HJERMSTED

In the theater:

Sky Blue - Anime from Korea. Looks great, but suffers from weak charcaterization and story telling. Come to think of it, that's the problem I have with most anime. But the animation itself always makes for a visual treat. If you're curious about this film... wait for the dvd.

Millions - This is a fantastic film (minus the last five minutes). I laughed a LOT during this story of two british school kids who find a ton of money. I also teared up in places. Forget the regretable choice of an ending and enjoy the rest of this gem.

On dvd:

Deadwood: Season One - I don't love the western genre as a rule, but I DO love great westerns. Among my favorite westerns are: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Magnificent Seven, and Unforgiven. I even like Silverado which, in my mind, is to the western what Star Trek IV is to the Star Trek franchise: a lot of fun with a familiar premise. I now add this HBO series to my list of favorite westerns. Along with fine acting and great writing, Deadwood has historical realism in its corner adding heft to this story of a temporarily anarchistic white man's town on Indian Land. If you have a problem with the language in this show, just keep in mind what kind of person this type of town would attract.... certainly not puritans!

Battlestar Galactica: The Mini-Series - I watched the miniseries a few weeks back and loved it. It's on DVD and if you haven't seen it already, you have a new mission: go rent or buy the Battlestar Galactica miniseries!! The first season of this show (now wrapping up on Sci Fi channel USA) delivers on all the promise apparent in the miniseries. Ronald D. Moore has a fantastic premise here... taking what was good about the original 1970s series and leaving behind all of the bad. Plus: I'm told ZOIC studios does the special effects. You may recall they also did the effects for Firefly.

Next week: Sin City, BABY!!!!!
