Navy pilot Wally Shirra, who was the only astronaut to fly in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs died on the Third of May. He was 84 years old and died of natural causes. He was the Third United States pilot to orbit the Earth. His last mission was in Apollo 7.

I just read about this on the Flash Gordon site I visit. Thought I would pass it on.

I gasped when I read this.

I remember those halcyon days of the moonshots so well. That's where I got the "dream of the stars" from my Dad. I'm not sure who he quoted when we discussed spaceflight, so I can't credit the "dream of the stars" part, but I am still following that dream all these years later and count the astronauts and everyone involved in the space program as my heroes.

Wally Schirra was one of my heroes.

May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted by his bravery and goodness.

Here's NASA's page about it:

We will never see his kind again. Godspeed.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

We sniff the air, we don't kiss the dirt.

Unless I'm mistaken, doesn't that just leave Scott Carpenter and John Glenn from the original seven?
