Hey all,

I was hungry for Joss material, so even though I'm not a graphic novel fan, I borrowed Astonishing X-Men, vols 1 through 3, from the public library.

It's unbelievably fantastic.

Volume 3 ends on a total cliffhanger, though. Does anyone know if more Joss X-Men material is to come?

Also, is it worth going back and reading previous X-Men issues/episodes by other writers? Any that y'all would recommend?

Thanks heaps,

Indigo S.

The first three issues of his next Astonishing volume, Unstoppable, are already out, but it'll be some time before all six are collected together in a graphic novel.

I don't know about recommending other X-books though. I bought a few other GNs that coincide roughly with the Astonishing timeline, but to be honest they haven't been anywhere near as well-written :(

Joss's is the best in my opinion from what I've read, though granted that is probably pretty biased. I read Volumes 1 through 3 in Indigo last week and I was just blown away and I'm hoping to finish it on the weekend. If you're not a graphic novel fan then the other X:MEN comics probably aren't for you.

What is best in life?
To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you and to hear the lamentation of their women...

Really, the best X-stuff is the old skool X-Men from the early-to-mid eightees. You can find all those in the Essential X-Men books. The formation of the "new generation" team (led by Storm and including Nightcrawler, Colossus, Wolverine, etc), the assorted Phoenix sagas, the original Morlock stories, the introduction of Kitty Pryde, the Mutant Massacre, the Genosha stories, the creation of the New Mutants--all of that was great stuff.

Then it was pretty much downhill until Joss comes along.

Aside from Astonishing, the only current X-book I can really recommend is Peter David's X-Factor. It starts with the Madrox mini series, which leads into X-Factor. Excellent stuff.

I enjoyed the X-MEN. The problem I had with them is the stories of one series cross over into the others so you end up buying several comics to get a complete story. I wanted to stick with just a couple of the series that had my favorite characters, like Rogue and Wolverine.

So, yes, I recommend reading them. I think they are much more thought provoking than anything I've read in DC comics. They deal with serious issues and are well written. Just remember you may have to read more than one of the series to get the complete story. A lot of cross over.
