Thanks for the welcome and the response. Its definitely not millennium. i think its a newish show in the last five years. very youngish lead actor, handsomer than david duchovny in the first season of X-files. Anyway i'll keep thingking about it.

Now that you've jogged my memory, it was Darren McGavin. I have an image in my mind of film noir lighting and his long, angular jaw. Funny, but that, and the plot summary are what I remember. Now that I've got the actor's name I'll try imdb.com.
