Well we are all aware of the companions in Firefly. They're not whores(Mal wouldn't agree),but they do a service that is respected. But we haven't heard of a male companion. I mean in Heart of Gold the whore house had "man whores". But we've never heard of man companions. So do you think the verse would have a place for such a career for a man?

Actually, Kaylee refered to them as "boy whores". Since Mande later asks Mal if he would prefer a boy,
I believe they were there to service those customers who prefer young men/boys.

It would make sense that there were gigolos/male consorts who service women since the counselor shows
that there are rich powerful women who can and will pay for companionship (exscuse the pun). Perhaps
there were none associated with house madrasa since I had the impression that that house was part of a
larger organization, or perhaps male consorts have their own separate organization. If the show had remained on the air, Joss may have mentioned this

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

It stands to reason that there would be male companions, though as in modern times, I doubt there would be nearly as many as there are female companions.

But there was doubt that the 'boy whores' serviced women folk.

It seems to me to be unlikely that male companions exist whose clientelle is mostly female.

Um, I'm lost. Uh, I'm Angry. And I'm Armed.

I figure that while, not as many.....they are alive and well and making money on some Alliance planets.

Kaylee was surprised and delighted to learn that there were boy whores.

Kinda like Chippendale dancers.....not a lot of them but they do exist.

I do believe you mean "Nandi" ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/reference.asp?r=642).

It would be (pardon the expression) "fair and balanced" for male companions, gay, straight or otherwise, to exist in the 'Verse, but that doesn't necessarily prove their existence. Prostitution is legal in Nevada right now, but only for women servicing men.

Knowing the answer, one way or the other, however, would give an interesting insight into the cultures of the 'Verse, and their attitudes towards both sex and sexual equality. Unfortunately, Joss has not yet had a chance to paint on the broad canvas he planned for. Just one more reason to hate Fox.

I would have thought there would be male companions, but maybe it's a similar situation to female astronauts, it is just more unusual to have them.

When the depiction of heterodox relationships has been made illegal or restricted to unprofitably small audiences, you may have to get on the Freedom Train to visit theatres showing the Serenity sequels. Prepare your cover stories for the Border Police now. If you're suitably rich or are Ordained there won't be a problem, of course.
