Likes to mess with stuffs.

JOEUTICHI.COM - Could Joss Whedon be Hollywood’s unluckiest man? The 47-year-old creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, reinvented television and created a cultural phenomenon with his tale of a high school student forced to battle demons both literal and metaphorical. But as subsequent work continues to draw critical praise and committed fans, Whedon’s ability to keep it on the air has been frequently tested....

No more running. I aim to misbehave.

What Whedon has endured he gained back many times over. To say something, people not only listen but agree really is such a reward. I have admiration for his persistence.

It was the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th that first set Whedon’s mind racing on what would become The Cabin in the Woods. “I did walk out, but I found it fascinating that the movie opens with a group of expendable teens, which Jason kills – not, by the way, very inventively – and then the movie starts, and an even more expendable group of teens shows up. It was as hateful as anything I’ve seen. There’s an element of this ‘torture porn’ promulgation that’s made me as angry as I can remember being.”

If torture porn is Whedon’s kryptonite, then Hollywood must be his super-villain, for the continued adventures of fictional serial killers like Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Jigsaw have kept studio balance sheets ticking over healthily. He can’t subscribe to such amoral filmmaking.

Sure, he hasn't had great success on TV since Buffy and Angel, but few showrunners (save Dick Cook) stay on top for long - so he's hardly unique in that area.

Cabin didn't do great at the boxoffice - but horror/comedy hybrids almost never do.

He is about to have one of the biggest hits of the year, though. So I think he's doing okay.

People keep saying this. I guess I don't understand what it means to do well at the box office, because I thought that holding steady between rank three and five was pretty good. (Cabin in the Woods is currently number four on the "daily" section of boxofficemojo; it was ranked number five a few days ago, and number three its opening weekend.)
What, exactly, would be "doing great" at the box office? Beating a PG-13 tweenfest based on a best-selling trilogy of YA novels? I don't think anyone would expect that. It is beating the uber-hyped 3D-spectacular re-release of Titanic, and it seems like everyone I know went to see that for whatever reason. Does that count for anything, I wonder?

Facts are stubborn things.

Rank is pretty subjective and relative, a movie could be at #3 on one week, while a different movie, making less overall, could be #1 a different week.

What it really comes down to is profit in relation to budget.

Im not saying it's a flop, but generally speaking, a movie needs to make at least double its budget at the boxoffice to break even, and it has currently grossed about $37 million against a $30 million budget. So, it's virtually impossible for it to break even theatrically at this point - though the uposide being that Joss' stuff, and horror/comedies in general, do much better on video. It'll eventually turn a profit, but when a genre movie with stellar reviews can't break even theatrically - that is generall considered a dissapointment.
