And I'll definitely be checking in tomorrow night to see if you all agree with my feelings about this ep. See ya.

Thread Title: This is Joss. Space is Black and Scary
Dated: December 6, 2002

Hullo, friends and so-called "friends". (I know the difference: those of you that are plotting my death are in BIG trouble. It was funny once.) Tomorrow's the big night. I think we're in for some EXTRA-funny home videos. Or, you know, you could watch that other show.
I'll tell you the truth. Rough month. We keep comparing ourselves and our situation to Out of Gas. At once point I told an executive that I thought my life had become that ep, and that I was no longer Mal, I was now the captain of the crappy ship that shot him. I will do ANYTHING to ANYONE to keep this bird in the air.

See, I'm in love. Which was unforseen and inconvenient. I've never felt this way about a show, or about a cast or a working experience. I love my other shows with gushy passion, but the coalescence of factors on this show just changed me. If you knew the people I get to work with...

Well, I guess you sort of do. So many people have commented on how the crew really seems to get along, to rely on each other on the show. Some things you can't fake. My cast are the strongest, nicest bunch I've ever known. I have dear dear friends in all my casts but this crew as a whole, to a man, without execption, is truly a band of brothers. And sisters. A band of siblings. Except they like each other. Is this coming through?

And forget the cast. The crew, the staff, the DP... you walk into this world and it's breathtaking, the support and hardwork and offputting odor (which turned out to be me, so that's okay). These people make me want to work harder.

And you guys. We had this site up every day before we ever aired an ep. Just saeeing the work and anticipation that went into building it inspired us from the first days of fighting for our lives. You don't even know. So thanks.

War Stories. I think it's an incredible ep, and you're gonna see sides of just about everyone you haven't seen. It's the kind of ep that makes me say "If we never make another, we've done all right".

And for the record, that's exactly what I plan to be saying in year seven.

Thanks, guys. Sorry for the unexpected and inexcusable sincerity. It won't happen again.

Sincerely (God! It happened again! I'm so lame!),

joss.

Thread Title: Next Week; Objects in Space!
Dated: December 6, 2002 11:22

So, next week... It's an ep of mine, and I'm very into it. It's Riverrific, and I honestly think anyone who isn't converted will see what an extraordinary talent Summer Glau is. Plus Richard Brooks plays the bounty hunter beautifully. And other treats... it a gripping drama, but more importantly it's an absurdist statement about the meaning of objects, and how many of those have bounty hunters in them? Fun fun.

Thread: Love for the show but...
Dated: Dec 6, 2002

Hey guys. The lesbian scene does come off as gratuitious to some, I get that. The fact is, there was another scene with the councillor where Inara visited her, asking for help and we discovered she had a devoted husband and son. Inara had a cahnce to use her knowledge of the coucillor's secret against her and didn't use it, prompting the councillor to follow her out, wanting to help, and mistaking Mal for Inara's lover. The scene didn't quite work and the show was quite long, so out it came. So there was further character development intended. Plus, I did want to establish the idea that Inara took clients not based on sexuality, and Jayne's refrain cracks me up to the ends of the earth. So there you have it. Also, I'm pandering.
Meanwhile, it's Wash who always makes me cry when he stands up and says 'b&stard's not gettin' DAYS...'

I can't help it. I'm such a geek for this show.

This is supposed to be the deleted scene which would have tied in the whole love scene. I think. I found this on the official board and have no way of validating but it does seem to fit.

Thread: cut scenes from "War Stories"

Quote:

Cut scene:
37 Int Councilor's House .. Night

Inara waits in the foyer of this opulent home, uncomfortable about being there. The Councilor enters, a bit blindsided by Inara, who approaches ..

Inara: I'm sorry to come unannounced.

Councilor: What can I do for you, Miss Serra?

Inara catches the none too subtle tone.

Inara: I was hoping for a min of your time; is there somewhere private we could talk?

The Councilor is starting to worry about where this is going. She pulls Inara aside.

Councilor: What do you want?

Inara: Do you know the name Adelia Niska?

Councilor: Unfortunately.

Inara: He's holding Captain Reynolds.

The Councilor reacts .. she's actually relieved that this is why Inara came.

Counclior: I'm sorry for your loss. [off Inara's look] There's nothing I can do.

Inara: What about your contacts in the Council, I'm sure one of them..

Councilor: I'm sorry. Miss Serra. Good Night.

Vanilla Husband off screen: Sweetie, have you seen my .. [he enters and sees Inara .. regards her with obvious contempt.]

Vanilla: We're getting solicitors at the house now?

Inara: I was just leaving. Councilor, thank you again for your generosity to the children's shelter. Good night. [as she gets the Councilor's coldness she descends the steps]

Councilor: Inara, Thank you. [off Inara's blank look] You had me in an awkward situation, you didn't press your advantage.

Inara: I'd never take advantage of a client's confidence.

C: I .. I appreciate it. I'm just sorry I can't do more to help you.

Inara: (temper rising) Then do more .. help me. The council has jurisdiction over Niska's Skyplex. There must be something you can do.

C: A year ago, maybe, but Niska's become .. he's bought off half the council.

Inara: Then what about the other half?

C: A friend on the council tried to stand against Niska. He went to meet with him and was mailed back to his family. His head, arms, legs .. each in a different package.

Inara: So call in the alliance .. have them send the armed squads in.

C: Alliance won't risk a firefight with Niska. They'd lose too many men and that's not in the budget. (beat) I'm sorry about Captain Reynolds. There's just nothing I can do.

Inara: [Keeps her anger in check .. she hates the impotence of the system, her own helplessness. But she keeps up the veil:] Thank you for your time. [turns to go]

C: Inara. I hope I'm not out of line, but .. I was under the impression that Companions weren't allowed to take lovers.

Inara: He's not my lover.

"You are right. There are several other parts of your body I much rather see snapped off."
