Released 11/27/2007- it's just the 1997 rip from the laserdisc all over again with the vibrating, pulsing picture. They ponied up money to give us an upgrade regarding the cover art and amaray case, and gave us the same crappy transfer. Oh well, it did come with a free ticket to I Am Legend, I guess that's something.

Shame on me Chrisisall

That's really sh***y.
I hate it when they do things like this. Why bother if they aren't going to upgrade the film itself.
Unless of course they are gauging interest and if it sells well enough in the cheaply made version then they'll bring out a remastered/superdooper/all bells and whistles version for a higher price and try to get you to buy it again.

You say they screwed you again. What were the others

Westworld and Logan's Run, both had MGM releases that Warner got their hands on and then they just released crappy laserdisc rips of. Now we also have a new Logan's Run that I won't be getting, 'cause it'll be just like Outland- a rehash of the old transfer... but at LEAST those two are watchable and anamorphic, lacking as they are. Outland, on the other hand, says it's 'enhanced for widescreen TV's (anamorphic)' on the case, but it's just a small rectangular picture surrounded by black on all sides when played on one because it's NOT EVEN anamorphic!!!!

I've made copies of Trancers and Trancers 2 (two not on DVD yet) from VHS to DVD that look better.

You'd think a major motion picture starring the great Sean Connery would get better treatment...

Edited to add: Ladyhawke is the other one I forgot

I returned it on the grounds that it said it was anamorphic on the cover, yet not so inside- technically, a cover defect- and replaced it with Soylent Green...took some talkin' though, the peeps at Bestbuy didn't know what ANAMORPHIC MEANS!!!!!!

Doesn't mean that it morphs into any movie you want to watch. So you never have to buy another DVD again.

That is a shame BIg 'C'. I know you were looking forward to a remastered version of Outland. Shame :(

Well Soylent Green will always come up trumps :D How about 'The Omega Man' did you like that one? If that has been remastered that may be a worthy purchase... I take it they've done that to 'Planet of the Apes' already and that you have that too

I had the Omega Man; I sold it. It was a fine transfer, it's just, honestly, it's not that great a movie- Ron Granier's (The Prisoner) music is what made it seem so good IMO. Probably the best movie version of the book is out soon, Will Smith's I Am Legend- I'm so excited to see it!!!!

And of course, the amazing Planet and Beneath (both EXCELLENT transfers) sit upon my shelf!

BTW, Soylent Green was a solid transfer.

Som, what films look great on DVD over there in region 2?

Across the pond Chrisisall

It is so strange Chrisisall. I just mentioned "Outland" on another thread talking about Western plots in science fiction films. It is supposed to be based on "High Noon". I actually liked Sean Connery in "Outland" better than the original.

I have to say it is strange to release a DVD without creating the best quality. How much can it cost these large production companies to remaster these films when they have all the equipment at there disposal. I call it being cheap.

Me too. Plus: Jerry Goldsmith's score was, as always, excellent!

Well I haven't yet set myself up with a 'whizz-bango-bells-n-whistles' system yet, as I'm hoping to be moving to Australia soon. So figured investing in heavy hardware premature at this stage.

However I am looking to pic up the Doug Mclure collection (not that it's released as such):
At the Earths Core
Warlords of Atlantis
Land that Time Forgot
People That Time Forgot.

Now I know they're not exactly Citizen Kane, but I have a soft spot for their naive adventurous approach and I always enjoy them when they're on TV. So I'm hoping they've done a worthwhile transfer. Lots of fond memories y'see.

Also looking for:

Journey To The Centre of The Earth
Robinson Crusoe on Mars (it's better than it sounds!!)
The Time Machine(1961 v)
When Worlds Collide
Dr Cyclops (Been looking for ages for this!)
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
The Quatermass trilogy
The Blob (Original and Remake)
Invaders From Mars (UK release)
It Came from Outer Space
20 000 leagues Under the Sea
Village of the Damned
Man with the X-ray Eyes

To name a few.

Jason and the Argonauts still remains one of the best. With a heap of great extras with Ray Harryhausen.
