Anyone here see the new Elektra unrated cut- is it any better than the original?

I kinda liked Elektra, but not enough to buy it. It was a helluva lot better than Daredevil, at any rate.
But is this new cut an improvement? I was so on the fence about owning it, a better cut might make the difference.
So, anyone see it?

Chrisisall, sai.

I liked elektra too. Don't know why people said it was worse than daredevil? Daredevil was terrible IMO.

I guess the previews for Elektra really made it look like the whole movie was about Jennifer Garner's rack. I mean...that was a big part of the movie...but there was a plot too. An action movie plot, but a plot none the less.

Huh. I seem to be the only peson who actually liked Daredevil. But, anyways, check out the director's cut of Daredevil because it is a lot more mature than the theatre cut and more people seem to like it. I found it was a lot darker and more original than the theatre cut also.

I have to agree, the director's cut of Daredevil was a massive improvement. Still has some flaws of course, but I was amazed at what a difference it made. I also really liked that, unlike most director's cuts that just add whatever was still lying around, they also removed some things that didn't work from the theatrical cut.

What I found very amusing was the documentary about that cut. Watching the director trying to be very diplomatic about his thoughts on the inferior theatrical cut, intercut with one of the studio guys trying to defend the theatrical cut as better.

I havn't seen the new cut of Elektra, but I thought the original version was very mediocre, and given how very, very little they used of the source material, I left wondering why they even bothered to make it. And apparently this cut just adds 2 minutes of deleted material, that was already on the first DVD (as opposed to 30 minutes of extra and re-arranged footage- and 5 minutes removed -on Daredevil).

I have to agree the director's cut of Elektra was equally terrible as the movie...

I'm amazed that you thought Elektra was a lot better than Daredevil. To each his own I suppose, but IMO Daredevil (the theatrical cut) was a decent entertaining movie... the director's cut however was fantastic. I loved it. It certainly did add a lot more to the movie... it actually had a strong story and got me into the Daredevil comics.

I thought I'd like Elektra, even if it was only as a guilty pleasure, since those that criticized it were the same ones that criticized DD. But I really didn't like it.

Why was it not written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson? After all, he did set it up at the end of DD, and did a great job of DD (IMO). For me, Elektra was definitely all style and no substance

I thought that DD was wasn't nearly dark enough, the story needed fleshing out, and the fight with Kingpin shouldn't have been won quite so easily with one final brawl.
If the director's cut fixes all that, then I'll be on my way to buy it shortly.

I don't know the DD comics or anything. So, I just judged DD based on the movie they showed. The dorky sidekick lawyer was annoying. The relationship between DD and Elektra was not very believable to me. Bullseye was a boring villian. The Kingpin didn't seem like as much of King as he was in the Spiderman cartoon series. He just seemed like a minor mob boss from the movie. Also having DD beat him up wasn't a very good move IMO. I mean this is his arch nemesis. The guy isn't supposed to win in the very first movie.

In Elektra I liked that there was some actual struggle. Elektra was not just unstoppable. They had to run from overwhelming power. The sidekick guy who got her jobs wasn't nearly as dorky. IIRC he died standing up to some assasins. That at least gave his character some redeeming qualities. The training of the young girl and having her and Elektra both helping each other get past some of their demons was helpful. The villians were more larger than life comicbook style villians. With larger than life fights. Although the fights were a little messed up given that these guys had the ability to move incredibly fast at some times and then didn't have those abilities other times. It worked well enough though. Not that it's on my all time favorites list. I'm not going out and buying the dvd or anything.

Yes the story is definitely fleshed out - there's a subplot that sees Nelson and Murdock (though its mainly Nelson) dealing with a case involving the murder of a prostitute, plus it all ties together in the end and provides a more satisfactory ending in that we learn why exactly the police are coming for Kingpin

As for the final brawl between DD and Kingpin, well its pretty much the same, except it (as well as other scenes in the movie) is more violent - it was cut to get a lower certificate in the cinema. Maybe this qualifies as being darker, maybe not.

Nevertheless, you should definitely check it out when you get the chance, it is a much more satisfying movie than the fairly straight-forward theatrical cut

Now having seen it, I agree completly. I actually like the film now. The director's cut isn't the rushed mess it used to be; it made sense.
Still didn't like Kingpin getting beat, but now that's just a minor peev.

Glad you liked it

Select to view spoiler:

I suppose the kingpin getting beaten at the end wasn't great, but I liked how it said that even though he would go to jail, it won't be long before he gets out.
So in a way, yes DD did win that fight, but it wouldn't be long before they clashed again in the future. The courts are corrupt and Kingpin will be back on the streets, but thats exactly why DD is there - to see justice get served, one way or another

Thanks Needy, your recommendation was a major factor in my viewing. If only Elektra was as good...
And your take on the ending is spot on.
