Just wanted to see if any other browncoats went out to see Silent Hill this past weekend.

I thought it was a pretty good flick. It's hard to qualify anything as a horror movie nowadays because people are so jaded with what goes on in the real world but this movie has a definite creepy factor.

What I liked about this film more than recent so called horror is that it doesn't simply overwhelm the viewer with non-stop gratuitous violence. That being said there are a few scenes with over the top gore. Think Hellraiser and up it a few notches.

The downside of the movie is it assumes the audience has some knowledge of the events taking place. For anyone who doesn't know there is a series of excellent games which the movie is based upon. The people I went with had some questions after which is a direct relection of them having no prior contact with this storyline.

And that's why I've read no good reviews of it. How can you expect anyone to enjoy a movie with a story that makes no sense, unless you've played the game. I'll bet $10 it's going to be a flop.

Don't get me wrong, like Serenity it will probably make more money from the DVDs. I might even rent or buy it if I read or hear more good things about it.

It does? Hmm, maybe it's just that in knowing the gist I hadn't noticed that... but then, I've no idea how close to the plot of any of the games the movie plot is, because I've only played about half of the first one.

But I definitely got all the SH-type stuff, and loved the music. It was well done overall, I think.

Except Sean Bean's accent. Not good, not good at all.

It actually pulled in 20 million, and was #1 at the box office, despite getting terrible reveiws. Deep sigh. These "The Ring" clones have got to stop. We get it, ghosts are scary. Especially when its a 12 year old girl who meows, or sounds like an old man (Grudge, Silent Hill).

Every weekend a new one comes out, and they usually do pretty good, due to the large ammount of 14 year olds (no offense) who go to the movies every weekend and just eat this crap up. Sorry, but its sad when these kind of movies suceed. Because instead of takeing chances on films like Serenity (for 50 million), movie studios just keep pumping these gems out for about half that, and make huge profits.

And even if this movie IS good, i wouldnt go see it because these movies comes out every week and i just cant keep track of which piece of crap smells the least horrible.

Although it's highly likely the first set of Silent Hill games pre-date The Ring, of course...

Explaining would, y'know, give it all away and run it. I reckon you should just go see it on it's own merits.

ya know, that's what amazes me with movie goers these days. If a good movie comes out, not unless it has a big name attached to the movie, it has a 50% chance to go far.

I just can't see hollywood making good movies when the same dribble comes out and the movie rakes in 3 times it's worth in one weekend.

I havn't seen ice age yet, but I didn't think it was that good to justify a sequel. How about scary movie 4? I just don't understand it and plan not to

Ice Age was Hi-larious but no more thread-jacking

all I meant was that since singate said that you have to nkow something about the games storyline I didn't want to be in the dark if I see it

I'm not sure if it makes any difference. It's not knowing the storyline that's the issue exactly, I think it's understanding the concepts: the two - well, three - worlds, for example. But not knowing the games just makes it weird and mysterious, surely, something not completely understood and strange. Which is good; means you have to think a little.

You shouldn't have any problems.

I didn't mean to insinuate that a person would be completely in the dark if they had not played the games. In fact, during the movie there is a great deal of explanation towards the end when the main character runs into the one causing all of the weirdness in town.

Telling you anything would be giving the story away but if you really want to know then head over to www.gamefaqs.com and look for the Silent Hill games. There are some rather extensive game synopses and detailed explanation of plots for the entire series. Enjoy!

I saw it today. I liked it a lot until the cult showed up. The way they set Rose up to meet the "demon" was just far too convenient for me, and while I could swallow "the truth" I thought it was a bit silly/cliche. Also, definately not as scary after that.

One of the things I liked about the original Silent Hill was the fact that nothing was EVER really explained. After I had played it and got all the alternate endings I still didn’t really have a clue why I was being besieged and those damn nurses. And the game was made all the more disturbing for it. I had a real problem with the later games giving to much away. What you don’t know is frightening.

And that’s a problem I had with this movie it explained things. But despite that I still found it very disturbing. And I cant honestly say that about many movies. There is a fundamental difference between frightening and disturbing, you average horror movie is trying to hurt the audience, but the really disturbing ones they are trying to seduce you with the grotesque. That’s what true revulsion is, to find something sexual in the horrific. Case in point the Alien from the original Alien movie. The Japanese are terribly good at this (although a bit to literally if you have ever seen Legend of the Over Fiend) and the Japanese influence carries very well here.

I think the reviews of the Movie have been very unfair, and leave it to good old Harry over at Ain’t It Cool to write one of the few I agree with.

Simple point, the plot was nonsensical and its resembles what has been done before and If I see another creepy little girl in a horror movie I might go insane but after I left the cinema my flesh was crawling something terrible. What more do you want from a horror movie? Plus Pyramid head and those nurses are messed up!

I'm going to be going out to see it tomorrow. I've heard some pretty mixed reviews, but it at least seemed like a couple people from the team responsible for the games had some input on it. (Plus, Uwe Boll is nowhere near this movie, thank god :)

I thought the Silent Hill games were just about the scariest thing I'd ever played. (Silent Hill 3 especially for me. I couldn't play that game if I was alone in the house :) I think alot of it had to do with the really oppressive and just downright creepy atmosphere you get through the whole series. (And how the strategy in the game was, instead of shooting all the monsters; creeping down dark filthy hallways with that little flashlight, and just running like mad whenever that ruttin' radio static started up :)

I didn't even see what was chasing me half the time, I just started hightailing it. If the movie captures any of that aspect, I'll come out happy.

I’m going to go off on a tangent here, but did anyone get the alternate ending in Silent Hill 2? That’s just plane twisted! You gotta love it.

Just saw it yesterday, and...

Actually, I think it was one of the scariest films I've seen in some time. Without giving away spoilers, the first big scare got me really good, and my date just about peed herself :P

Thing I liked about the games was the really, really oppressive sense of atmosphere it gave off. The movie really stuck with that rather well. The scariest stuff wasn't so much when they were running from the monsters, but while you were waiting for them to show up (which reminded me of the game.)

Some of the acting seemed a little stilted, but seemed like it was more due to some sometimes cheesey dialogue. (Again like the game.) But not enough to take away from the scary. There were seriously some scenes in there that I just really did not want to watch (even though I did, of course.) Which in a horror film I'll consider a good thing.

Some of the plot, and especially the ending, was a little confusing, but once again, that's true to the game. Didn't think any previous knowledge of the game would make much of a difference. (Though I kept scaring my date, 'cause I recognized all the monsters and kept going "Oh no... not those. :)

I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good scare. Special effects were really nice, and it's sort of a different horror movie than what I've seen lately. (Scary little girl thing being done to death notwithstanding.)
