I haven't seen much on this yet other than a brief trailer and the fact that Serenity will have a trailer attached to it. So, I was wondering if anyone has heard just how much of the story this film will cover. Is it just the first book? Are there possible sequels if this does well? Does Arthur stay in his robe the whole time like in the book? Just curious what is known.
I really hope they include my favourite minor character: Rob Mckenna: The Rain God.

There's a review of a rough cut at Aintitcool ( http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=19282). It doesn't have a whole lot of specifics in the way of plot, but he does say something about wanting it to do well so we can see Restaurant At The End Of The Universe. I don't know if that's wishful thinking or if a possible sequel is planned if the movie does well. The review mostly talks about characters (Arthur, Ford, Trillian, Zaphod, Marvin). There are mentions of the dolphins, Vogons, Heart of Gold, the Guide, and the whale (but interestingly, not the potted plant. I forget, was it a petunia?)

That probably doesn't help you out, but it's the first thing I've seen about the movie other than the trailer and what's on IMDB.

Packer fans welcome.
All others tolerated.

I heard it doesn't even go as far as the TV show went, but Douglas Adams wrote the script before he died, so it should be good. I think it's the first book.

Yes, the bowl of petunias, that's Agrajag. He's such an angry little character, but I like him so. He's so unlucky though.

Thanks,
yeah that helps a bit. Considering how tight they've been with info. It's been far too long since I've read the guide, I'll have to fix that soon [After watching the Wonderfalls DVDs out today] but yes I recall the Potted Petunia. After the whale's long dialog, something about "...round, yes ground I'll call it ground. I wonder if it will be my friend." the petunia says someting like, "oh no, not again."
For those of you who have read the guide, if you haven't already, check out "Good Omens, the nice and accurate prophecies of Agnus Nutter, witch." by Neil Gaimen[a fan of Douglas Adams and popular writer of Sandman] and Terry Pratchet.

2005 looks like a good year for alternative Sci-Fi (and some predictable junk as well)...

If you want to stay up to date on the H2G2 movie, check out http://www.planetmagrathea.com/

best site I've found so far and very, very complete.

Shiny!

Now, how's about we get on with this increasingly eerie-ass day

First off it is a movie based just on the first book similarly titled.

As others have indicated, Douglas Adams had completed a fairly complete rough draft of H2G2 just prior to his death. When production started on the movie his estate gave permission to use his script for the movie. Two other writters polished his script but left it mainly intact.

All of this preface is important because Adams felt H2G2 was a living thing. He made changes to the characters and the storylines, even added new characters, so it is not going to follow the original book exactly. Some may not like this and may be expecting the movie to largely follow the first book.

Second, Adams only wrote the script to the first book in his multi-book "trilogy." If sequals follow the new scripts would have to be written by someone else. Since Adams altered elements of the story from the book in his script, it will make writing a script from his other books difficult (i.e. they would probably attempt to incorporate his changes in the first book into any future sequals). Whether anyone else is up to the task is a huge question mark.

1 name does come to mind if they attempt sequels with a new writer. I don't know if he has any script writing experience, but he was a big fan of Douglas Adams and wrote a book about him, as well as a book with similar humour. I speak of Neil Gaiman [of Sandman comics fame] he and Terrry pratchet wrote Good Omens.

I don't suppose anyone here is familiar with the Space Odyssey disaster? The books' plot changes to reflect the movie. Odd. It doesn't work well. Let's hope they can incorporate the new stuff well.

Zaphod won't have two heads, will he?

I think both Terry and Neil woulkd be excellent choices. I hadn't considered them as possibilities. You're right though, I don't know what kind of script writing experience they have. My pref would be for Terry, although Neil would be great. Terry has a similar humorous approach to sci-fi that would be a good fit for any future Hitchhiker scripts.

From what I've seen he does have two heads. They just aren't side by side. One is under the other and his head rolls back. odd.
