Remember, Firefly starts this week on SciFi. Since Tivo logs recording and season passes for ratings, you may all want to record or season pass Firefly. Even if you end up deleting them, it will help our viewership and ratings numbers.

Gotta help the cause!

Will do. So TiVo keeps a record of what you have recorded and season-passed and gives those numbers to somebody like Nielsen or the networks?

TiVo keeps a record of everything you do. Every single remote click is sent to them. Thats how they know things like what was the most rewatched commercial during the Super Bowl.

TiVo numbers are not factored into ratings. In fact, the networks don't care about things you record because it means you weren't there watching it and seeing the ads.

I just got signed up to be a Nielson household - local for one week (starting tomorrow) during sweeps not national for an extended period - but hey, I could always get promoted, right?

I already wrote Firefly in on the Friday night slot. That outta scare 'em.

How about generic TiVos? We have one through our cable provider. Do they keep track of what's being watched too?

My understanding is that they formulate their own rating numbers, which can differ from Nielsons, and sell that info. Since it's what people record as to what happens to be on, it represents fanbase better. Take a look at this website:

Yes TiVo generates their own statistics, but the networks don't make decisions using them like they do with Nielson ratings. The networks sell ad time based on the number of people they can get to watch the program so the ads are seen. The networks and advertisers know that if you record a program on a DVR (or even a VCR), then you are going to scan through the commercials and not watch them.

Bottom line, if you are not watching it live, then you mean nothing to them. The only numbers that really count are Nielson numbers.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't make a season pass, by all means do it. But it really won't do much.

If it doesn't say Tivo, it is not a Tivo, it is a DVR.

Tivo keeps its own numbers. They make reports on national viewership patterns. However, they are not allowed to keep track of personal viewer habits. I was a nielson household for tivo use (not a general ratings household) last winter, where I waived the personal viewer habits clause during the period of the study.

I have never seen a report of viewer patterns from cable DVR's the way TIVO does, but it wouldn't shock me if they kept track of what you watched, but it probably is not for survey patterns the way TIVO is.

Your response about networks not caring if you are not watching live are not exactly true. A lot of the Mark Burnett reality shows have started using in show product placements, and are using some of the Tivo data about viewers watching later to supplement their ad rates.

As DVRs increase in the population the television networks are going to have to develop new business models.
