1 Wages Of Fear All I'll say is watch the original b/w version for an absolutely heart wrenching journey all about the human spirit!!

2 Cyrano De Bergerac Ok I know, I know I'm a soppy ol romantic but seriously this one gets me every time... Unrequited love at it's best.

3 Explorers This film got me into sci-fi in the first place and I love the 50's sci-fi references.They come back!!! Always wanted a sequel to this.

4 Empire Strikes Back Jesus NO!!! Darth is Lukes father!!!! Frankly still one of the best plot twists ever!! Didn't see it coming when I was a kid.

5 CASABLANCA....wait Victor Laslo!!!! Noooooooooooo

6 Edward Scissorhands She never went back to check up on him :( and he never came back down to see her!!!

7 Shawshank Redemption Crickey I didn't even know I had such deep emotions.

8 White Fang yes the version with Ethan Hawk. I think coz I spent a large part of my life with dogs I could understand the intensity of his love for his wolf, and frankly I'd have given up life in the city to go back and stay miles away from all human contact so as to remain with my best friend too. A cracking film of friendship that extends beyond the human confines.

9 Planet of the Apes "Get your filthy hands off me you dirty ape!!!!" Brilliant!

10 iRobot I really think this is a minor masterpiece and Sonny is a brilliant character, and when it's revealed he's the one on top of that hill overlooking the outmoded robots I swear the ol' heartstrings do get a tug or two. This film is slowly creeping up to being one of my favourites. It may not be long before it reaches the top ten.

Well there you go Chrisisall just for starters :D I'm sure more will come to me in time. But may I just make an honourable mention to our favourite:

No Way Out. It was only an average suspense thriller movie, but the ending so totally came out of left field, it blew me away.

MAL4PREZ

So I'm slow and only recently discovered Donnie Darko, but holy cow what a movie. The ending - that incredible song, and Donnie's mom, (Mary McDonnell of BG, btw) is so moving. Not that the ending explained anything for me the first time I watched it, but what a beautifully made scene anyway.

Please don't hate me, but I think I like this movie better than Serenity. But not better than Firefly, of course!

oh ya - and I totally agree about No Way Out. fabulous ending to a so-so movie.

I did see it yeah. It was interesting to see Ford play ambiguity. I prefered that to the good/bad black/white of "What lies Beneath" although that wasn't a bad flick.

I just got thinking about "Team America" and that speech the main puppet gives at the end :D Now that was a funny ending. Had me rolling around in fits :D

House of Flying Daggers- So sad. I cried like a little girl when I saw it. But so good at the same time, too.

Constantine - just the whole chain of events leading up to the ending. Blew me away. Biggest reason why I bought the movie.

I dunno how you guys feel about Simpsons, but what about a top 10 Simpsons episodes list? I've been dying to do one.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Now this is my type of thread!

First of all, carrying on the theme of "Movies with the most amazing endings":

1. The Sixth Sense - Absolutely jaw dropping and fantastic
2. Unbreakable - would have been better if I hadn't already read about that fact (not knowing that it was actaully an end twist)
3. Terminator 3 - I know a lot of fans are divided on this movie but I love it. I thought it was entertaining all through, but that ending really set it up on high. Gives me chills
4. I Robot - again, another movie I love to bits with a great ending
5. Spider-man 2 - Jump for joy! "Go get him tiger"
6. The Ring (Remake) - what an end to reveal that after all that, she wasn't supposed to help her. The moment with Samara coming out of the tv is the stuff of nightmares.
7. X-Men 2 - she will rise again
8. Saw - Great twist ending. Nuff said
9. The Matrix - Neo bouncing back and beating the crap out of Mr Smith without batting an eyelid... superb.
10. Signs - I love how it all comes together at the end and Joaquin Phoenix really gives that alien a good beating

And lastly, the Angel series finale. I know its not a movie but it had one hell of an ending

Notable mentions to:
The Shawshank Redemption (depressing movie at times, happy ending);
The Green Mile (depressing movie at times, downbeat ending);
The Butterfly Effect (pretty much depressing all through - though as much as the Directors cut ending flows better with the rest of the film, I prefer the more hopeful ending of the theatrical cut);
Donnie Darko (I'm not gonna claim to understand the movie completely, but it's very enjoyable, and I love the end);
and The Usual Suspects (only seen this once but will do again. Pity the twist ending didn't have much of an effect on me since I KNEW it had a twist and so was expecting it)

I'll think about The Simpsons top 10, though to be honest, there's so many to choose from, and I probably would end up cruelly missing out classics

Ok a few more.

1 THE THING Both versions have a great ending. From the 1952 version where the: "Watch the skies" speech must have really freaked out the kids of the time when going home after watching that film, to the 1981 remake; with just two protagonists left and "the Thing" being in one of them!! But which one (there is a clue ;))

2 Manon De Source Ok now I know many of you may not have seen this so I won't say too much, but let me say this: It's all in the acting! Watch Yves Montand's face in particular his eyes - pure genius!!!

3 Akira Birth of a new universe? Can it be any bigger, and more mind bending....?

4 The Incredible Shrinking Man Ok now this still blows my mind for it's profoundness! Infinitely small...

5 Crimes and Misdemeanours Brilliant film and a very sharp ending. A must see.

6 The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover I dare you to watch this just for it's ending.

7 Invasion of the Body Snatchers The original version. Masterful and nightmarish. Oh and there are two endings to this film. Here in the UK we had the one Don Siegel wanted ie, somewhat bleak.

8 Remains of the DayUnrequited love again. Never done so well until.....

9 Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Ang Lee again.

10 Angels with Dirty Faces I'm a big fan of Cagney and Bogart and this is one of Cagney's best. Superb lighting design too in this film.

This is gonna be tough, and I'll probably leave out some good ones, but here goes:

1. Bart Sells His Soul - I've mentioned on another thread that this is my fave ep, and I'm sticking by it. The whole dream soul world and Bart's quest to get his soul back is fantastic. Not to mention all the facts they use to point out that Bart has lost his soul. And finally, who can forget the beginning with "In the Garden of Eden" and Rev. Lovejoy's statement - "this sounds like rock and/or roll."

2. Homer the Great - Homer joins the legendary band of Stonecutters. I really like this ep, though I'm not always sure why. Of course, the "We Do" song is almost reason enough, and Patrick Stewart guest-voicing as Number One? Brilliant.

3. The Summer of 4 Foot 2 - This is one of my all-time faves for a few reasons. First one, this line that Lisa says, "Being myself didn't work, being someone else didn't work, maybe I'm just not meant to have friends." I have felt like this so many times throughout my life that I could really identify with her during the whole ep. Then, this ep contains one of my most fave lines ever: "Sweet merciful crap, my car!" Finally, there's the fight between Lisa and Bart in the kitchen, Bart using Milhouse's glasses as binoculars, and Homer calling Milhouse a poindexter. Overall classic episode.

4. Lisa on Ice - a great ep with a touching ending. Lisa and Bart remember all the good times they've had together as brother and sister and let the hockey game end in a tie. Brings a tear to my eye every time. There's lots of funny moments too: Homer chasing a kid through a locker room with a wet towel, Milhouse's teeth getting knocked out, the whole "if you get hit, it's your own fault", my sig line, and the lights being flicked on and off continually.

5. Bart the General - After continually getting beat up by Nelson, Bart finally gets back at him in a blaze of water balloons. Very satisfying moment. Numerous funny moments too, like Nelson's "you made me bleed my own blood", Grampa Simpson hitting Homer with a water balloon, and Bart's speech on wars at the end. Always been a personal fave of mine.

6. Dog of Death - After Santa's Little Helper has an operation which nearly breaks the Simpsons, they all get mad at him and he runs away to become one of Mr. Burns' hounds. I choose this one based entirely on the ending, when SLH is about to attack Bart and then he remembers all that Bart's done for him and becomes his dog again. The "I love you, boy" chokes me up every time.

7. Rosebud - Mr. Burns goes on a quest for his childhood teddy bear, Bobo. This one has many great moments. First of all, we see that Mr. Burns is somewhat human. Then, Homer gives up millions of dollars for his daughter's happiness. Maggie decides to give Bobo to Mr. Burns on her own because he clearly needs it more. And finally, the planet of the apes-like ending.

8. And Maggie Makes Three - the story of Maggie's birth and why there's no pictures of her in the baby album. I always like the Simpsons flashback eps, but this one's my fave. There's a lot of funny moments, like Homer demonstrating just how Marge got pregnant, Homer tearing out his hair each time he finds out Marge is pregnant, and his complete cluelessness over how Marge is pregnant. Finally, the end when we discover Homer put all the pictures of Maggie up at the power plant (do it for her) is very sweet.

9. Raging Abe Simpson and His Grumbling Grandson in the Curse of the Flying Hellfish - what a title. This ep shows that Abe's part of a group of soldiers where the last one alive stands to inherit a lot of money. It's all down to him and Burns, and he ends up bonding with Bart during the episode. I'm not even sure exactly why I like this one so much, I just do.

10. Cape Feare - This one gets the final nod because it's my fave Sideshow Bob ep. Sideshow Bob is attempting to kill Bart yet again, prompting the family to flee to Cape Feare. This one's full of classic jokes, including Sideshow Bob's stepping on a rake and getting generally injured, to Homer not having a clue about his new identity. All in all, a solidly funny ep.

Honorable mentions go to all the Halloween eps, Separate Vocations, Kamp Krusty, Homer the Heretic, Lemon of Troy, and many many others. Well, now I'm completely exhausted.

How you managed to do all that is beyond me. There are so many Episodes. Actually how many are there. I've only seen a few I know that.

I don't know what epsiode it was but they did an epsiode of spin-offs. And Chief Wigham and his son get there own show and it's set in Miami I think and done in the style of a buddy buddy film. Reaaaaal Funny. I love Chief Wigham!

I love lists. I make them all the time. Not useful get-things-done lists, but silly random no-use-at-all-other-than-to-entertain-my-brain lists. Yeah, those are great. So what list do I pose in this thread? Movies? TV shows? Albums? Breakfasts? VH1 specials? Fan films? Puppets?

I present the top ten, in no particular order, puppet/muppets according to twg:

1. Grover. I love Grover. He is just so unassuming. Thoughtful, helpful, friendly, tender. And he’s funny. A bit of a dork too, I like that. Super Grover. How many muppets/puppets are also super heroes? Yeah, that’s right, Grover rocks. Conversely, I hate Elmo.
2. Kermit. He is Jim Henson. I like all of Henson’s creations, don’t we all? But I think we all have a soft spot for Kermie.
3. Daniel, Lady Elaine, King Friday, X, basically the entire population of the Neighborhood of Make Believe. What was his name, the inventor guy…Corney. He was cool too.
4. Yoda.
5. Charlie McCarthy. Where would puppets be without Edgar Bergen? WC Fields and Charlie doin their thing. Oh! Mae West inviting him up to her room

I wonder what that would have looked liked…
6. Animal. He’s freakin’ Animal! No reason needed.
7. H.R. Pufnstuf. Who’s your friend when things get rough? All of the Krofft stuff was a bit trippy.
8. Beaker. Honeydew and Beaker made a great team, dangerous, but great.
9. Gonzo. He’s a weirdo…like me!
10. Tom Servo. Nothing against Crow, but I like men who dress as women and Tom was always in drag.

Props to Labyrinth, NeverEnding Story, Dark Crystal, Fraggle, Captain Kangaroo, Team America, Triumph, etc…There are sooo many memorable puppets out there.

Yeah, that ep was called - wait for it - "The Simpsons Spin-off Showcase." It was in the eighth season. I only did the top ten from the first 7 seasons, which I have on DVD. That's about the only way I could manage it. Still, my freaky ability to recall Simpsons episodes/quotes is legendary.

As for how many eps there is, it's still going like the bloody Energizer Bunny, but it's past 350 episodes, I know that for sure. However, it's definitely at the point where it should die. This last season has been nowhere near as clever and funny as the Simpsons used to be. Still, gotta give 'em props for still being able to come up with ideas.

The thing about the Simpsons (the first ten years only!) is that it had the ability to make one great joke the setup for another even better joke, probably the best thing you can do in comedy. Some shows become big just by doing it once a series; the Simpsons did it in episode after episode.

Examples:

Lisa: Dad, what's a Muppet?
Homer: Well, it's not quite a mop, it's not quite a puppet, but man...
[laughs hysterically]
Homer: So to answer your question, I don't know.

Shopkeeper: Take this object, but beware: it carries a terrible curse.
Homer: Oooh, that's bad.
Shopkeeper: But it comes with a free Frogurt.
Homer: That's good.
Shopkeeper: The Frogurt is also cursed.
Homer: That's bad.
Shopkeeper: But you get your choice of toppings.
Homer: That's good.
Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.
[Homer looks puzzled]

10. Bart the Daredevil

Homer falls down the gorge. Twice.

9. Bart the Murderer

A great episode, but the best gag is the last. Homer - "Oh, you know who the real crooks are? Those sleazy Hollywood producers!" followed swiftly by the producing credits.

8. I Married Marge

Who could not love a show that is a half hour of parents talking about how they brought up their kids only to be concluded with them joyously high-fiving when they learn Marge isn't pregnant?

7. Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song

Two words - "Teach Me"

6. Homer the Heretic

A strong episode with a great finale, plus an appearance from a five fingered God "The meaning of life is..."

5. And Maggie Makes Three

"Don't forget, you're here forever." "Do it for her."

4. Rosebud

Robo-Burns retrieves Bobo again, 100,000 years later. A great post-script.

3. Bart Gets Famous

After Bart's fame has died for his "I didn't do it" line, Lisa congratulates him:

A wonderfully sweet ending, with Bart and Lisa leaving their rival behind to happily skate together, perfectly undercut by Homer crying in his seat... "They're both losers. Losers!"

... although it's actually Maggie's first word that makes this number one. If your heart doesn't melt when she coos "Daddy", you should never have kids of your own. It's just perfect.

REGINAROADIE

I don't have ten, but there are five extended endings to movies that I absolutely loved and made me walk out of the theatre with a the biggest grin on my face.

AMERICAN BEAUTY- From when Angela says "I feel so stupid" to Lester's final monologue, an already great movie is pushed into the realm of pure art which makes you see the world in a different way. And that last line is so perfect. "You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry. you will someday."

BRAZIL- From that close-up shot of Sam as the hood is taken off of him and it's revealed that he's now in the torture chair to the reveal at the end that the whole escape/nightmare was exactly that, and that by going insane Sam was able to finally break free. Completely bleak, yet ultimately satisfying.

CLERKS- When they're on the floor of the convenience store and when Dante says "I'm not even supposed to be here today" for the unpteenth time, Randal just let's loose at him in a rant that oddly enough becomes the summation of an entire generation. Which is then followed with a very poignant closing up/male bonding moment where Randal wrangles out of the store.

GARDEN STATE- The last twenty minutes or so is some of the most amazingly spiritual things I've ever seen on film. From them yelling into "the infinite abyss" with Simon and Garfunkel's "The Only Living Boy in New York" to the tub scene ("Safe. Whenever I'm with you I feel so safe. Like I'm home.") to Andrew talking to his father to the final shot of Andrew and Sam kissing at the airport terminal. I defy you to be not emotionally moved by that.

THE TRUMAN SHOW- Truman's hit the wall at the end and is hovering in front of the exit door. Christof is giving his little sppech to try to convince Truman to stay. Truman is still silent. Christof finally says "Well say something, goddamn it. You're on television. You're live to the whole world." and you realize that the whole world is indeed watching. Truman then turns around and says

"In case if I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and good night."

He laughs, says "Yep.", takes a bow, turns around, and walks through the door into pitch black. And when the Phillip Glass music kicks in, you can't help but cheer alongside everyone else on screen.

I know these arn't sci-fi endings, but they are ones that really pull at the heartstrings as well as massage the brain.

Oh wow! 'Super Grover' used to crack me up as a kid watching Sesame Street! I loved the way when kids would come and sit next to him they'd give him that look as though he were really alive! I love that about the muppets!

Actually TWG you've reminded me of one of my favourite lines in a film :) D'you remember Dragnet with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks - and there in mid car chase across a beach and as they head into a soft toy stand Dan Aykroyd shouts out:

"Lookout Muppets!!"

I don't know why but that just gets me everytime. I find it so funny. It's making me laugh now... It's not a great film or anything but that line just has me in stitches :D

Nice list of Muppets too. I Love Kermit he's great, he's green. :D I dunno if Rizzo is classed as a muppet but he and Gonzo are a good double act. I love muppet movies. The only lure of becoming famous to my mind is that you may get asked to guest star in a Muppet movie. Then I'd know I'd made it big! I still get a kick outa seeing Mark Hamill guest star on the Muppet Show all those years ago....Michael Caine's best work after Italian Job was the Muppet Scrooged. Very funny :D

Oh well I could go on but I'd be hear all day TWG.

I'm off to find the lyrics for "It aint easy being Green" :D

Great endings list, Simonwho! Though personally I would have put Bart Sells His Soul on there. One of the reasons why it's my number one is the ending. I just love it when he's got his soul back and is peacefully sleeping with the cat and dog, and dreaming about the soul world again. Then he and his soul knock Martin and his soul into the lake and sail off into the sunset.

Ha! I totally hijacked this and turned it into a Simpsons thread!
